A daily show heroine might not have a lot of things from common sense to acting skills but the 3 things she never lacks are makeup, new costumes (regardless of how poor she’s shown) and challenges.
Ekta even ended the 1st season with a challenge - to Tulsi and our mental faculties at the same time regarding why Parvati had to call her all the way to an isolated, abandoned cliff to simply tell her she’s raised Parth. Everyone had to do a lot of mental gymnastics to figure out how did Parth even land with Parvati, how did they miss him in so many KGGK episodes, how did no crossover episode lead to the reunion of the Virani family with their child thanks to the Aggarwals; and most importantly, why couldn’t Parvati have simply conveyed this to Tulsi in a restaurant or a cafe or even a Mandir or any regular place. Why did they have to go to the cliff again where Tulsi made a human kite out of her son?
I was a kid at that time and didn't watch S1. However, I've read Ekta and Star had ugly fights and they went to court against each other. Kyunki's trp had dropped to abysmal low and Star just wanted to get rid of it after 8 long years.
@bold
Vrindra does lack kapde sometimes and Mihir his brain lol
Par Noyna (Barkha) Tulsi (Smriti) Nandini (Gauri) Shobha (Ritu) are phenomenal actors.
I just love them.
S2 has thunderstorms but bgm thode aur chahiye and some camera angles too lol.
I love the show overall.
I was in my teens when suddenly the news came that ALL the Balaji shows were being pulled off air by SP. I guess they gave her a month or two at most to wrap everything up.
The issue came up because SP was killing it from ad revenues from all her shows. The higher the TRP of a show, the more money the channel can charge for selling slots to companies to air their commercials between shows/movies/events etc. from advertisers.
SP was ruling the roost of course courtesy all her shows, they even aired dubbed versions of the shows on their other channels in various Indian languages as well as partnered with channels in foreign countries where they didn’t have a Star Network channel but probably something owned by the Fox/Murdoch group or other media companies to air these shows in their local languages too as foreign language content primarily in African, Latin American and other Asian countries. Star Group made a hefty profit because from what I recall reading in an article, the original K trio were the most popular and expensive shows to buy adspace on. A 10 second ad on either of these shows would cost a company anything from 60 lakhs to 1 crore. Mind you, this figure was for 10 seconds alone. An average show of 30 minutes has anything from 17-23 minutes of content and the rest are ads. Even a 7 minutes ad slot for any of these shows was making a fortune for the Star Group across the board. They even got a cut of the ad revenue from channels that aired the show abroad in dubbed versions. Essentially, Star invested in the show for Ekta to produce, develop it and do all the work and deal with all the headaches. They even owned the commercial intellectual copyrights of ALL her shows. Essentially, they could make a show with a different production house, for a different language and copy the show beat for beat while Ekta wouldn’t make anything beyond the bare minimum.
Ekta naturally wanted more money after a point since essentially her shows were being used to mint money and that’s when shit hit fan. They denied to increase her share and also accused her of unfairly using the shows to promote her own movies without giving them any monetary compensation or so much as seeking any approval from them. Things got nasty and ugly so the shows were cancelled hastily and we saw most of the shows from back then having a very abrupt ending. Kyunki having the most absurd one of them all too perhaps.
Ekta didn’t return to make a show for Star until years later when the channel head changed and they made Yeh Hai Mohabbatein together. Funnily, YHM was supposed to be a limited series of 150/175 episodes. But it exploded on the scene so quickly and gave SP their first hit in the late night slot after Kahiin Toh Hoga was pulled off air, which was at its peak till Rajeev was on the show. The show kept getting extended and ran for nearly 8 years. Ishita would also recreate the iconic Tulsi scene and shoot her son in the same spot, leading to him flying mid-air for almost an entire episode the same way
As for Kapde and brains, they’re always in limited supply.
Regarding the actors, I truly believe Ekta’s merit has shown the most in her casting choices more than anything else. The shows she makes ultimately meander from their original premise and end up becoming the same old nonsense. It’s her choice of actors and particularly her eye for picking the right actors for the right roles - be it for main leads, comic reliefs, supporting characters or the vamps - is remarkable and she truly is unparalleled when it comes to getting her pairings right. She has rarely cast a pair that looked mismatched or which didn’t have an amazing chemistry onscreen. It’s the actors who have always managed to keep people hooked to her shows no matter how bad they got or how much they stretched regardless of how much people complained and cribbed.
Of course the irony in all of this is that while Ekta still makes money from reruns and dubbed versions of her shows regardless of the channel and platforms they air on, even if in a limited amount, it’s these actors who never get their share of royalties from their shows being rerun or dubbed endlessly across the board. The actors and the crew get that one time payment for their jobs - that’s it. Channels and producers can endlessly reap off of it forever.
