If we compare Indian television to American or British shows, it's VERY different. All these American sitcoms have a lot of kissing scenes and it's normal. There's nothing wrong with it and it seems more real. But Indian television is still very conservative, I would say and more so, the actors and audience are still conservative so it is everyone's personal space. Sanaya and Barun clearly aren't comfortable with doing kiss scenes and their reasons are correct - personal space and audience.

It's a big deal when there are kiss scenes in Bollywood movies and even some Bollywood stars aren't comfortable and this is just television! So you can't expect them to be all bold. It's still India.

True but kissing is not actually that big a deal in bollywood anymore..Almost all movies have lip locks these days..Yes, the said movies are mainly meant for multiplexes though, not for big screens all over the country..I guess it all comes down to the outreach..TV has such a wide outreach, people from all spectrum of life are involved, hence the conservative approach..

As far as SaRun are concerned, its their personal choice and I respect it :)

Thanks for sharing the article dear.. ARHI don't need to kiss to create or show passion... They both have very expressive eyes and they make the best use of it.. 😆 😆 😆
But I do respect their personal wish..

I'm really surprised by the responses tbh. the actors don't seem to be very conservative in real life but this actually suggests otherwise.
in some ways its a great thing the dramas are far away from being like the sleaze prsented to us though bollywood's tripe. but don't alot of tv actors want to go into bollywood.
i'm froma fairly conservative family and it would be unacceptable for me and my family if i did a scenes where you have a strange guy pawing you. so on the other hand,,,,a kiss doesnt seem much more by comparison.

To each their own I guess. For me personally I'm not Indian so kissing on-screen isn't out of the ordinary if anything if there isn't a kissing scene in a one episode then that is different lol. That being said there is a reason why I love Indian tv serials because there isn't that forced lip-lock that always occurs in Americian tv shows etc, I love the fact that Indian tv sirals can express their love without having to actually show more than is needed because a lot of times I personally feel kiss scenes take away from the moment.

OMG its a kiss. If you sign on for a show that is supposed to show romance and you have issues with kissing, you are taking something away from the show. I do think Barun and Sanaya's "almost kiss" at Diwali was pretty sexy. But are we to believe that a peck on the lips will be vulgar? I understand married actors having issues with it, but then again, why did you sign on for a show with romantic undertones? Some onscreen couples are pretty tame, but others have so much onscreen passion. Is the audience to believe that these people don't even kiss? I'm not Indian, so my sentiments may be different, but I don't think its such a big deal. Kissing is the next logical step in a relationship after all.

I think kissing is a huge deal in India. I'm Indian and I grew up in America, I watch Indian shows (movies, serials) to appreciate the indian culture. If I wanted to see kissing I'd just flip on my tv or watch a western movie. For an actor/actress to refuse such scenes, is understandable. I mean we shouldn't have to see everything a married couple does to appreciate the romance that is present. If these actors can portray this without depicting such scenes, the more talented they are. Call me old-fashioned but I don't want to see it, I think for barun/sanaya's significant others it will be difficult to watch their loved one kissing another. These actors do an amazing job depicting their roles and do not go to the extent of kissing on screen to make us believe they are in love!

Talk of the Nation or Globe ..about the consummation of ram and piya...and asking the other actors did they watch it...as if it is an epic that missing it is a blunder...

THANK YOU!! for saying it like it is.

The leads are shown locked in a VERY sensual dance, caressing, touching each others bare parts of the body (arms, midriff, back, you name it) and their entire bodies are touching each other during the dance, it was a visual love making with clothes on. That we can swallow but a light peck on the lips if the script demands it, is seen as an anathema? Also, the leading lady is falling in the lap of the leading male, time and time again, he is holding her in most intimate ways, again their entire torsos touching each other, but a kiss would be an anathema.

What this double standards?

@bold red - EXACTLY my question.

I don't believe in gratuitous sex or kissing, but when a love story progresses to a point where a kiss makes sense, I say bring it on.

About Indian culture and how Indians perceive kiss. It is indian culture that saw Baday Achay Lagthay hain, is talking about it and articles are being written about it as a bold new step and coming of age of television. I will give Indian culture more credit than a mere kiss shaking its core. It is a culture that gave Kamasutra. enough said.

Mamiji - love your screen name 😆

I am an Indian who has lived a better part of my life in US. I have problem with doing everything but kissing. See the Teri Meri dance was quite sensuous and revealing. The spouses/significant others took that in their stride, didn't they? I think if you are in the industry, its a choice. I dont condone gratuitous sex scenes or kissing, but when a story reaches a point at which you show a married couple doing married couple things, then there is always a tasteful way of folding in consummation and kiss.

Actors personal choices are for them to make. But brushing it aside as if it a SIN - thats double standards.
