Ahhh...the angst of love that has not reached its logical culmination. Poor Lucy...expecting a child and losing her first love all at the same time. She probably also feels the guilt of coming in between her friends. George will likely come back in the future but what a turmoil in the present.

I feel for Margaret too. How awkward and painful to be stuck in such a circumstance.
