Journey of self-discovery: Kanchi Kaul with her mother Hansa

Though she kept planning about it for years, when it happened it was on the spur of the moment.

All this while, Kanchi Kaul had never visited her mother's ancestral village in Karnataka.

"That's because everyone stays in Mumbai now," points out the telly actress.

"But there was always this desire to see the place. In fact, I had made up my mind that I would definitely visit it — and it finally happened. It was like I had taken a vow to go there."

Diverse culture

Kanchi's father Uttam Kaul is a Kashmiri while her mother Hansa Shetty is a Bunt. "My mother's sides come from a village called Sowkar, which is about two and-a-half hour's drive from Mangalore.

What was most interesting, was visiting the Nag temple that my great-great-grandfather had built — the reason for the vow that one day I will visit the sacred abode."

Destined to visit

Last Wednesday, Kanchi returned to her Lokhandwala home at 6 in the morning after shooting for her Sony show, Ek Ladki Anjaani Si through the night.

"I thought, as usual, I would sleep for most of the day. Just a few days earlier I had reminded my mother about the visit to Mangalore. I had hardly ozed off when my mother woke me up to say that she had just tried for tickets to Mangalore and they were available for the afternoon flight.

In two hours, I was out of the home and headed for the Santa Cruz airport. I couldn't believe that it was happening. It was as if it was preordained. I was on way to Mangalore all by myself. An aunt and uncle who were already there, accompanied me to Sowkar."

Remarkable journey

The actress describes her trip as a voyage of self-discovery. "It was raining heavily throughout. From Mangalore, we went by car to Sowkar. It is a very picturesque place and the rains only added to the beauty.

It is a small village and the biggest highpoint was visiting the Nag temple — that's what I always wanted to do all these years. I spent an entire day there. This journey also made me aware of my Bunt side and their customs."

Was this trip due to her new-found success with Ek Ladki? "I always wanted to go there due to purely personal reasons. It's just that I had made up my mind and I fulfilled it," says Kanchi who will now be seen in Ek Ladki with new entry Mohnish Behl.

"At present, most of my scenes are with him and I miss the rest of the cast (Shakti, Arzoo, Vishaal) with whom I have been shooting for months."
