I think we can see reality show singer success/failure with the best practical example.
Shreya G came out of them, and that too as a child singer - something that was exceptional then. But what happened then? I believe that her prize was to go away and get even better lessons for a few years: not money or recording contracts or shows.
In western classical music the voice is called the best and the most delicate instrument and there are many many things that can spoil it, even if you started out great.
Students are often told to wait for their voices to mature before taking on full opera/voice degrees and they do it slowly, by degrees.
I believe that is why people like Lata, Asha or Rafi etc had such great success over such a long time. They knew that their greatest "luck" was their voice and they made sure it only got better and learnt to do more things with it.
Singing is hard work first and foremost, but with all these costumes and get-ups and dramas, I do not think they have much time to actually go and practise their stuff.
That is why I am crossing my fingers that Anwesha or Aishwarya, for instance get out of this reality show business and start concentrating on their training. Songs will come in the end like they did to Shreya.
Anwesha was such perfection in CU, I hope she concentrates on her ability to get every single little detail just right, as she did then.
Even on that Millenium singing talent show with A R Rahman I was ashamed to see that the 8 singers, all current professionals- playback singers, sang so badly live. They were often off-key, out of tune, or simply fell flat, esp when rendering older songs. Mohit was one of them, but others were no better.
dude this forum has some real die hard anwesha supporters 😆
No shortcut to success - totally agree with Kailash Kher that even before becoming something these reality show contestants are hyped as success, winners etc so much and all these fan clubs, fan mails etc...they make them take things for granted...by the time they realise what was the whole fuss about, they loose their virtue which won them accolades or atleast struggle hard to achieve quality back and by that time there is another set of reality show contestants ready to take them over.....it was a noble intention to start with, but more channels, more 'marketing' and 'business' into it, it is all left as not more than a channel race for trps. Singing is all burried and forgotten somewhere...
But the hope hasnt died yet...we do have singers who concentrate on singing, but oflate even in classical field there is so much politics that its hard to believe.
