Honeypriya, thanks for your thoughtful response. I do agree that everyone is entitled to their opinion and the ability to be able to exchange widely differing PoVs is what keeps it interesting. Definitely no argument there. 😊

On the comment about this being a daily soap that does not intend to carry a social message, i've seen that elsewhere too. I'm not advocating that the channel or the producers start broadcasting social messages, although it would be great if they did 😊. But let's get real - this like any other enterprise is about profits. But there is a difference between a story that creates positive transformational change and one that stays away from reinforcing depictions of abuse. They don't have to shout from rooftops that abuse is bad, but they don't have to sanctify and reinforce it either. The latter is what I'm suggesting. Media and entertainment are powerful agents of change esp in a country like India. There is some responsibility to refrain from reinforcement of regressive and brutal behavior.

Thanks dear...sorry for the late reply...
And I totally believe in wat u say...Media is a powerful tool and the Indian audience is very impressionable...So it does become a responsibilty to not advocate any kind of abuse...it is regressive entertainment any day.
But I dont know if I'll make any sense with the point I am putting forward - but over the years of watching Indian television and seeing the society that follows this show...i have understood one thing...These are very subtle messages the makers try to deliver with drama...there are lots of examples, but I wont get into it.
But I'll try to take this SR scene and say- wat he did was unpardonable...but when they show the character facing guilt over it and trying to make up for it and rectify...somewhere it is going to make a difference...Its a subtle message...dont punish the innocent without getting the truth of the story.
Thats the best a fiction can do at present in Indian Telly...or else u have to be loud and OTT like sm other dramas on SP...thankfully thats not the case here...This was a standalone incident in the show...so I guess the audience rathere than dissecting it so much can see wats the outcome of it...the story has yet to develop isnt it ???

Fair enough, Honeypriya. I do take your point on the limitations of Indian TV - this is the competitive scenario the show operates in and has to succeed in, so perhaps it is hard to walk that tightrope between entertaining and NOT being socially irresponsible. Note: I'm not advocating that they try to change society for the better, although that is within the realms of possibility.

Here's where we do disagree and let me illustrate as you did with an example. Let's say on one his many attempts, Shyam succeeds in murdering Anjali. Over the course of the show, he realizes the error of his ways and is genuinely remorseful. Would we be so quick to accept his remorse and let him off the hook? Worse yet, what kind of msg would it send to the audience? it's ok to kill, if you can show remorse later?

You're probably thinking - "How can you can compare murder with this incident where a husband banishes his wife into the cold esp after he offers her a blanket?". My answer is quite easily. Yes, murder is the most extreme form of abuse, but this incident is also socially deviant. A husband who holds all the power who blackmails his wife into marriage and then he casts into the cold to possibly be exposed to physical harm (cold, chills, pneumonia; take your pick) is preying on someone who is vulnerable and has no free will or agency. There is no point at which she can say No Thanks! I'm out of here... To make matters worse, he shows NO remorse in the morning. His only concern is that his scheme is not exposed. Would this behavior not licence viewers to feel it's ok to prey upon a vulnerable spouse because one can redeem oneself later by showing remorse? This in my view is being socially irresponsible.

I am glad that we've had a chance to exchange views --- it is important to listen at least and try to understand even if we can't accept another's divergent PoV. So thanks for engaging with me on this.

Thanks dear...even thats wat I meant earlier too - people can surely disagree and have different POVs...butjust not demean each other and use derogatory words in shredding the characters - thats wat is bashing then...
I understand the logic fully which u gave and I am totally with it...any kind of abuse is the same at the end of the day...even a verbal one for that...but how I see is that neither the story makers are glorifying the act...they are showing that because of the misunderstanding he has been acting unduly with her and the girl is innocently sufefring at being no fault...But how I see it as is its just a part of story telling and slowly there will be justification to it...
It is fiction - there are loads of movies and shows - both Indian and abroad that show...but it is just story telling liberties - it doesnt mean they are encouraging or advocating that to be followed in real life. If the audience wants to see mature shows, they'll have to accept it...anyways thanks for reading me all along 😊

Perhaps, we're truly the end of this discussion... being civil and debating positions is all that comes of it, which I'll admit disappoints me...😔

-Verbal abuse is not the same as physical abuse... air, food, water, shelter are basic physiological needs to survive. By denying her one, he was compromising not only her emotional health but her physical health too. VERY different! All abuse is not the same, just as murder is different from a verbal insult.
-The creative team is legitimizing and allowing justification of physical harm. "slowly there will be justification to it" to quote you. Unless someone physically attacks you or puts you in physical danger how does one justify harming someone else's health? I'm horrified at the prospect that billions of viewers will do exactly this.
-Finally, it's creative licence, it's story telling, it's fiction, it's done else where in the world and in India... all of those seem to me like cop outs - not based on reason or logic or value systems or societal norms but simply on empirical evidence - others do it, so why not this show. People murder and get way with it, does that make it ok? Cop outs allow us to justify everything even murder!

Maybe east is east and west is west and never the 'twain shall meet. Thanks for the discussion.
