The next morning, Aham could not sleep longer and got up when he heard Gopi in the bathroom. She looked surprised when she came out and asked if she woke him up. He said that he could not sleep and wanted to go for a jog.
"Would you like some tea?"
"No Gopi! You just open the main door."
"Ahamji! I am sorry that I cried on you last night. Thank you very much for holding me and comforting me."
Aham said, "Anytime Gopi! To tell you the truth, I did enjoy hugging you and it would have been even better if you were not crying" and grinned at her. It is true. It was nice holding her.
He sighed inwardly!
Gopi blushed and could not look at his eyes for long. She looked down and said, "I am sorry too Ahamji for my mistakes and also for upsetting you."
Why is she sorry?
"What mistakes Gopi? Surely they are not as bad as mine."
"No Ahamji! After our engagement I promised you that I will meet your expectations and never did till recently. And I also deliberately made some mistakes so that Maaji and you will send me out. I should not have done those things."
"Gopi! forget it all and lets look forward to the future from now on! So! you go and do whatever that is you do so early in the morning and I will go for a jog."
Why does she have such low confidence? OK! I too did my part to make her feel this low. But, now it is going to change!
That morning, he was the first to eat breakfast as he wanted to start early. His Mom, Kaki, Gopi and Rashi were discussing at the table and Gopi started serving him. He eagerly ate a spoon of chutney and his reflexes made him spit it out.
Did Gopi make this? Really! It is more like salt chutney and not mint chutney.
Gopi looked scared and asked, "What happened? something wrong?"
I am very hungry and what do I get? This horrible chutney! But then she might have done it by mistake. Let me not fly off the handle this time and be patient.
After drinking a full glass of water Aham asked, "Gopi! did you by mistake replace the chutney dish with salt dish?"
His Mom asked, "Gopi! what is this? Did you put excess salt in chutney? Why cant you be careful?"
Then, Rashi started,"Gopi! just when Ahamji is giving you a chance why are you doing these mistakes? Then he will ..."
Oh! now I know. As such we have no privacy to get to know each other and now all these obstacles. Why God? Why? Can I not romance my wife in peace? What? Romance! Ok Aham! first things first. Let me solve the chutney issue now!
Aham stopped Rashi with a glare and said, "Mom! its okay! May be Gopi wants me to be always loyal to her! Gopi dont worry! I promise you my loyalty irrespective of the salt content. So, can you make some other side dish quickly for me? I was looking forward to the theples and I am very hungry too."
Gopi looked confused and took the chutney dish. "Yes Ahamji! I am sorry about the chutney. You please drink the tea! I will get it ready before you finish your tea!"
Aham had a brain wave and said,
"Aha! no way Gopi! I wont be the scape goat again! You better taste my tea first before I drink it. No! No! I am serious. Taste it!" and gave it to her. He saw the shock not only in Gopi's face but also on the other three.
Well done! I surprise myself! There is still some hope for me.
He took the cup back after she tasted it and winked at her. Gopi blushed and quickly turned to the kitchen. Aham looked at Rashi and smirked at her, raising a brow.
Wow! who would have thought that it will be fun flirting with Gopi? She does look very cute blushing!
He left with a smile for office after breakfast.
He had a busy day at work which was interrupted often by flashes of Gopi's blushing smiles and their conversations. When he went back, the Modi women were busy doing something or the other as usual. Aham could not spend much time with Gopi or others as he had brought back work to finish before his Mumbai trip. Gopi looked tired when she came to the room but she opened her books and started studying. After a few minutes, she was in deep thought, looking puzzled at the book. Aham was curious and had to ask what was troubling her. She showed a simple story written in English and she was translating the underlined words in Gujarathi. The line she was stuck was "Dont pull my legs!"
Aham asked why she was struggling.
"Ji! These two are talking over the phone but why she is telling 'dont pull my legs'? How can she do that over the phone? I cannot follow each and every word and Papa asked me to guess wherever I dont understand exactly. This I cannot guess at all!"
Aham laughed and started, "Oh! this is easy. It means ..." then realised why she was doing that lesson. He told her Gopi, "This is an idiom. So it does not literally mean pulling legs. In this context, this phrase has a different meaning."
"Idiom? What is it? Oh! can I guess? Is it something like the 'bolchal' we use? like 'daal mein kuch kaala'? So what does this mean here?"
Wow! She is not bad at all! And she is not the usual shy Gopi when she is studying. Mmmm! interesting!
"Yes! you are right! it means to fool somebody!"
"Oh! that is what it is! I now understand! I thought I misunderstood the previous sentences and was reading again and again. It is also quite late and could not ask Papa before morning. Thank you Ahamji! Thank you!". She gave a brilliant smile and started writing in her notebook.
Aham was mesmerised by her smile, the concentration and the happiness in her face. He could not take his eyes off her face. Oh God! She looks so beautiful when she is happy! Her eyes! her lips! the way they curve! the colour of her lips! Stupid Aham! accept it! you want to kiss her!
He found that he did not feel uncomfortable realising such feelings. He impulsively took her hands and asked, "Gopi! can I kiss you?"
Gopi looked up from her book absently and said, "Ofcourse Ahamji!" and then her eyes flew to him.
She withdrew her hands and stuttered and blushed and tried to say, "Ji! no! that is yes! I mean ... Oh! Kanhaji!..."
Aham was worried.
Is it too soon? Is she upset? Now I dont know! I have put both my feet in my mouth! Sometimes my mouth just develops a mind of its own! No! no! Can I not think of anything other than mouths? Is she uncomfortable? How do I make her comfortable? Best is to make light of it!
He said aloud, "Oh no Gopi! you cant take it back. And, by this 'of course Ahamji' you have given me permission to kiss you anytime in the future" and added in a lower voice, "anywhere too!".
Phew! it didnt come out very bad! Who would have thought flirting is so difficult?
Gopi blushed and flustered and started arranging her books with shaking hands. She was silent and did not look up at all.
Now she is definitely uncomfortable! Where on earth I am getting such thoughts? what did I think? Until yesterday I was horrible to her. One day - I got her an ice cream and I am already talking about kissing. Goodness! put like this, it does sound awful. She is obviously uncomfortable. I dont understand what I am doing. I need to take it slow.
Aham cleared his throat and said, "It is really late and you look tired. Go to sleep now! We can continue tomorrow." 'Oh no! that came out even worse.' "I meant - you can study tomorrow."
Gopi's expression changed from expectation to disappointment and she hesitated before telling "Ji! that is ... you said .."
When he saw her looks and her eyes making a pause at his lips, Aham felt smug.
Yessss!!! she wants it too! But then I lost a nice chance! Next time, I wont wait!'
He asked "What Gopi? you want something? No! Shall I put the lights off?." Oh God! She looks at me with those beautiful eyes! And that pout! Who am I kidding? I cant wait at all!
He bent and pressed a quick kiss on her cheek, very close to her mouth.
It is confirmed! I am a fool! An angry, arrogant fool! Why did I not notice it till now? She is intoxicating! How could I resist her? And what am I going to do now? Lord! give me strength to wait for Gopi to be comfortable!
He looked at Gopi and there was a jumble of emotions he could not read. But she looked beautiful - maddeningly so. He caressed her cheeks with his knuckles and said, "Good night Gopi!"
That night Aham slept with a smile though he had to use a lot of his self-control to not kiss her again.
