What do you look for?

It's a common thing to say "I've enjoyed" a certain performance...but what does it really mean?

When one makes a comment like "I enjoyed that dance" or "I disliked that dance" what basis do they make their comment on?

Well, I don't come in with any preconceptions I guess. Honestly, the first thing I do look for is general footwork and how clean someone's steps are. Obviously losing balance is not a good thing. For example if it is a group performance, I look to see how everyone's steps are matching. Also I look to see how difficult the steps are or how unique they are. If it something that seems to bring something new from the song not just copying the exact choreography from the film or the music video. Personally liking or disliking a song does not greatly affect my judgment. Although I do have a great liking for some actress or actor, that does not stop me from finding flaws in a performance. As far as dance styles go, I don't think I am biased, but I do like to see people trying new things. Certainly though I am not clueless so someone trying a new style alone does not impress me as much as how their execution is in terms of footwork and how good their choreography is. Sorry for going on and on, but I am not a judge so my basis for looking is more qualitative than quantitative.

Hmmm...I just started watching this show...thanks to youtube😆....and from what I've watched so far....here's what I think.....not just about the dancing, but overall....

In the earlier epis (where I am, currently) the girls, with slight exceptions, focussed more on how much sensuality they could put into their performances rather than actual dancing or proper choreography.

The guys started better...had more intricate choreography and seemed more of a unit....I haven't watched the epis in b/w so dunno how it got after that....

And I'm sorry to say this, but the girls tend to be nastier in their digs at the guys (especially Narayani and Karishma...they seem to have some bitter issues from the past😆)....The guys do take digs back at them as well, but they are more humorous about them....I guess a lot of credit for that goes to Ali....he's funny😆

Now, focusing just on what would be the definition of a 'good performance' for me atleast....it would be a good combination of choreography, the rhythm of the dancer involved, if they have a natural grace, elegance or style to their dancing, energy, and above all, seem to be really 'into' their performance and not just doing it for the heck of it....I've noticed that seems to happen in a lot of shows where these celebrities are dancing and I wonder if they even rehearsed once before landing up on the stage to make fools of themselves. If dancing doesn't come naturally to some ppl, they should realize that they'll have to work just that much harder to be able to match up to ppl who have a natural knack for it and don't need many rehearsals.

as an audience...the main thing dat matters for me is the person performing ...de song n originality.....if its sumthin ive ceen befor...den i get bored very easily

A good performance consists of a few things - as an example take Mouni's performance with the song 'Saiyaan':

1. Good concept
2. A versatile dancer adding more to the concept through her own experience. Being a committed performer, Mouni really got into the concept and in the end, couldn't stop crying!
3. Excellent use of the set & props,
4. the dress she wore really made the all moves clear.
5. One of the best songs of our time, perfectly matches the concept.
6. Blend of dance styles
7. Icing on the cake is that Mouni rocks with her expressions too.

I had to say ' WOW' to that 👍🏼
Other WOW performance were from Chaitanya and Amit-Jenni, pop ^ lock from Bakhtiyar and Narayni

To me, dance comes first. But it's great to get know the celebs a bit more. Shweta is the most adorable chatterbox, Narayani has a special smile and Jenni looks beautiful all the time. Not to forget that I had the best laugh when Karan showed up wearing that strange looking whatever. 😊 ZND gets bonus points for these factors 😉

^^^ I agree, Chaitanya, Amit-Jenni and Narayani's 'pop n lock' performance (even though it was actually more hip hop) were all WOW.

A special mention for Chaitanya (yun shabnami) and Amit-Jenni's performances cuz one of the major wow factors in both those performances (for me atleast) were their expressions....very well done. Ashita's say na say na was excellent as well for the sheer energy with and mazaa with which she performed it.

Mouni's Saiyyan performance was superlative as well...but the gymnastics ( like the rolling over the head part) felt slightly odd to me in that song....as did Chaitanya's in Tanhaayee....maybe it's just me😕😕

hey Anu...I don't understand the "nastier digs" that Narayani and Karishma made???😕 could you point out some to me? because as far as I've watched it there really haven't been any nasty digs (except for Bakhtiyaar calling Karishma a horse in hindi)? Thanks😊

@Shweta: 😆😆 I'm talking about the general way in which Narayani and Karishma retort to the guys...always harping on the same point about ego...it's always got a nasty undertone to it while the guys have a more humorous way of replying back to them. Just what I felt😊....no offence intended to anyone.

yeah, though the performers blended in the gymnastics part quite well, other moves might have been more appropriate. The judges were mentioning that contemporary dance don't always require sync and some and there should be some abstract elements to it. Maybe the choreographers are trying to incorporate things just to impress the judges?

About the digs, most of it is TRP stunt I guess. As the actors are usually very careful about how they present themselves to the audience, I don't think they would cross any limits for real, not on stage at least. Anyways, the boys have been a bit rude on some occasions.
