Now for some short history....just as some people mentioned that they could not get the background of the marathas so i felt like writng this........
The king shown in the show is Peshwa Baji Rao II. Peshwas were the supreme leaders of the Maratha confedrecy. their seat of power was pune. The first peshwa was Balaji viswanath who became peshwa in 1713. Initially peshwas were the Prime minister of the maratha kings but later on they became the suprem leaders. The greatest peshwa was Peshwa Baji rao I who ruled from 1721- 1740. Peshwa Baji Rao II was the last in the line of the peshwas. Marathas and Britishers had faught 4 wars. After the 4th Anglo-Maratha war, where Peshwa Bajirao II was defeated by the brithshers, he was forced to leave pune. Baji rao II was exiled to Bithur near Kanpur in uttar pradesh, and became the pensioner of the british government, just like the mughal rular Bahadur shah zafar who too ruled during the same time.He moved to Bithur with his relatives, freinds, supporters, ministers and 10000 families of pune.
The current timeline in the show depicts the period of around 1841...where it has been more then 23 years for peshwa, leading a life in the exile. There is bitter rensentment and anger among the marathas over the loss to the english and they silently nurture the dream of overthrowing the english one day. Against this backdrop Manu, who after marriage will become Lakshmi bai is growing up. she carries deep hatered towards britishers. And same is the Case with Nana Sahib Peshwa, who is the adopted son Baji Rao II and Foster Brother Of Manu. Soon the Young Manu will be married off to a much elder King of jhansi, Raja Gangadhar Rao. The king will be issueless, so they will adopt a male child. But after the death of Ganga dhar rao, brtish will annex the jhansi on the pretext Of Governer general Dalhausi's Policy of " Doctrine of Lapse". Rani Lakshmi bai will oppose it and refuse to accep the subservience of the britishers. She will also join the on going revolt of 1857 against by the britishers which was inintially started as a Sepoy Mutiny. In this war she will be helped by Nana Sahib Peshwa and Tatya tope.
While carrying her infant son tied on her back, She fights till her last bredth, . But unfortunately her horse gets stuck into the mud while crossing the river near gwalior in MP, in this mishap she is overpowered by the britishers and succumbs to the fatal injuries. And thus ends the journey of the most valient and bravest fighters of the India's First War of Independence.
The place where lakshmi bai was martyred stil exists in Gwalior and has become a memorial although the river has disappered. Though they were many others too who faught the war of 1857, but I had mentioned only lakshmmi Bai to remain specific to the topic. Her associates Nana sahib and Tatya tope too were the heroes in their own right, but for thier part of the story, may be some other time.
hope u all like my little contribution...........if u do plz press the like button. :-)
