Love her or envy her, you can't deny she's one stand-out lady. Dignified and statuesque, 'beautiful', is just one of many adjectives that describe Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
When she entered Bollywood 11 years ago, it was with a passion to "carve her own niche." It is a promise she has kept.
Ambika Anand caught up with the 'otherworldly' beauty…
Ambika: How is it being Aishwarya Rai, I mean you are so beautiful! Everybody tells us you wake up beautiful…so many women and men look up to you. How is it just being you?
Aishwarya: I think everyone is really generous and sweet with all the compliments and positive opinions. But what I have really been is myself. I have never tried to construct a persona or personality or an image.
It's really about being yourself and that's how I think you survive the test of time and all the different roles or journeys of life.
There have been so many dimensions, and such an incredible pace to the variety of experiences I have had through the time you guys have known me and since I have been in the public eye. But through it all what I have maintained is holding on to myself and that hasn't been tough.
I have a connect with my audiences and well wishers probably because I am just who I am.
Ambika: When you were 20, did you actually think you would become such a huge superstar?
Aishwarya: Now that's a trick question! The thing is, I choose to give my best to what I'm doing. I don't know if the word is determined but I was passionate about carving my niche. And probably the kind of student I always was, it's not about being the shining star it is about doing your best. That was something I was passionate about.
I live from one minute to the next or from day to day. A day really has plenty happening!
I have never looked at life that far ahead even though in every interview, from the beginning, I'd be asked 10 years from now what do you think? I would be like, wow that looks like a long time ahead.
I'm very thankful to my industry and all the professionals I worked with who gave me so many incredible opportunities so early from the start. I don't think I was ever treated as a newcomer. And I was given very good work from the beginning and my audience embraced that.
Ambika: So do you think it's luck?
Aishwarya: It is hard work. The luck, I had was work came to me. So that was my good fortune because right from the first photo shoot, everybody suddenly already knew me. So it was wonderful the kind of response I got.
But from there on, like I have always said, the opportunities have always come my way. I haven't had to go out looking for work doing auditions that most people have to do when they are looking for a job in show biz.
But with every assignment, it has been really hard work because circumstances would be challenging or something or the other. I would always say that God hasn't taken out the uphill climb or the hard work from my life, which is a good thing. It is a great balance.
Ambika: Fashionably speaking, which is your favourite drape?
Aishwarya: The conventional drape – the sari, is obviously a favourite choice. It does magic with the Indian silhouette and today the West is discovering it. It's so sensuous, beautiful and super elegant.
I have always been partial to it. The beauty of the sari is that you can drape it in so many different ways.
Infact, if you go back to my modelling days, I remember the little black dress was the only thing that everybody would resort to. But I would be wearing the sari though I was just 19 or 20.
People would be like, she's just out of her teens… why would she wear something so mature as a sari! But gradually, I saw, many people from the modelling world and films, make the same choice of the sari.
Ambika: Now we have so many saris in India. Which is your favourite?
Aishwarya: As I started wearing the sari so early, I gave it a western twist that is today so fashionable, with all your sparkles and play with embroidery, lace and net.
But honestly, I love the traditional weaves and want to bring it back very strongly as I think we have so much to offer and it's so unique and special being an Indian. And the variety we have within our culture…
So at public functions, I do the whole shebang and you have the variety go in but personally, I'm partial to traditional weaves.
Ambika: Aishwarya, we now have a rapid fire for you…
Aishwarya: Okay, I'll try.
Ambika: Fashion for Aishwarya Rai is?
Aishwarya: Being yourself. You have to not lose yourself to fashion, you can create it. I think it's like art. You enjoy it, you are comfortable in it and of course you have fun with it!
Ambika: How many shoes does Aishwarya Rai possess?
Aishwarya: I haven't counted.
Ambika: Over 100, over 200?
Aishwarya: I haven't counted. Don't make me sound like I just have a wardrobe with shoes falling out! I think, I walk in my own shoes, if that makes any sense!
Ambika: Diamonds or Pearls?
Aishwarya: Trick question because I think both are a part of my life. One is solid and multi-faceted, which is me. And the pearl is cool and serene. So both.
Ambika: Your favourite style icon?
Aishwarya: I really am not into these 'favourite questions'. There are many names and then you can bring it closer home, today I'd say my father-in-law – Amitabh Bachchan.
Ambika: When in doubt wear?
Aishwarya: Wear what you feel confident and comfortable in.
Ambika: What would you wear if you had two minutes to pick something and rush on a date with Abhishek?
Aishwarya: With Abhishek, I'm really chilled out. We are easy!
I think it's what you are comfortable in. For me, comfort is the keyword. You don't have to work at impressing people because then you lose yourself. You need to be comfortable because then you carry the whole evening in any event.
Ambika: Five things we will find in Aishwarya Rai's bag?
Aishwarya: It's never five things. There is a reason we carry big bags!
Ambika: So tell me all the things in it!
Aishwarya: I think I carry my home in my bag! That's what Abhishek teases me about. He calls it the Mary Poppins bag, everything comes out of it!
Whatever you need is in there. I have everything that I could possibly need because I'm always on the go. So its not five, its plenty!
Ambika: Some say intellect is overrated, some say seriousness is overrated. What do you think is overrated in life?
Aishwarya: I think opinions are overrated!
