Image Log only the books you finish or DNF from November 1, 2025 to November 30, 2025. The logging will start and end at midnight whatever time zone you're in. The logging will officially stop at midnight December 1, 2025, 11.59 EDT/December 1, 2025, 9:29 PM IST.

Image Log books within 3 days of finishing / DNFing them. Please DO NOT log pages that you intend to read or page counts of books that are in your TBR. ONLY FINISHED PAGES SHOULD BE LOGGED!

Image Add the book title/ author/ format and page count to the post you have reserved in your team’s thread (which will be posted by your captain). You will edit this post as you keep reading. You will also be adding the same page counts in the Google sheet that will be shared in your team’s thread.

Image Wherever possible, please use Amazon’s page counts for logging pages. For ebooks and audiobooks, use Kindle page counts. For paperbacks and hardcovers, use paperback page counts. If you cannot find the book on Amazon, you can use other legitimate sources.

Image For online fiction, use word count divided by 300 to log pages.

Image If you DNF, or if you are continuing a book from a previous month, log only the pages you’ve read this month. You can use percentage read (at the point of DNF) for ebooks, actual page numbers for paperbacks and for audiobooks, log pages based on number of hours read (40 pages per hour at normal speed)

Image You are responsible for tracking your own reading. Please keep an accurate log of the books you finish. We trust you to be honest. And while we understand the spirit of competitiveness, please also remember that the Reading Challenge is designed to motivate you to read more and beat your own personal counts, so you are competing with yourself!

Image Lastly, have fun! This is not meant to stress you out, or cause a burn out, it's meant to nurture a love of reading. Read what you can, how much you can, when you can!

and here my November-page..

Originally, I wanted to decline because of the amount of work I have coming up towards the end of the year, but now I'm glad to participate after all... and that's because of the name of the team I'm in.

Glasgow, football, the Glasgow Rangers... it inspired me to look for crime novels related to Glasgow or to authors born/living in Glasgow. I already know Scottish writers like Val McDermid and Ian Rankin (latter making me familiar with Edinburgh through Rebus and his investigations, former giving me the endearing character of Tony Hill)... now I did research for writers not yet read... and I found more than I expected smiley1

My first choice are two books of Louise Welsh who lives in Glasgow (teaching creative writing): her debut novel (2002) and a sequel to it 20 years later. Like her fellow writer Val McDermid, also Welsh is queer, so it isn't astonishing that her protagonist in both novels is a gay auctioneer called Rilke (like the German poet), a man with his own "code of moral values", not always likable and very curious. The second protagonist is Glasgow.

1) The Cutting Room (317 p.) - A part of Rilke's job is to clear houses of deseased persons for the auction house of which he is an enployee. When doing that - in a posh part of Glasgow - he comes across some really disturbing photos (quoting Welsh: "yeah, it's a nasty book") and he wants to know more about what they show (the real murdering of a woman or a staged one). The idea of "what lies underneath" is very much a part of Scottish Gothic (a quite dark, even gory kind of crime/thriller novels with Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde as a defining example). ... "dark" and "darkness", but also humour are ingredients of a writing, I thoroughly enjoyed... A pivotal moment in the book is a nocturnal police raid in a park where Welsh's themes of transgression, hypocrisy and rules of law collide and whenever a street or part of Glasgow was mentioned, I looked it up on Google maps smiley1.

Why a sequel to the debut novel after 20 years? Quoting Louise Welsh: "The World has really changed, you know... we have the possibility of equal marriage. You don't have to get married but you can if you wish to. And it struck me, you know, 20 years on from writing the Cutting Room, that I wanted to explore some of these changes. Because there are other ways of being as well. When Rilke initially comes on the scene, mobile phones have started, but there's no Tinder, there's no Grindr, there's no hooking up through the internet. There's no chemsex, there's none of this stuff. So I wanted to have a look in at how the world has changed and how Rilke would be in that landscape. So I've written another book. I've gone back to Rilke's world... and I've really enjoyed it."

2) The Second Cut (381 p) - Although there is murder (Rilke's friend), this novel has other shades of darkness. This time, the connection is between this murder, the clearance of a house far away from Glasgow to the Glasgow-world of crime families and drug & sex orgies. ... Again, I enjoyed what I read, Welsh's writing of characters, situations, motivations and of Glasgow. smiley1
