They had been searching for well over half an hour and were actually contemplating notifying the police when they reached towards the wild animal section and they saw an old foreign couple looking curiously into the wild animal section from the gate that was closed, restricting entry. And one of them pointed in there again and talked to each other and they turned around as they heard the sound of the voices approaching them.
And when the foreigners saw the uniformed guards next to the panic striken Arnav and Khushi they waved frantically calling for their attention. Confused as to why they were calling them Arnav and Khushi walked towards them behind the guards. And then the foreigners signaled the guards to look inside with their hands without pausing to talk.
And as they all looked in they saw a small pink clad figure lying on the floor,
Khushi: Zaina!
The guards quickly opened the gate and Arnav and Khushi ran towards the child while the others followed.
And as soon as they reached Zaina Arnav and Khushi crouched beside her and Khushi frantically took Zaina in to her hands cradling her and started calling for her crying as she wasn't responding.
Quickly a guard knelt beside them and checked Zaina's pulse and turned to Arnav and Khushi: don't worry she is fine, just unconscious.
And Khushi continued to clutch Zaina to her and cry in relief while thanking devi mayya million times for keeping her safe. Arnav turned towards the foreign couple with a grateful smile and started thanking them.
The foreign lady: oh it is our pleasure, we were just about to leave, but I wanted to look at the wild animals, as we reached here the gate was closed. But we just looked in to have a look and then we saw ur little girl lying there and was just wondering whether to go and collect her ourselves or go and call the guards when u came.
Then Arnav turned to Khushi: Khushi
She was still crying hugging Zaina and Arnav quickly leaned towards her and hugged her sideways with Zaina between them, and as Khushi continued to cry Arnav quickly cupped her face: Khushi, pls don't cry, Zaina is completely fine, see? Pls darling it is not good for u to take so much stress right now. So just relax, everything is ok.
And then only the foreigners saw that Khushi was pregnant and the foreign lady knelt beside her and touched her arm, and Khushi was momentarily distracted and she looked at her.
Foreign lady: honey I can understand how it feels, we also had one scary experience like this about 20 years back when our son was about 3. But ur baby is fine and u need to calm down. hhmm?
Along with Arnav's arm around her and the lady's soothing tone Khushi calmed down somewhat and Arnav slowly took Zaina from her arms and stood up and Khushi held on to him and got up.
Soon Arnav held Zaina with her head lying on his shoulder and put an arm around Khushi and the guards guided them towards the zoo restaurant.
As they got to the now closed restaurant (it was closed to the public though the staff was still there) Arnav quickly laid down Zaina in a long seat with her head on his lap and Khushi took some water from the glass of water a waiter had quickly brought to them and sprinkled softly in to Zaina's face.
Zaina came around and she blinked as she couldn't make out where she was and scared, she started crying and Arnav quickly turned her around and hugged the little girl to him, holding her tightly and whispering in her ears,: shhh..Don't worry Zaina. It is ok..u r ok, see u r with us now. Nothing happened u. calm down sweety.
And Zaina just clutched Arnav's collar and wrapped her tiny arms around his neck and continued to cry while Khushi gently patted her head. And Arnav stood up with her in his arms and swayed her for a small while soothingly whispering to her knowing that the incident has really shaken the little girl. After some time he handed over Zaina to Khushi. And Khushi took her in her arms and again kissing her cheeks again n again reassuring both Zaina and herself that she was ok.
Khushi: sweety what happened when u walked there?
Cz she wanted to make sure nothing happened as for some reason Zaina was unconscious.
And it took a while for Zina's hiccups to reduce and then in between little sniffles Zaina told them how she went after the pretty little bird and then, about the scary sounds of the lions and how she was always scared of them when she saw them even on TV. And finally told about the huge scary lizard that got on to her shoulder and that she can't remember anything after that.
Khushi and Arnav sighed in relief when they realized that Zaina had fainted as she got scared of the lizard and not cz of anything serious.
Arnav turned and thanked the zoo guards profoundly as they left them and went back to their posts.
After a while the staff of the restaurant asked Arnav and Khushi whether they can take Zaina in to the kitchen to cheer her up a bit and they gratefully agreed. So a female waiter picked up Zaina and with a smile started chatting to Zaina and making her distracted from the scare she got.
After looking out at Zaina's retreating figure Arnav signed in relief and turned towards Khushi who looked pale and weak. And he quickly took two steps towards her and gathered her in his arms knowing how she was feeling and Khushi just clung to him while tears flowed from her eyes thinking of it all and the final relief of having found Zaina safe and sound.
Arnav: it is ok Khushi. Don't cry. Zaina is fine now
Khushi: it is all my fault Arnav, what happened to her. I should have been more responsible, should have paid her complete attention, shouldn't have been distracted like that. What would we have done if something had happened to her. Whom would we tell, thanks to devi mayya we got her safe and sound. But how can I be so so careless…
Khushi kept on blaming herself and,
Arnav: it is ok khushi, pls don't cry. And Khushi, don't blame urself, it was a mistake, I know a big one. But we'll never again make such a mistake again. I was equally responsible for her and I should have given just as much attention to her as u. but Khushi nothing happened right? So stop stressing urself out like this. It is not good for u or the baby..hmm..
Arnav continued keeping his hand on her tummy and softly stroking her there.
After a while Arnav parted Khushi from him and guided her to a chair beside the foreign couple who were waiting at a table. They both thanked them again and again as they couldn't finish expressing how grateful they were for finding Zaina.
Khushi: if u hadn't been there at that time, I don't know what would have happened. U saved our lives. How can we ever thank u enough.
Arnav nodded agreeing.
Foreign couple dismissed them saying it was just god's grace that they were there at the right time as luck would have it they had taken special permission to stay late after the zoo had closed and therefore was there at the right time. And soon they introduced themselves.
Foreigner: I'm Ben and this is my wife, Jennifer. We r from Australia
Arnav: I'm Arnav and this is my wife, Khushi
And they just got talking with Arnav asking how them about their visit to India and how it was turning out, while Khushi just leaned against him with her head on his shoulder listening to everyone talking as she really was exhausted with both the long day and the stress of the past 2 hours taking its toll on her.
Jennifer: ur daughter is really adorable
Arnav: oh she is not our daughter, she is my nani's, I mean my grandmother's cousin's granddaughter. We were taking her out for the day.
Ben: oh ok. So what is the little one's name?
Arnav: Zaina
And further talking told that the old couple was on vacation and,
Arnav: do how long will u stay in Delhi?
Ben: oh we'll be here for a while, we plan to fly back next month
Arnav: oh that is great,
And handing over his visiting card, Arnav continued: do contact me with this number if u want anything
Khushi added: and if possible come to our home if u have time. U would be most welcome there.
Ben: Ok arnav and Khushi it was good to meet u. We must be going now. It is getting quite late.
Arnav: can we give u a lift to ur destination?
Ben: oh no need. Our guide would be waiting for us.
Jennifer: Where is Zaina, we'll say good bye to her and go
And at that very minute Zaina enters the room with a bowl of chocolate ice cream in her hands and runs to them.
Arnav: oh here she is
Jennifer, dropping to her knees to to be face to face with Zaina: So sweety, how r u feeling now?
Zaina: I'm fine now!!
And she continued to dig in to the ice cream
Jennifer: Can we take a small family photo of the 3 of u?
Arnav: of course!
And Khushi took the bowl of ice cream from Zaina's hands and kept it on the table and Arnav picked her up and placed his arm around Khushi's waist pulling her to him.
Jennifer took the snap and said: u three look perfect together, cute little family! We'll email the snaps or might drop by if we get the time.
So they bid bye to Arnav and Khushi and left while Zaina resumed eating her ice cream. And once she finished they thanked the restaurant staff and started walking out of the zoo holding each of Zaina's hands between them.
It was close 7.00 when they started driving back home. Khushi was recuperating from the trauma slowly. And she was holding Zaina in her arms, who had fallen asleep the moment she got in to the vehicle.
After sometime Khushi looked at Arnav and slowly placed her hand on his, and he looked at her for a moment and smiled reassuringly at her.
Khushi: Arnav are u alright now?
Arnav: yes, are u?
Khushi:hmm..ya
Arnav: good. Now just lower the seat a bit and lie back for some time. Khushi take some rest cz u have been on ur feet all day long. We'll get back home in another hour or so.
Khushi: Arnav I'm feeling fine, don't worry. U know something?
Arnav: what?
Khushi kept her hand on his shoulder,: Arnav today u proved one thing for me.
Arnav: what Khushi?
Khushi: that how good a father u'll be to our baby. U handled the situation so well. U calmed down and conforted Zaina and me so well. You took care of Zaina. U have changed so much from the Arnav I met 2 years back. In the midst of all this, u proved again & again how good u can get when it comes to handling delicate people like me & Zaina.
Arnav: Khushi…
Khushi: no Arnav, today even I, lost all my hopes when we failed to find Zaina. But u never gave up, u were consistent u kept urself together and supported me too and became my strength. It is only cz of u we r going home in such a peaceful condition. U'll be the best father ever to our baby. Though I just don't know how good I'll be as a mother...
At that he looked at her for a second and he brushed her hair for a second with his left hand before keeping it back on the steering wheel,
Arnav: oh Khushi don't say that. U were great too. U took wonderful care of her all day long. Remember how u managed both of us and always kept her entertained, caring for her every need. Just see how she is clinging to u!
He pointed making both of them laugh seeing how Zaina was clinging to Khushi with both her hands around her neck and snuggling to her.
After a while,
Khushi: Arnav,
Arnav: hmm
Khushi: I'm hungry
At that Arnav couldn't help but chuckle knowing about how easily Khushi got hungry and realizing she probably kept her mouth shut for all this while and only said it now that she couldn't keep quiet anymore.
So he quickly stopped in front of a restaurant and said he'll pick something up and come back quickly. As Arnav was getting back and closing the door Zaina woke up and then had the snacks he had brought along with Khushi, yawning all along the way.
Khushi took turns to feed Zaina and Arnav while she was herself eating.
On the way Khushi asked Zaina to not tell anyone about what happened and explained to her that everyone would get worried if they knew, and Zaina agreed while munching on the chocolates Arnav had brought.
They pulled through the driveway in front of the home around 8.30 and by now the house was beautifully decorated and the fairy lights were twinkling all over the place.
The house was still filled with guests and Khushi and Arnav Knew the outing has really ended now. The three of them went straight down to the hall where the whole family was waiting. And Zaina's grandparents who were back by now were overjoyed to have her back as she ran to them and started jabbering about the fun she had. Arnav guided Khushi to a seat and sat beside her on the sofa, and watching Zaina they finally took a deep sigh as their responsibility ended thereafter.
After that they waited and talked with everyone and soon Arnav felt Khushi leaning more n more towards him and then trying to stifle a yawn. He quickly took the matter in to his hands and told di that they had a really long day and need to go have some rest pointedly looking at Khushi so nani and di would get the point and not ask them to stick around to deal with the guests. And he said 'we' as he knew Khushi would refuse until he also came up with her.
And Anjali quickly turned to look at Khushi and saw that she was looking exhausted and quite pale and was resting her head on chote's shoulder while trying not to let her eyes close.
She quickly assured them and asked them to go without specifically mentioning about her observations as she knew Khushi didn't like getting special treatments 'just cz she was pregnant' as she put it!
Arnav and Khushi quickly bid good night to everyone and Khushi hugged Zaina while Arnav ruffled her hair and they left everyone.
So Arnav helped Khushi up the stairs with an arm around her waist and as they got to their bedroom he locked the door behind them and asked Khushi to quickly have a wash and come to bed.
And soon after Khushi came to bed and even before Arnav went to the bathroom Khushi was out like a light. Arnav went and changed and he quietly got on to the bed and sat leaning against the headboard starring at the sleeping angel beside him. He softly brushed away a stray strand of hair that was troubling her and with a finger straightened out the small frown on her face cz of it. And he kept stroking her head while he took in his fill of her in this tranquil moment, and the whole wonderful day with its excitement flashed in his mind and he smiled thinking of the wonderful time they had.
And finally he looked out through the French windows out at the stars shining in the night sky thanking them for letting him have his own special angel in his life. She was a hurricane, his hurricane. And also his rainbow that filled his earlier colourless life and mundane existence with vibrant colours and brought happiness, the angel whose innocence and love brought out Arnav out of ASR.
And looking down at the small bump on her tummy his smile widened thinking of the most precious gift she will be giving him in a few months time. And he got on to his knees and placed a soft kiss on her tummy and then leaned over and kissed her on her brow.
And soon Khushi was snuggling to him in her sleep and he pulled the blanket up covering her and himself and slid down next to her with his arms around her waist and switched off the beside lamp and closed his eyes with a blissful sigh whispering 'I love u Khushi'.

After that they waited and talked with everyone and soon Arnav felt Khushi leaning more n more towards him and then trying to stifle a yawn. He quickly took the matter in to his hands and told di that they had a really long day and need to go have some rest pointedly looking at Khushi so nani and di would get the point and not ask them to stick around to deal with the guests. And he said 'we' as he knew Khushi would refuse until he also came up with her.
And Anjali quickly turned to look at Khushi and saw that she was looking exhausted and quite pale and was resting her head on chote's shoulder while trying not to let her eyes close.
She quickly assured them and asked them to go without specifically mentioning about her observations as she knew Khushi didn't like getting special treatments 'just cz she was pregnant' as she put it!
Arnav and Khushi quickly bid good night to everyone and Khushi hugged Zaina while Arnav ruffled her hair and they left everyone.
So Arnav helped Khushi up the stairs with an arm around her waist and as they got to their bedroom he locked the door behind them and asked Khushi to quickly have a wash and come to bed.
And soon after Khushi came to bed and even before Arnav went to the bathroom Khushi was out like a light. Arnav went and changed and he quietly got on to the bed and sat leaning against the headboard starring at the sleeping angel beside him. He softly brushed away a stray strand of hair that was troubling her and with a finger straightened out the small frown on her face cz of it. And he kept stroking her head while he took in his fill of her in this tranquil moment, and the whole wonderful day with its excitement flashed in his mind and he smiled thinking of the wonderful time they had.
And finally he looked out through the French windows out at the stars shining in the night sky thanking them for letting him have his own special angel in his life. She was a hurricane, his hurricane. And also his rainbow that filled his earlier colourless life and mundane existence with vibrant colours and brought happiness, the angel whose innocence and love brought out Arnav out of ASR.
And looking down at the small bump on her tummy his smile widened thinking of the most precious gift she will be giving him in a few months time. And he got on to his knees and placed a soft kiss on her tummy and then leaned over and kissed her on her brow.
And soon Khushi was snuggling to him in her sleep and he pulled the blanket up covering her and himself and slid down next to her with his arms around her waist and switched off the beside lamp and closed his eyes with a blissful sigh whispering 'I love u Khushi'.
