Thanx 4 lovely update, w8ing for next part
This is the end, Friends! I learnt a lot of things while writing this and thank you very much for all your interest, support, encouragement and comments.
By the way, this episode is in Gopi's point of view as Aham's brain is soaked in hormones and everything I read there is too much information for me.
Jake - This final part is for you! I have worked hard to finish it before your hiatus.

For it was not into my ear you whispered, but into my heart. It was not my lips you kissed, but my soul.
Judy Garland
"I don't pretend to know what love is for everyone, but I can tell you what it is for me; love is knowing all about someone, and still wanting to be with them more than any other person, love is trusting them enough to tell them everything about yourself, including the things you might be ashamed of, love is feeling comfortable and safe with someone, but still getting weak knees when they walk into a room and smile at you." - Author Unknown
Part 20
Gopi was sorting their laundry and was very happy. A statement like this might be a simple, generic one about many others. For Gopi, happiness is a new feeling. She could not remember when she was so incandescently happy. She had been sad, afraid, terrified, complacent, shocked, tired, but never happy. All of this changed one Friday. That day, when Ahamji told her that he was falling in love with her, Gopi did not know what she was feeling. She was overwhelmed with the declaration and what followed and more than anything, she was afraid. She was afraid to be happy. She was afraid that all that love and togetherness was a dream and she will be rudely woken up any moment.
For the next few days, she was giddy and scared and wanted to cry and giggle all the time. Giggles! How Ahamji loves giggles? How his eyes crinkle with intention? How his mouth curves in a smirk? And his kisses? Oh Kanhaji! Gopi flustered and felt her cheeks burning, remembering all that happened in the last three months.
The morning after that Friday, she came down a bit later than her usual time. When Maaji asked her why she was late and if she was feeling ill, Gopi didnt notice Ahamji standing behind her on the stairs. She heard him say, "Mom! We decided to sleep in today a little longer as I dont have to go to office today.·Naniji smiled at them and said, "Come on Kokila! Why are you always after them? Let the kids have their fun."Gopi just wanted the floor to swallow her or at least to run away to the kitchen or if possible, to the next town. She looked up at Aham and was surprised to see him blush lightly. Maaji looked at them sharply and after few moments smiled at her and asked her to start the prayers. When they took the blessings after the prayer, both Maaji and Kakiji hugged her and wished her happiness. She could even see tears in their eyes.
After the prayer, Nani asked them all to gather in the drawing room and after teasing them for some time, declared that she is giving her sandook to Gopi. She said that though Gopi was a very good bahu, she was worried about her relationship with Aham. She had almost decided against her, but then, recently she could see that they had sorted out their problems and though they still are very silent adn reserved, they seem more happy and comfortable with each other. The sandook contained Kanhaji and Nani blessed that soon Gopi and Aham should present her with great grand children. Gopi felt Ahamji catching her hand and give a squeeze and she smiled shyly at him. Kanhaji! Thank you for making my dreams come true.
At breakfast table, when Kakaji asked about the Europe trip, Ahamji said, "Sorry Kaka! I didnt have much time discuss the trip with Gopi last night." Hearing Jigarji's snicker, Gopi thought, Kanhaji! When does one get used to this? If I keep blushing like this, Maniben might use me instead of tomatoes in sabji. Rashi Ben said, "Aham Jiju! What is the point in discussing with Gopi? You know that she is not educated and has no idea about these things, right?" Gopi was hurt. Why is Rashiben talking like this? Does she not realise it hurts me?" Maaji cried, "Rashi..." but Ahamji glared at Rashiben and said, "Its okay Rashi! It would have been better if your family had educated her. Anyway, I am more than educated for the two of us and we can somehow manage between us." Gopi was pleasantly shocked at Ahamji's open defense and when she looked at him in wonder, he winked. Gopi will never forget how her heart swelled with confidence and how she had to use all her control to not look up and smirk at Rashiben. That was the moment, Gopi now realised, when she felt more confident than she had ever felt in her entire life.
There had been so many changes in their lives after that. Though neither Ahamji nor she will ever be open and talkative like Jigarji, they have started expressing themselves more to each other. After that first time, they have never explicitly declared their love for each other. But, they are learning to be patient with themselves and with each other. Once in a while, either of them made mistakes and Ahamji got annoyed and angry and she became upset and silent. But they are learning to take these as a part of their life and to deal with them. Why? Ahamji tells me that the sealing the deal part is quite fun and he looks forward to that. I do too. Gopi no longer feared or hesitated while talking and Ahamji is now seen sporting a smile more often than a scowl. Though I like that scowl when it is in my defense. He never looks better than when he turns on the businessman act and every time I feel faint looking at him.
More than anything, she no longer walked around with the fear and tension coiling in her stomach that she might never belong there. She knew that she has made her place in the family and they all loved her as she loved them.
Gopi was brought out of these pleasant thoughts by Maniben's voice. Gopi saw the soup in her hands and said, "Maniben! I would have come down. You didnt have to bring it to me."
"No Bhabhi! Nani Bhabhi insisted that you should not strain too much for a few days now."
Gopi smiled shyly and said, "Thank you! Did you give Maaji, Kakiji and Papaji?"
"Gopi Vau! Why would we eat this soup? This is made specially for you. From now on, you should not worry about unnecessary stuff and take good care of yourself. Now, what are you doing?"
"Maaji! I am sorting through the clothes for washing. All Ahamji's clothes are mixed up."
"Yes! My Aham Dikra would hang everything in the cupboard and I had to always remember the suits he wears during the week."
I know! I do inhale his shirts for his cologne! Oh! that heady feeling! Oh Kanhaji! How he made me wear his t-shirt in Italy when he caught me inhaling the scent? Oh! Where is that t-shirt? I didnt see it after that trip! I should look for it. Should I wash it or should I leave it? Oh! I cant make up my mind.
She heard her cell phone ring and then realised that Maaji had been calling her. "Gopi Vau! What happened? Again day dreaming? Attend to your phone. It must be Aham!" She rolled her eyes and left the room.
Ahamji was on the phone. "Gopi! How do you feel now? Are you ok? Did you eat?"
She laughed and said, "Ji! Just now Maniben got me soup and Maaji instructed me to take rest. You dont worry Ahamji!"
"I know that Mom will take care of you. But I cant help worrying. Anyway, look in the bottom shelf of our cupboard. Left corner."
She found a bag from a saree shop and opened it. She saw a lovely double-shaded blue and green saree. "Ahamji! It is wonderful. Both of our favorite colors. But why did you buy it?"
"Gopi! I want you to wear it for the appointment today."
"Ahamji! I have many sarees. You keep buying me things. When did you buy it?"
"No! I didnt. I told the colors and a general idea and Mom got it for me. Are you upset that I didnt buy it personally?"
"No Ahamji! I know how uncomfortable you are while shopping! But why today?"
"Oh! Come on Gopi! We are seeing our baby for the first time. I want us to make a good impression. I am actually wearing my best suit."
Gopi could not control her laughter and said, "Ahamji! Everybody thinks that you are too solemn and mature for your age. Nobody will believe if I say you are so excited about this."
"Yes Gopiji! And everybody thinks that you are a silent and shy girl. Only I know how vocal and un-shy you are."
Gopi blushed and cried, "Ahamji!"
"Exactly Gopi! Hold that thought till we can do something about it. I have to go now and will see you at 2.30. Wear this saree and be ready."
With a smile, Gopi looked through the wardrobe for anything she missed. She then saw a bag in the back and opened it and blushed again. This bag had the special presents Ahamji got for her but which he claimed were actually for him. In all this sickness business, I had forgotten that he had put these in his wardrobe. I dont know how long I will fit in these clothes - should I even call them clothes? Will I ever fit in these? Or will I bloat up after the baby is born? No! I dont want to be fat. I am sure I can do some exercise and remain thin, though Ahamji says 'if you become fat, I will have more of you, Gopi!' He always tells the best things when least expected.
Ahamji showed the travel brochures and on computer about the different places in Europe. Finally, they decided to go to France, Switzerland and Italy on a two week trip. Gopi said that she had never seen sea or beach. So Ahamji included France in their trip. Then since Gopi had no passport, they had to wait for three weeks for her passport and their visas. How wonderful it was to sign my name in the passport and visa forms instead of the thumb impression? More than her, Papaji was so proud when she signed the forms that he presented her one of his vintage pens. All the elders insisted that Ahamji should take a few days off and go somewhere. Ahamji told her later, "Gopi! I thought that they would never ask. Sometimes our home is so crowded and you are always busy, I only see glimpses of you. I want to be selfish and have you only for me." He took her to Karwar beach which was close to Goa. Later she learnt from Papaji that it was the place where Gurudev Tagore* stayed and wrote some poems. He even read those poems for her. Ahamji had booked a private cottage with their own beach there and they could not keep their hands off each other. His hands! His lips! His teeth! His tongue! Oh my! The explorations, the fumbles, the frustrations and the fun they had! Every look, every touch and every feeling was new and they cherished every single experience. Then the Europe trip! They went into villages and town where they spoke no English. Ahamji, in his usual dry way, commented that in those places they both are equal as both have no clue of the language spoken. They had a competition of sorts as to who can communicate most effectively, which again Ahamji commented as the competition between his education and her people skills. To her surprise Ahamji was quite sportive and not at all the egoistic man he is known as. He treated the competition so seriously that he even tried to cheat once or twice. Always, every competition ended with a make-up session and sometimes Gopi felt that Ahamji was fighting just to make-up. Not that I have any complaints. One year back if anybody told me that I would visit such beautiful places with wonderful history I would have thought that they are making another cruel joke. Why? Six months back, even in my dreams I never thought I will be this happy! Even now, some nights, she wakes up scared that she is back at her Mama's house. Only clutching his hands or hugging him tightly gets her back to sleep. Many a times, he would wake up and wordlessly pull her into a hug and go back to sleep.
It was time for lunch and Gopi went down. Both Maaji and Kakiji fussed over her and even Rashiben enquired after her. Things were changing between her and Rashiben. After Ahamji's constant defense of her, Rashiben stopped annoying Gopi. It could also be because everybody could feel a shift in the relationship between Jigarji and Rashi. When they came back from Europe, something had definitely changed and they looked more content and happy. When Gopi mentioned this to Aham, he asked her to let them come to their happily ever after on their and not to interfere.
She changed into her new saree and came out. While everyone was admiring the saree, they heard Ahamji's car. Kakiji and Maaji were teasing her about Ahamji and they saw him come in with a grim face. Ahamji called her angrily, "Gopi! What is this? What did you send me for lunch?" and dumped his lunch pack in her hand. "Is this what you call as lunch?" Gopi was confused. What did I do? I had packed pulav and curry for him and which, I ate just now. It was fine. Did it go bad? But why is he suddenly so angry? Was he embarrassed in front of others?
Everybody else looked shocked. Maaji started, "Aham! ...". Ahamji stopped her and said, "Mom! Please dont support her. Ask her to open the lunch pack. You will know yourself. Gopi! Why are you waiting? Open!" Gopi was now really worried and tears sprang in her eyes. She said "Ahamji..." and saw that he had his face turned away from her. So she looked at Maaji. Maaji signed her not to worry and said, "Aham what is this? Is this the way to talk to your pregnant wife? That too when you have to go for the scanning?" "Mom! But ask her to open it. You will know why I am angry."
Gopi was now scared and delayed opening as much as possible. She heard Ahamji telling, "Gopi! Do it soon! I dont have all the time in the world." Gopi finally took a deep breath and opened it. She peered inside and made a sound which was both a sob and a laugh. She cried " Rasgullas with date sugar! Ahamji! You scared me! I was so worried that I would find something horrible and you bring me this.". "He smirked and asked her "I thought you liked these particular rasgullas. Why are you shouting at me?" Maaji asked, "What is this Gopi Vau?" "Maaji! I told Ahamji that I once ate rasgullahs made with date sugar and loved it. Do you remember Rashiben? Mama got that sweet long back? So Ahamji has got it now." Maaji's jaw dropped and said, "Who are you and what did you do my son?" Kakiji chucked and said, "Wah! Dikra! You are also learning to please your wife. Keep it up like this and you will go a long way." Ahamji then gave a box to her and Maaji and said, " I am bringing the picture of our baby today and when you all my baby for the first time, I want you do it with sweets. So got your favorite sweets too! Gopi! Shall we start now?" In the car, he laughed and said, "Gopi! You looked so cute when you saw inside the lunch pack. I have it here in my phone. And you look wonderful in this saree. Though I always find you wonderful, I think our baby will approve you today." Gopi laughed and said, "Ahamji! You too look very handsome and you will pass as a father today."
In the clinic, both of them were excited and anxious to see the scan and Ahamji almost snapped at the doctor to do the scan right away. Finally, the doctor put something on her stomach and they could hear the heart beat of the baby. Gopi felt Ahamji squeezing her hand tightly. The doctor explained that, everything sounded okay and then used another machine and showed a small TV like stuff. It all looked weird and then she saw. Her baby, her beautiful, tiny baby, moving around and kicking and even grabbed its feet. Gopi could not see clearly because of the tears and wiped them to see. She looked at Ahamji and saw the wonder and amazement in his face. She could even see a tear about to drop. The doctor said that, everything looks okay and she will give them a video and picture. She said that she will be back in another 10 min. As soon as she left, Ahamji hugged her tightly and did not utter a word. He released her and said "thank you" and hugged her again. He then held her hands and said, "Gopi! I love you! I thought that I know what is love. But now I see our baby and realise that what I feel now for you and our baby is what is love. Thank you Gopi for this gift of love and our baby." Gopi wanted to cry but also wanted to be strong for him. She just put her palm on Ahamji cheek and said "I love you too Ahamji! Thank you for showing me what is family and happiness!" and held him. Things might not always very well for them. But she was sure that together with her Ahamji and her family, they can face whatever life throws at them and come out stronger.
That is it! I feel relieved now. I havent edited this part much as I wanted to get it out. Please R&R as usual. I may not be replying to your posts right away but will surely do tonight.
