Jalandhar Mail

A new show on television brings in a truckload of stars to the city. There's veteran actor Ranjeet dropping his mean streak, Rakhi Sawant's boyfriend making an identity, Baba Sehgal doing what he's best at....JAGMEETA THIND JOYbrings a roundup

Till now all the joint families that you've probably caught on television have a) squabbling mother-in-laws b) forever plotting daughter-in-laws c) basically, a lot of unpleasantness. In an effort to make the audience out there less skeptical about joint set-ups, SAB TV has brought in the Bhalla parivaar. This is one happy Punjabi family from Jalandhar complete with the Bauji, his bossy-yet-affable wife and a couple of doting sons and their better-halves. Coming from the Tony and Deeya Singh stable (the makers of Left Right Left, Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin), the show 'Jugni Chali Jalandhar' is being pegged as a one of a kind comedy soap which stars a couple of veterans alongside a bunch of new comers. There's veteran actor Ranjeet and Alka Sachdev as the elders, Baba Sehgal and Rakhi Sawant's down-to-earth boyfriend Abhishek Avasthi as the sons and newcomer Karan Godwan and Muskan Mehani as the love-struck couple. Quite like the downpour we had on Friday, these stars poured in the city along with the biggies from the channel. Here's a who-said-what of it all.

Mean No More : Minus a few giveaways on his face that show he's aged, veteran actor Ranjeet looks exactly like how we've seen him onscreen. "Only now I am not running after a woman trying to molest her," the actor laughs in his stride. Having played the really bad man in films, Ranjeet has turned a new leaf with his foray into television. "The concept really appealed to me and that's what got me to sign up. As far as acting goes, I don't find any difference in the two mediums," says the actor who plays the Punjabi patriarch who doesn't like educated women! "Otherwise I have no such issues," he laughs. On a more serious note, he's not yet doing a Bollywood flick for "I am not ready to do tit-bit roles." But there's a movie in the pipeline and he's the one directing it.

Stepping Out Of the Shadows : Even though Abhishek Avasthi brought home the ZEE Cinestars Ki Khoj title, it's taken him long to find his feet as an actor in the industry. The fact that he's Rakhi Sawant's boyfriend has much to do with it. "I think I have had my share of dance shows and I now want to concentrate on my acting career," admits Avasthi who plays a brawny Maninder Bhalla on 'Jugni Chali Jalandhar'. And unlike his controversial girlfriend, Abhishek wants to play safe. "This is a great debut for me on television. The banner's good and so is my role," he answered. The fact that his love life has been much explored by the media, Abhishek's not cribbing. "We are celebrities and such things are bound to happen." Bring up Rakhi and he mellows down even more. "She's been misunderstood. In reality she's very down to earth and helpful person," the boyfriend shares.

Sream Debut : Until now, 20-year-old Karan Godwan was used to being in the background. This former dancer from Shiamak Davar's team finally decided to step out. "I have schooled in Spain and came back after finishing high school," informs Karan who plays the youngest son Vicky. With no connections to pull, this newcomer decided to give it all. "I must have given a million auditions and then Jugni Chali Jalandhar came my way," Karan's happy to have made it finally. On the show he's pairing up with Muskan Mehani who plays the lead as Jugni. Muskan's not new to television, having done shows like Dil Mil Gayee and Mamta.

Second Stint : The last time we bumped into singer and once-in-a-while actor Baba Sehgal, he was busy crooning on NDTV Imagine's show 'Dhoom Macha De'. While Jaspinder Narula went on to win that, Baba Sehgal has emerged once as an actor on 'Jugni Chali Jalandhar'. "I am a Punjabi and what better way to show it off than by acting in such a soap that brings out the best of a Punjabi family," mentioned the singer who even gets to rap while playing his character of Balwinder Bhalla. With an album in the making, he has enough to keep him busy and us too!

An arranged marriage for Muskaan

Her admirers were disheartened on reading reports of her link-up with actor Karan Godwani. For a while Muksaan Mehani kept mum but she's finally clearing all rumours.

The bubbly actress was spotted in a playful mood on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. Muskaan with the cast of Jugni Chali Jalandhar and other actors representing other SAB shows gathered at a suburban club to celebrate the festival of Makar Sankranti. Needless to say that that her co-actor from Jugni.. Karan Godwani was also present. The two were spotted flying kites.

Later, when we put forth the million dollar question of whether she's seeing Karan, Muskaan replied, "Just because two people dine together, one assumes them to be a couple. I'm not seeing Karan and I'm very much single. There are certain things which I have to clear to everyone. Not only am I single but I'm least interested in seeing anybody. I'll settle for an arranged marriage only."

Arranged marriage! Your parents don't approve of love marriage?

"No. On the contrary my mother keeps telling me why is it that you haven't found any good looking man from the industry so that I can at least participate in Nach Baliye. . Well, I'm clear that I wouldn't marry any guy from the industry. I've told them they can look for my Mr.Right," the actress sighed.

So, all you eligible bachelors what are you waiting for just send your resumes to the Mehani family

Abhishek is acting seriously...

We have all heard stories of actors who go out of their way to research to get into the skin of the character.
Abhishek Avasti (TOI Photo)

There are actors who claim to have lived with jhuggiwalas before they play a jhuggiwala on screen, actors who spend time with sex workers to bring a touch of reality to a sex worker's character that they are suppose to play.

Abhishek Avasti did something similar while shooting for the show Jugni Chali Jalandhar on Sab. He not only gave the shot a realistic touch but took it a little too seriously.

While shooting for one of the scenes, Abhishek was supposed to sleep, while his on-screen brothers, Baba Segal and Karan Godwan, were to play a prank on him. The scene was shot well and everyone decided to go for lunch. While the unit wrapped up and was heading towards lunch, Abhishek got up yawning and asked if the scene was shot okay? It was then that everyone realised that Abhishek actually went off to sleep! The crew had a good laugh and pulled Abhishek's leg.

Abhishek confessed, "Everyone started making fun of me." But the actor took the entire thing in good humour and said, "Everyone should learn the art of acting from me." Sure Abhishek, that is called getting into the skin of the character!

What's common between John and Abhishek?

John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan might have created a furore in Dostana but there's another Abhishek who's quite a fan of apna John –

and that's Abhishek Awasthi!

The actor who can be seen in Jugni Chali Jalandhar on SAB, Monday to Thursday at 9.30 pm, is quite taken in by John's fit body and his passion for bikes. He has maintained a six-pack ever since he started shooting for the daily show. That's not the only thing, Abhi has also modified his bike to give it a sporty look. "Driving is my passion. I was 18 when my parents bought me my first bike. As a youngster, I have won many bike races – not professional but with my friends," he laughs.

GEC Genre: Sab TV sees 70% all day GRP growth

Friday - Jan 16, 2009
Tushar Patel - Televisionpoint.com | Mumbai
After a few months of re-revamping its avatar, Sab TV seems to have finally got it right on account of its differentiated programming strategy. The family comedy channel from the house of MSM India has been gradually increasing its hold on the Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC) genre.

As per TAM Media Research data on C&S 4+, HSM audience, Sab TV's channel share has grown to 5 per cent in the second week of 2009 from an average of 2.1 per cent in June last year. In Week 2, its relative channel share was 4.7 per cent, and the channel claims to have increased its GRPs by 70 per cent and as per the Week 2 data, its GRPs are 51.

Sab TV has been struggling very hard to get its hold together ever since it was bought over by Sony Entertainment Television (nom MSM India). The channel has experimented with many facelifts like being a second GEC, a youth channel, a comedy channel and, now, the final makeover as a family comedy channel.

Anooj Kapoor, business head, Sab TV, says, "Our family comedy channel positioning has worked very well for us and the differentiated programming has hit a right chord with the viewers. We are proud to have sustained our performance with regular growth over the past months."

In the last few months, Sab TV has launched a series of daily comedy shows such as Main Kab Saas Banoongi, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma, Jugni Chali Jalandhar and Lo Ho Gayi Pooja Iss Ghar Ki. Most of these shows have women protagonists.

"We are confident that we will further consolidate our position with the current hit shows and a slew of new shows which are slated to launch in the coming months. We had decided to have women protagonists to lure the female audience from the GECs." says Kapoor.

The overall GRP of GECs has dipped from 1,221 in Week 1 to 1,174 in Week 2. Star Plus continues to be number one channel with 297 GRPs. Colors, with 260 GRP, retains its number two rank and has garnered a relative share of 22 per cent.

Zee TV, the number three channel, has increased its GRP from 188 in Week 1 to 196 in Week 2. Its relative share stands at 17 per cent. At number four is Sony, which has seen a drastic fall in its GRP from 126 in Week 1 to 85 in Week 2.

Star One and NDTV Imagine remain equal, with a relative share of 6 per cent each, as their GRPs stand at 73 and 67, respectively. Sahara One has a relative share of 4 per cent.

9X, which continues to show repeat telecast of its programs, has been witnessing a decline in its GRP for a few weeks now. With 39 GRP, its channel share stands at 3 per cent.
