We knew the address of the man we were looking for as we made our way down the crowded platform at Mathura railway station at 7.45 am on Wednesday with two tickets to board Paschim Express, coming from Mumbai and headed for Delhi. The train had stopped at Mathura for 15 minutes.
Before we got a glimpse of don Abu Salem, we waded through a river of khaki-clad policemen on the train's aisle. And there he was, sitting beside the only shut window of the train, in white T-shirt, blue jeans and a black jacket.
This is the man being tried for murders including that of music baron Gulshan Kumar and businessman Pradeep Jain, helping in the '93 bomb blasts and numerous extortions. This is the man who is rumoured to call up the victim's family after a killing and ask coldly why he could not hear mourners wailing loud enough.
The team had booked berth numbers 25-30. His berth was guarded by around 17 officials of the Mumbai police, his lawyers and a few relatives. Salem tried to hide from us during the whole journey. He refused to answer questions posed by MiD DAY. He, if we noticed right, blushed.
At the end, he willingly posed, and even managed get people around to laugh.
Monica, still his darling

When we asked Salem about his reaction towards Rahul Mahajan and Monika Bedi flirting on a reality show, Salem's nephew Mohammed Rashid Ansari, who was accompanying him, quipped: "Salem chacha has asked me to convey that he did not mind Monica Bedi's so-called affair with Rahul Mahajan. Salem chacha is okay with it since it is only reality TV, and Monica is a professional actor. He knows it is all part of the script, although the media have shown it in a different light."
Salem's lawyer confirmed that his client would not let go of Monica, would try to stop a divorce. "There are no parallels between Salem-Monica marriage and the Sanjay Dutt-Manyata one. Manyata was already married when she wed Sanjay, but Monica is very much married to Salem," he said. "And Rahul and Monica are just good friends."
He said Salem got very emotional when he read in print that Monica had claimed that's she was not his wife.
