Rippling muscles and well toned bodies don't just top the priority list of Bollywood leading men, the poster boys of the television are flaunting them with equal enthusiasm. Be it Eijaz Khan in Bhaskar Bharti, Hiten Tejwani in Kitani Mohabbat Hai, Saurabh Pandey in Shaurya Aur Suhani Tarun Khanna in Kahaniyan Vikram Aur Betaal Ki or Karan Singh Grover in Miley Jab Hum Tum, the dishy dudes of television are out to woo audiences with their fab abs and bulging biceps.
The trend has recently caught up with television as a majority of telly buffs today are youngsters. For these viewers fit and agile actors are definitely a treat to watch feels Saurabh Pandey, who plays Shaurya in Shaurya Aur Suhani. "Everybody these days is health conscious. A well toned body is in and television is moving with the times.
Moreover, there are benefits of having a good body, you can play any character. A 39-year-old with a toned body looks around 10 years younger," he quips.
In fact a toned body is a 'ticket to fame' feels Hiten tejwani. "A good body is like an added advantage. Especially if you are into showbiz, it certainly gives a boost to your career like knowing how to dance does. Many budding actors sweat it out with the hope of getting a break in TV and we also have models opting for the small screen. When there are so many guys with good bodies around why would producers opt for someone without this advantage?" quips Hiten.
Like their 70 mm counterparts, these stars also have a huge fan following, who look up to them. "So it becomes necessary to maintain a standard and not let them down" says Rohit Bakshi, who plays Raja Ratan Singh in Chittor Ki Rani Padmini. "Many fans aspire to acquire a body like their favourite TV stars, so it's my responsibility to ensure I don't disappoint them," adds Rohit. He further explains that he had to undergo weight training to fit into the larger than life character that he portrays in the soap. "I play a Rajput warrior prince. To perfect my scenes I had to learn sword fighting and train extensively to look like Raja Ratan Singh," adds Rohit.
Saurabh too concedes that he had to undergo rigorous training for his role in Shauya Aur Suhani. "I am a fitness freak but I had to work hard for the show. I focused more on weight training and followed a healthy diet.
For me a workout accounts for 20 per cent of the fitness factor. The other 80 per cent is about diet. I carry my own food to the sets."
Apart from the 'look good factor,' Eijaz Khan feels staying fit is important for TV actors given the demanding nature of their work. "We put in long hours at work and at times have to shoot continuously without a break.
In such a scenario, it is important to take extra care of your health. Fitness can't be compromised upon. I used to shoot 20 hours in a day for Kavyanjali but everyday after pack up, I would hit the gym at an unearthly hour and work out. Sweating it out after a hard day of work is an integral part of Western lifestyle. It's good to see that this trend is catching up among TV actors now," adds Eijaz.
