He collapsed on the seat and stared out the window. How drastically his life changed in the last few days? He still couldn't believe she was gone from his life. Just three days ago they were together and now she was gone.
Nothing is the same as before
I can't move on
Don't wanna try
All the moments they spent together flashed in front of him and he was clinging to the fact that she would have been there all the time. He didn't realize he honestly had her there as back up support system. He forgot to understand that she had a life as well, and feelings that he sometimes didn't understand and possibly never could.
All the joy that I ever knew
Was taken away
Kissed slowly good-bye
He could see the ground below him fading away and he never knew how easily he could relate that to real life. Till now. Till she left him.
He had always felt that she was the one girl who would never leave. The one girl who would stick with him through everything.
Now this mirage was broken and his heart was shattered.
Something he realized as he watched the clouds was that he wasn't shattered for himself. He knew he'd be able to take care of himself but it was her.
Her he was concerned for. He had known her for far too long to know everything she was possibly going through at this moment. Even though he knew she was always there looking over him; there was no one there for her.
That realization broke his heart.
Tell me who be watching over you
When I feel you smiling down on me
Never knew life could ever be so cruel
I'm living off of memories of you
Now that he was on his way to find her again he couldn't think of what he could say to her. She never got upset with him before but now he knew. She was always holding in her anger and now—now it had burst and too quickly to even give him a chance to fix it.
She had gone back home to Mumbai leaving him alone in London and finding out through her cousin/best friend Rubina had killed Prem the most. He had called her cell phone only to have Rinki pick up.
"What do you want Prem?"'
"Rinki? Why are you answering her phone?"
"She's gone Prem. Okay? You've pushed her too far this time."
"I..what?" Prem stammered. "What do you mean?"
"She went back. Back to Mumbai for good."
The phone clicked on the other end and Prem knew Rinki had hung up without giving him a chance to ask what happened and now here he was.
In a plane off to get his love back; his life in other words. He finally understand what she meant to him know that he had managed to lose her.
Even though you're gone
I won't let you fade away
Never fade away
Never fade away
The plane was finally decelerating and getting closer to the ground and Prem couldn't believe how fast the time had gone. He had imagined that without her in his life he'd feel every moment dragging but now he felt relieved that this 7 hour plane ride had seemed so short.
He had thought of thousands of things to tell her when he found her he just hoped that would be enough to get her back in his life.
Never had these days be this cold
This sky be this grey
Since he took you away
The plane landed with a thump as the wheels collided with the runway screeching to a halt. Prem couldn't even feel anything in his heart. Even if the plane had crashed at that precise moment he felt he had no reason to want to live in this world anymore.
The plane continued taxi-ing on the runway and Prem took out his phone, pleased to see it had network almost immediately.
I can't find the reason to breathe
No reason to smile
Girl I need you around
"Hello?" Rinki's voice greeted him.
"Rubina, it's me. Please don't hang up. I need something from you."
"What Prem?" Rinki sighed on the other end.
The plane halted to a stop and an announcement went on air. "All passengers are now permitted to stand up and take out their hand luggage. We hope you had an enjoyable flight with Jet Airways. Welcome to Mumbai, India."
"You're in Mumbai?" The surprise was evident in her voice.
"I am—that's part of what I need from you." Prem started.
"3B Giriraj Apartments, Altamount Road, South Mumbai," Rinki said quickly.
"Wha?"
"Her address,"
Prem stepped out of the plane and into the airport with a bright smile on his face. "Thank you,"
"You're welcome Prem. Just bring her back okay?"
"I'll do my best," Prem told her before hanging up. "Thanks again."
"Don't mention it," Rinki slid her phone shut and sighed closing her eyes. She hoped everything worked out.
Tell me who be watching over you
When I feel you smiling down on me
Never knew life could ever be so cruel
I'm living off of memories of you
Prem took his laptop bag and swung it over his shoulder, walking through the unfamiliar airport. He dismissed all thoughts and focused on one thing. The one reason he was here in Mumbai. His girl.
"Will you go to South Mumbai?" He asked the first taxi driver.
"Kya sab ji?" The taxi driver frowned.
Prem shook his head. "Not in London anymore." He smiled at the driver. "South Mumbai chaloge?"
"South? Bahot paise lagega sab," The taxi driver told him.
"Koi baat nahin. Le chaliye," Prem quickly got into the taxi and sped off.
Even though you're gone
I won't let you fade away
Never fade away
Never fade away
He had to tell her what she meant to him. If nothing else he needed a chance to explain and rectify his many mistakes. His phone rang suddenly and he answered with a startle. "Hello?"
"Hi Prem. It's me," Rinki said. "I wanted to give you her India number too. Just in case,"
"I'm glad you thought of it." Prem said in a relieved tone.
Rinki smiled to herself before rattling it off for him.
"Really Rinki, thank you for everything you're doing."
"I'm not doing it for you." She told him. "It's for me, and for her. I want my best friend back and she needs the love back in her life,"
Prem smiled as the many landmarks of this magnificent city passed. "Thanks again."
"Bye Prem. Good luck,"
Forty-five minutes later the taxi driver pulled up outside a rundown building and Prem got out of the taxi, handing the driver his fare.
He walked into the building feeling strong as he got into the elevator up to the 3rd floor.
Standing outside the door to 3B his heart raced. What would he say to whoever answered the door? What would he say to her?
He reluctantly pressed the doorbell. All of a sudden a dog started barking from inside, scaring Prem out of his wits. She was never that fond of dogs. Specially dogs that could bark so loud.
Pyar mera tere naal hi
Kisi aur nu na dena ni
"Kaun?" A shorter lady answered the door and judging by the dish towel in her hand Prem guessed that she was a maid.
"Woh—Meera hain?"
"Meera?" The maid frowned. She asked something in Marathi to another lady who nodded and pointed upstairs. "Aho—upar hain,"
Prem nodded and seeing a few pairs of shoes by the front door, he too slipped off his own. One of the maids led him upstairs and in the corner of the large living room he saw a brown dog sneering at him. The moment he made eye contact with the large dog he started barking.
"No Chocolate!" A masculine voice called from upstairs.
The dog, Chocolate, let out another bark before easing himself back down to the floor.
Prem curiously walked up the marble steps and a frown came to his face when he saw a guy his age sitting in the drawing room, petting a small pudgy black labrador puppy in his hand.
"Yeh kaun hain Ila tai?" He asked, glancing at Prem.
"Pata nahin. Meera memsaab se milne aaye hain," Ila told him.
"Hi," Prem stuck out his hand. "I'm Prem."
The guy smiled and stood up. "I'm Arjun,"
"Maxie!" A feminine voice called out and the small but pudgy puppy jumped from Arjun's lap hand and ran in the direction of the voice.
"I'd follow him." Arjun nodded to the doorway where the puppy disappeared into. "He'll lead you to her."
"Thank you," Prem smiled and walked through the door way.
He saw a girl bent down with her back to him petting the small puppy. "My little Maxie. Chocolate's scaring you?"
"Chocolate's scaring me too," Prem said softly.
She turned around right away, holding the puppy securely in her arms. "What are you doing here?"
"I should ask you that. What are you doing here?" Prem stepped closer.
A large gust of wind pushed the heavy door closed behind Prem and he took this as a sign from above to continue his quest. "Why did you leave me?"
"You gave me no choice Prem." Meera turned to face the large window, feeling Max's velvet skin as she pet him.
He stood directly behind her and placed his hands around her waist and watched her eyes close and her shiver.
"Pyar mera tere naal hi, Kisi aur nu na dena ni, Hoon teri yaad naal jeena, Bin tere din raat hai sazaa, Ahe dil hai tera mahive, Teri yaad bahot aati hain,"
Meera shook her head and stepped away from him. "You think you can just say that and it'll all go away?"
Prem shook his head. "You don't want to be here without me Meera. As much as I love you, I know you love me more."
"Pompous much?" She glared at him.
"I'm sorry okay?" Prem turned her to face him. "Look," He touched his ears. "I'm really sorry."
Meera smiled softly. "Do you know why I left?"
Max barked at that precise moment and Meera let him jump from her arms. They both watched him go to a small basket in the corner and settle down into it. Meera smiled and sighed.
"He's cute,"
"I know," She smiled back at Prem before frowning again. "Do you know why I left?"
Prem nodded. "You left because I neglected you, because I wasn't there for you when you needed me even though I always expected you to be there."
"You really understand that Prem?" Meera sighed.
"Meera look," Prem took her hands in his. "I love you alright? I'm not losing you because of something like this. It's not going to happen."
"Promise?" Meera asked, her eyes shining.
"Promise," Prem smiled before putting his arms securely around her back, inhaling her scent that was missing from his life. "I'm never letting you go now."
Even though you're gone
I won't let you fade away
"You better not," Meera snuggled closer to him and smiled to herself. "These three days were torture."
"For me as well," Prem admitted.
From that moment onwards Prem vowed to himself never to hurt her again. Never cause her pain to leave. Never neglect her needs. Never to let her fade away.
Never fade away
Never fade away
