Aquiline, I had a different explanation for the oil and made a post about it. Here it is.

1.Khushi had applied oil in Arnav's hair when he was sleeping and in her haste had dropped some on the floor:

Oil here refers to Shyam (the slippery slimeball). Khushi applying oil in Arnav's head could refer to the many hints Khushi had inadvertently dropped about Shyam. She had addressed Shyam by name when he had called her on the phone. Arnav was within earshot and did hear the name. The day she found out about Shyam, she was so disturbed when she bumped into Arnav that he soon realised it was something to do with her fiance. Later she looked all shifty when she was introduced to Shyam by the rest of the family and she rushed out, much to Arnav's shock. Arnav knew that her fiance was a PG in their house but then like in the scene where he was sleeping when Khushi had applied the oil, Arnav was unaware of the turmoil in Khushi's life when all these things were happening.

When Arnav wakes up and sees Khushi closely observing him, asking him if he needs anything, he hurriedly tries to escape her and in the process slips and falls because of the oil:

Although all the incidents related to Khushi's mysterious fiance seemed unconnected at that time, now that he knows about Shyam's obsession with Khushi and her supposed interest in him, he should have pondered more about what had transpired in the past but Arnav's brain shuts out when he is angry. His hurry to get away from Khushi and his subsequent fall is a reference to the terrace scene where he reacted in haste on the basis of what he saw in front of him and in the process hurt himself badly. The culprit was the oil a.k.a Shyam. Arnav fell hard on his a** seeing which Khushi is as much hurt as him much like this post marriage phase where both Arnav and Khushi are hurting while the oil (Shyam) which was responsible for it all is unaffected.

2. Coming to the photo frame scene, we are told that Anjali broke the frame but Arnav took the blame.

Arnav has been deeply affected by what happened to his sister on her wedding day that it had left his innocence shattered much like the photo frame. Notice that the crack is over the young Arnav and not on the young Anjali. Anjali coped with the difficult times by spinning an illusory world around her but Arnav had turned cynical and ruthless. Although Anjali was in a way responsible for how Arnav turned out, although she did not do it intentionally, he took responsibility for the way he has turned out, showing no sign of remorse. Take him or leave him. This is how he will be.

Hi Aquiline,
Better late than never I say. Loved your post, as usual a lot of pondering and hard work seems to have gone into it.
Only you could come up with the Traffic Lights in the Kitchen; Scrabbling Flirts; an the Oil and Water song...amazing. My fav has always been the Digging Deeper and you never disappoint me.
I just can't see the role Bubli, one so young. would play in the story of Khushi and Arnav, I hope I am pleasantly surprised.
Thank you once again for taking the time and effort to post these wonderful thoughts.

DIGGING DEEPER

Aquiline, have been waiting for your write up for the past two days. I am totally amazed on how you deciphered the anology of Liquids and Lies. Hats off to you. I love the way how you explain the meaning and their connection to ancient beliefs. 👏👏👏👏👏. YOu have great knowledge and love how you explain it to us in such simple meaningful language. Thanks for imparting your knowledge to us. Everytime I read your analysis I learn new things.
I would have never been able to pick on these pointers. thanks for all your beautiful insights.
LIQUIDS

Three liquids played a prominent role in the episode. Oil, Tea and Water. Let's decipher each in the context of the major characters we had:

WATER

I've already stated why Kushi is the water in an earlier post. I am not going to repeat it here but if you want to re-read it, try the link to it.

https://www.indiaforums.com/forum/iss-pyaar-ko-kya-naam-doon/2907398/fire-and-water-sleeping-together-pix

Adding to those points also, according to Volney Gay (a professor of psychiatry), "Water symbolizes transformation... Drinking water can symbolize internalizing these transformational moments."

In this scene we see Kushi handing over the medicine to Arnav and he takes it along with water...To cure himself (medicine) he definitely needs her love (water)...

OIL

Coming to Oil. Putting oil on one's head is usually referred to as anointing.

The origin of anointing was from a practice of shepherds. Lice and other insects would often get into the wool of sheep, and when they got near the sheep's head, they could burrow into the sheep's ears and kill the sheep. So, ancient shepherds poured oil on the sheep's head. This made the wool slippery, making it impossible for insects to get near the sheep's ears because they would just slide off. From this, anointing became symbolic of blessing, protection, and empowerment.

A person was anointed for a special purpose...to be a king, to be a prophet, to be an builder, etc. The oil itself does not have any power. It is only God that can anoint a person for a specific purpose. If we use oil, it is only a symbol of what God is doing.

Another meaning for the word anointed is "chosen one."

Now, we also know that oil and water, generally do not mix together. They just cannot be friends. While water often mixes with other liquids to form solutions, oil and water does not. Water molecules are strongly attracted to each other, this is the same for oil, because they are more attracted to their own molecules they just don't mix together. They separate and the oil floats above the water because it has a lower density.

However, there is a way to mix them. Detergent or dishwashing liquid can be added. Detergent is attracted to both oil and water because one end is hydrophilic (or 'water-loving') and sticks to water and the other end is hydrophobic and sticks to oil. When we add detergent to oil and water and shake the mixture, the liquids are held to each other by the detergent molecules and form an emulsion. An emulsion is a stable mixture of two or more liquids that would not normally mix.

Now, let's get to deciphering. Arnav is the Oil. Not because he had oil put on his head alone but because he rightly shares the properties of oil. When Kushi anointed him, she is unknowingly protecting him from the evils that are entering his ear through Shyam. Also, by the very fact that 'she' is anointing, she is choosing him to be the one who will act as the "king" or "builder". Now since Arnav is afraid of love and loving, he is lower in its density (but actually he is deeper in it). Kushi is too focused on her molecules and Arnav on his own molecules that they just do not give in to the other. So he always messes up with Kushi to end up being on the top and her below (not gutter position, mind; its just that 'he always wins and she loses' theory).

Now, detergent is attracted to both oil and water. Who is the detergent? Could be anyone...I don't know if Bubbly will be because for now, she is not attracted to either Arnav or Kushi. So who is attracted to them both? Almost everyone is attracted to Kushi. But who is attracted more strongly to Arnav ? Nani and Anjali; in which Anjali is more strongly attracted. So she might be the detergent that forms an emulsion.

There's a song on Oil and Water which I've quoted below. Maybe you will understand this more once you read it.

Beautiful analysis👏👏👏

TEA

First a look into the key properties of Tea.

Japanese believe that tea is a "most wonderful medicine" and "the secret of long life." Spiritually, according to them, it helps to purify the soul, boost endurance and build a string spirit. The great 20th century tea master Hounsai Soshitsu Sen, "In tea, we purify things we can see and seek catharsis in the process. This way, the sense that one is being healed returns..."

Come to the show now. Anjali is the Tea. She connected with Arnav and Kushi with her Tea dialogues. It was she who first told generally that Chotey is better now and he needs some tea. After a few TRAFFIC SIGNAL dialogues, we see Kushi remarking to her that she needs to get Arnav some tea. As soon as this dialogue is uttered, we find Anjali catching Arnav's attention and telling him that Kushi is coming with tea, thereby preparing the husband for his wife's entry to the poolside. The part where we saw Tea purifies vision: we know how Anajli cleared Arnav's thoughts towards Kushi and earlier Kushi's actions towards Arnav (which ended up in the Swami epoch). There may be much more to come but as always Anjali is vital to the love realization of the two.

Great analysis.

I have a question for you...what would Anjali be once the truth is out...would she still be the detergent or act like tea or like the broken glass. She might be all three. She probably would separate ARnav and Khushi, then bring them together once she realizes how much her Chotte loves Khushi and also when she connects the dots from the beginning when Khushi always told them about Shyam who was their PG and later on as her Fiance'. Both ARnav and Anjali knew that Khushi was not in love with her Fiance'and was not happy with her alliance. Arnav had also said to Anjali, Jab pyar nahi karti to kaise sari zindagi bithaigi uske saath. Arnav always had some inkling that Khushi liked him after the Diwali scene. I just hope he soon starts to put things together.

Thanks for making my day Aquiline, you are brilliant!!! 👏
The Dancing Dialogue was superb. I'm going to watch that episode again and go through the Traffic Light scene with your words in mind 😆 what a pick up! And loved the song, made for Arshi. The mirror scene was beautiful and it stands out for me because it reflects/reveals what Arnav really feels for Khushi but also forces him to really look at himself and his choices. I have a different take on the broken frame. I thinks it shows how attached both of them are to the past, how difficult it is for both to move forward.
Thanks for putting this up!!

Dear Lin.. I was here last evening itself and read it.. this is no doubt a beautiful analysis.. it makes me wonder though.. Especially the significance of tea and oil.. Water I understood in the other post and absolutely agree with..! What I wanna ask is yes.. they are maintaining the characteristics you mentioned but currently.. Is it significant only for the current track or will it hold its value in times to come? Do you mean this as a temporary symbolism or is it for ever that Arnav will be oil and oil and water wont mix..? The detergent will come in handy.. yes! But does that mean, as long as anjali is there, Arnav and Khushi will be together, and in her absence, things will fall apart again?

And if I am not wrong.. you mentioned Arnav as fire in some post, or maybe the same post where you explained water.. So does that mean the symbols change with the words or settings used in the episode?

As for the traffic light.. red, green and yellow.. along with the picture.. 🤣 .. I seriously dint notice that!! But in that picture that you have posted.. it made me laugh out loud!!! Does this signify something too? It sure got me thinking.. but then I only saw the conversation and no further analysis on it!! I also remembered that Yellow is Khushi's favorite color.. but the director's favorite color is green!! I wonder if you have noticed that!! We have had green in all of Khushi's Salwars before the wedding.. and its the most used color by all the cast members.. yellow to green.. many shades in between, used most often!!

I loved your take on the healer.. on who will replace the broken glass.. And Arnav's lie sounds more convincing to me!! It was only later that he realized the other motive too and hence the surprise..!

The songs is beautiful and so suits Arnav and Khushi..!! Loved it all!! Will keep you posted on my thoughts about the episodes daily.. but will wait for your posts too!

Just the questions I needed, Shweta!!...These questions are directed to not just the show but to my mind as well? Why do I see one person in different elements? Why do I say someone is fire once and later that he is oil?
A person has every element or humour in him. But among these elements or humours, only one dominates at a time...sometimes it dominates all though on'es life. In the same way, Arnav shows traits of oil and fire, but he is presona who culminates all these traits within and behaves accordingly. Symbols don't change with each episode...symbols are recreated and generated with each episode. We see a person in a different light but it is the same person. We learn more about the SAME person when he is set against a different symbol. Every person in the world is like that, we have in us traits of everything around us. But some traits are dominant and some are not. It is on this basis that i was able to see him as fire once and then later saw that he had traits of oil too. And for all this, Kushi remained a binding force. Water is set against Fire and Oil. But a time will come when the passion of the fire will heat the Water, and a time will come when Detergent is not needed...Oil will know how to mix with Water because this human Oil element will not hold onto his molecules and human element of Water will surrender her molecules to Oil as well...
Hope I've answered your query,Shweta. I want to thank you from the depth of my heart for questioning the 'foundation of my symbolisms'...and I am glad I was able to rethink the answer for you.

Wow Lin!!!! 👏 👏 I can see clearly now what you are saying!! Each element describing the various shades of a human being!! And our perception of a character when put against the symbols created and generated in the episode!! Yes.. you have explained it very well.. Thanks to you now I can understand other posts on symbolism too in a different light!! I told you before too.. I am not very good at symbolism and i get confused sometimes! As I say always.. you enlighten me!!
