"Titaliya, get tea for damadji" Buaji said.
Arnav groaned in protest. They were killing him with love and over indulgence. Buaji served him tea constantly and Garima watched over him with eagle eye as he ate. Was the food spicy? Then why wasn't he eating? Ok if not spicy then is it not tasty? If not is there some other issue? Did he have some stomach problem? Did he want medicines? The barrage of questions never stopped.
And there stood Khushi, grinning from ear to ear, joining in the fun. But to give her credit, she had made sure the spice was just right for him. She made sure she always answered all the questions for him. But he was at his wits end.
He thought the day would never end. He had managed to escape to office. But when he came back there was no escaping the Gupta's hospitality.
He felt a pang seeing Sashi on the wheelchair. He could see Sashi loved Khushi immensely. He followed her with his eyes and his eyes lit up with each little antic of Khushi. Arnav realized that to Sashi, Khushi was nothing short of his own daughter.
"Titaliya give damadji that sugar free halwa I made. Give it in a big bowl," came Buaji's booming voice, shaking Arnav out of his reverie. Oh no! More food.
Arnav was about to escape to another room, when Khushi blocked his way,
"Yes Buaji. He is too thin. I want him to eat more ghee," she grinned gleefully as she fed him a spoon of halwa. Arnav gulped it. Buaji looked happy at this development and went from there leaving the love birds alone. She also wheeled away Bauji.
"Khushi cut this crap. I want to sleep now," he said sounding like a grouch.
"No I want you to sit outside, under the stars, and chat with me," Khushi insisted.
"In your dreams. Now I am going to sleep," he walked into the bedroom Buaji had allocated them. He looked at the bed in dismay.
Only one bed and nothing else? Not enough floor space even. Khushi and he had to spend the night on the same bed? Dear God. He needed all the resistance power in the world right now.
Well, he would jump into bed and pretend to be asleep. He would stick to his corner and she could stick to hers. He could put some pillows in between. To his utter dismay Buaji had only kept two pillows for each of them. Well! So be it.
Arnav closed his eyes, but sleep eluded him. And the blessed mosquitoes! They buzzed all around him though there was a mosquito repellent switched on. What had he gotten himself into?
In about an hour Khushi came into the room. He squinted to see her one last time before sleeping. But he couldn't close it easily again. Her hair was loose and she wore a pink night suit. She looked like an angel. To think he had to sleep next to her and resist her! This was so unfair!
Khushi crept into the bed. She was dismayed to see the bed. Big deal. She would stick to her side of the bed too. She looked at Arnav's face one last time before sleeping. He looked like a cute kid. Her hands involuntarily moved to touch his forehead to push the stray strand of hair. But she resisted'. She turned and tried to sleep.
Both lay awake on their side, determined not to enter the other's territory'.
Somewhere in the process of tossing and turning they edged towards each other in the night'.
The first stoke of dawn saw the most stubborn lovers in the world wrapped comfortably each other's arm, her head on his chest and his chin on her head'.
