This hunk is not just an actor
Srabanti Chakrabarti
It is not every day that you come across a television actor who is looking for a publisher to publish his book. It is not often that you come across an actor who is passionate about painting. And it is not frequently that you come across a tele-star who is an alumnus of renowned institutions like Bishop Cotton School in Simla and Knox College in the US. But then, you don't come across a Mayank Anand (better known as Dr Rahul from Dil Mill Gayee) every day.
The young lad originally from Kapurthala, Punjab moved to Simla while in school and then to the city of dreams at the age of 18. "When I came to Mumbai, I had no plans of joining the entertainment industry. I cam here to study and enrolled myself for a graduation course in English Literature in St Xavier's College," remembers the handsome actor. He completed his graduation and then went to the US to pursue higher studies. "I was always interested in writing and had written a lot of short stories and poems during my student days, so I decided to study English Literature, English Writing and Theatre Performance from Knox College," explains Mayank.
"It was during my stay in the US that I developed an interest for designing furniture. What started off as a pass time hobby, soon turned into a job for me and I started conceptualizing and designing furniture for various plays and places as well," says Mayank with a smile. Incidentally, ever piece of furniture in Mayank's tastefully decorated apartment in suburban Mumbai has been designed by him. Not one to be satisfied at doing a single job, Mayank dabbled into advertising as well, while in the US. "I used to stay very close to Chicago and worked for some time as an Assistant Art Director in an advertising firm. It was great fun and a lot of learning for me," remember the actor who speaks with a thick American accent.
"The accent is because of the many years I spent in the US. In fact, this is also why I get mostly NRI roles," says Mayank with a tinge of sadness. The new track in Dill Mil Gayee also has him as a person who has returned from America! Earlier, in the show Hotel Kingston on Star One, he played an NRI boyfriend. But there have also been roles where he has not played an NRI, like Hello Dollie on Star Plus, Bombay Talking on Zee Caf and (a telefilm) on Star One. Not to mention the anchoring of Cinesong on Zee Music.
Of late, however, Mayank was embroiled in a controversy regarding his character in Dill Mil Gayee. "I was not very happy with the way my character was shaping up and after meetings with the creative team, decided to part ways," says the actor who quit the serial few months back and had to come back on popular demand. In fact, all his fans started an online petition campaign and submitted it to the producers of the show. "After another round of discussions with the production house and creative team, here I am – back as Dr Rahul in the show," explains Mayank.
Right now, however, Mayank is concentrating completely on his book titled Love from the Sidelines. "The story is about a husband, wife and an extra marital affair. The book provides the story from the other woman's perspective. I felt this is a side which very few people think about," says the writer who also has a passion for paintings. "I specialize in Shiv Shakti paintings and all my creations deal with Lord Shiva and his power," says the artist whose interest in painting started while modeling for Art students to provide pocket money during his stay in the US. If you thought that was all Mayank was interested in, you are mistaken. He also is a great knowledge bank on fish and has a Siamese Fighter in a jar at his home. "The uniqueness of this fish is the fact that they have to be alone in a jar. If you put another fish in the same jar, the fighter is going to kill it. They cannot tolerate intrusion," says the multi-faceted genius.
