After playing the cool dude Adhiraj in STAR One's Miley Jab Hum Tum, Nishant Malkani is enjoying playing a diagonally opposite character of a shy guy Anukalp in Zee TV's Ram Milaaye Jodi. Tall, fair and handsome, Nishant might have just started his acting career but with three serials under his belt, he comes across as an experienced professional. The actor talks about Sara replacing Priyal in the show, his off and on screen camaraderie with her and his rule for life.

Too much has happened in your show Ram Milaye Jodi on Zee- on and off screen. How has the experience been working in the serial?
Ram Milaye Jodi has been on air since five months and I feel I have understood the character of Anukalp pretty well. My reactions to scene and situations come more naturally than in a thought out manner. I am able to behave like Anukalp and I feel very much like a Gujarati boy. My chemistry with all my co stars is growing steadily and we are all working in tandem. Overall, it is fun and an enjoyable experience.

How did you react when Priyal was replaced by Sara Khan as the lead of the show?
I had mixed reactions. Priyal had been working with the whole team including me for over three months and to suddenly hear that she won't be part of the show, was bit sad. But one also realizes that decisions are taken for the betterment of the show and the channel. The show must go on and the show comes first.
Are you in touch with Priyal now?
Yes. We became good friends and keep in touch. We talk often about general stuff, her life, work etc.

How is it working with Sara? Was it easy to adjust or tough?
She is a professional person and gradually getting the hang of her character and understanding Mona better everyday. It is easy with her on the sets as she is a chilled out person. She is obviously new among us but it has been cool.

Are you cordial or friendly with her?
We are pretty cordial. We share jokes and have good chemistry on and off set. It is effortless to work with her as, like I said, she is a chilled out person. It is fun and a pleasure to have someone as hardworking as her.

What kind of response did you get from fans regarding Priyal being replaced with Sara and your pairing with her now?
Initially, most of the fans weren't happy as they had accepted Priyal and me as Mona and Anukalp, so it took them a while to adjust to Sara. That was only natural. But gradually they have accepted Sara and me inthe roles. People are enjoying Sara in Mona's role now which bodes well for our show.

What do you find likable and irritating about your role Anukalp?
Anukalp has very strong feelings but he is unable to express himself. He loves Mona a lot but has a tough time conveying that. He is extremely shy, inexperienced about relationships and dealing with women- so he has no clue about handling his mom and his wife. He loves both of them and is sort of stuck in the middle trying to balance both. I wouldn't want to change anything about him as he is lovable, down to earth, responsible, family oriented guy.

What does Anukalp like and dislike about Mona?
Mona's bindaas attitude is a major attraction for Anukalp. She does what her heart says, a quality he admires. But he also feels that at times she should think before doing things too. Like recently she had to cook but as she doesn't know how to, she got food from her mom's place. As they are Punjabis and eat non veg, though the food was veg, it was a total no-no for the Gujaratis. In her innocence, she goofed up.

You have done the fun dude role Adhiraj and now are playing the simple shy guy Anukalp. Which role is the closest to the real Nishant?
It is pretty fun doing both. While Adhiraj could do anything- romance a girl in front of an audience, propose to her and even sing, Anukalp hesitates to hold his wife's hand behind closed doors in his bedroom!! Both the roles have their charm. I relate to both of them personally. There have been times when I have done things impulsively like Adhiraj and there have been instances when I have thought a lot and been shy about certain things like Anukalp.

What is your mantra in life?
Live in the moment but plan for the future.
