Jatin's re-entry leaves Kumkum in tight spot

Sumeet (Hussain), Kumkum (Juhi Parmar) and Jatin (Anuj Saxena) in Kumkum — Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan Though rising from the dead is commonplace in television, this coming back-to-life has made the soap tread a slippery path. BAG Films' afternoon show, Kumkum — Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan, on Star Plus, brought back the character of Jatin (Anuj Saxena) in November. Initially, producer Anuradha Prasad introduced him as Jatin's lookalike, Karan, and later it was revealed that he was Jatin! Lifted from classic The aim was to play on Kumkum's dilemma — to choose between present husband Sumeet (Hussain) and her past — Jatin. However, this triangle did not seem to have gelled with the audience. It is now learnt that Jatin will undergo a slight metamorphosis, resurfacing as a paan-chewing tapori called Manikbhai. This kahaani mein twist, inspired by the Hindi potboiler Kasme Vaade, is a case of mistaken identities. Admits Shailja Kejriwal, Star's creative head, "Yes, the re-entry of Jatin did not seem to go down too well. But in a daily soap, there are twists and turns. Jatin's track did not work, so we are ending it. We are developing a new one; of a different person, yet the surprise element of a daily soap continues." Viewers may recall that Jatin, Sumeet's brother, featured in Kumkum when the saga began over three years ago. He was present for about 40 episodes till his death, after which his wife Kumkum tied the knot with Sumeet. So why was Jatin brought back in? Says Sancheeta Bose, creative head, Kumkum, "Jatin's entry in the show was to push the story ahead. The main protagonists are of course Sumeet and Kumkum, and viewers want to see them. To provide a jolt, Jatin was brought into the scene, to play on Kumkum being torn between two men." Earlier this month, the show also witnessed a change of director and writer to rejuvenate the track. shaheen@mid-day.com
