And I do hope you enjoy this part of your gift. The other bit will be late. 😆 Story of my life. 😆
Enjoy!
Shifali stepped onto the train, her mood already brightening as she made her way down the aisle to her usual seat. Her day had been long and tiring, but the train ride home from work always made her day. She sank gratefully into the seat, her eyes landing on the empty seat at the other end of the carriage.
Two stops later, she sat up expectantly, waiting for that seat to be occupied with the usual person. She did not know what his name was, but he always sat there, and he was the highlight of her day. They exchanged smiles daily, both obviously exhausted after work, but he always had a grin on his face when he looked up at her. She could never not respond in kind, he had that effect on her. The smile was one that warmed her insides, and she did not know when she had come to look forward to the little interaction she had with her 'smiling friend'. Her friends were wont to tease her about her infatuation with the man, but she only smilingly responded that if they ever saw him, they would not be making fun of her. Meera had nodded, but Ravjot had refused to believe her.
The train began to move again, and her heart sank as the familiar face did not come into view. She cast her eyes about, looking for him. She bit her lip as she came to the unhappy conclusion that he was not there. He had not turned up.
"Stupid," she muttered to herself. "It's not as if you made a date or anything."
A shadow fell across her face, and someone hesitantly cleared their throat. She looked up and paused, her breath catching. He was standing next to her, looking a little embarrassed.
"Is this seat taken?" He gave her a small smile. She tore her gaze away from his intense brown ones and managed to respond. He sank down in the empty seat next to her. She coloured, pushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear.
He stuck out a hand towards her. "I'm Prem."
She smiled at him. She placed her hand in his, inwardly wondering if he felt the tingles that had encompassed her body too. "Shifali."
"Nice to finally put a name to the smile," he told her. She wondered if he was consciously rubbing circles on the back of her hand.
It was an unconscious gesture on both their parts when their hands remained entwined throughout the train ride, even as they both talked about everything, from jobs and families to the dreams they had had as children. It was with a heavy heart that Shifali realised her stop had come some 45 minutes later, and she got up reluctantly, her hand slipping out from under his. She walked a few steps before stopping and turning around.
"Do you want to join me for dinner?" The words slipped out almost as though someone were speaking through her. She turned red as it dawned on her just how forward she had been, but his answering smile, and the fact that he rose to join her had her heart singing.
As they alighted the train, side by side, Shifali snuck a glance at him. Her Mystery Man was turning into her Prince Charming right in front of her eyes, and he was attainable.
Do let me know what you guys think.
And Shifu...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
