I guess they wanted to give it a sort of pseudo-cliffhanger feel. The editing seemed okay to me, for most of the part.

It means ending one part at an incomplete and high point in order to heighten excitement for the next one which continues the story (the ending of the second Pirates Of The Caribbean film, for example). I called it "pseudo", since it doesn't look like this track will be carried forward.
