It's official. Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson are separated. Add that to the list of far too much information we have about the couple, a pair of inoffensive singers made ubiquitous and star-shaped by MTV, where Simpson confused tuna for chicken and chicken for buffalo and made us all familiar with her body's business.
The B-listers' B-listers have been the subject of rumors for months, so last week's announcement comes as no real surprise. Where the announcement came, though, was: US Weekly, the magazine that hounded the couple in the name of millions of readers.
In the end, few marriages, no matter how solid, could endure such relentless scrutiny, such lies and rumors. True, Nick and Jessica brought a lot of this upon themselves by making their married life a virtual open book through the unblinking lens of reality TV. But viewers were all too happy to devour the samplings.
So US Weekly, and we readers by extension, have done our bit to end another high-profile marriage, even if it was only to giggle over the carcass. Do we all feel better now?
