Not all of it is bad. There are absolute no-nos even in non-fiction (other than your course work smiley36).

But I do get why non-fiction is boring and painful to read.

I agree to a certain degree. I really like reading editorial opinions ( in newspapers ), real life incidents ( which is non fiction right ?) and histories. But these self help books, finance and auto biographies in non fiction genre are really not my cup of tea. smiley44

Agreed.

I loathe them. They are boring because well crudely speaking, they come from a single perspective of showing off their success and looking down at normal people and to preach everything as if all problems are just some state of mind, which regular people are too lazy to understand and rectify.

Because they are written by people who are showing off (in case of biographies) or think it is easy to guide... All of them believe themselves to be very self important characters. If you have read Dickens' Hard Times, then think of the non-fic protagonists and narrators as Josiah Bounderby.smiley37 (I once came across similar person in real life. And guess what, his favourite books were all biographies of big CEOs. And to quote him, he loved them. Absolute red flag I swear!)

I despise teaching autobiographies of narcisstic people... Thankfully, they all use formula writing, so I don't have to put much effort in teaching them and they usually all come with a self-proclaimed label, making it easier to avoid them.

And yes you are right. Those books you mentioned are non-fiction. There are many books in this category that actually move beyond this formula-based writing and have substance in them. If you love reading editorials, histories and real life incidents, you will certainly fall in love with the good stuff non-fic offers.

All in all, you have a better, refined taste as a reader!

@b: yup, that’s exactly it. I dislike reading autobiographies because one they are narcissistic, and two, I feel one formula suits all doesn’t work. People are different so everyone can and would have a different perspective, different challenges and self help books often tend to generalise which I don’t like.

@blue: I’m running away from such people too smiley37

@pink: that really means a lot, thank you! smiley27

Yeah ikwym smiley24

I got so many of my holds from my library - that I’ve been waiting so long to read, but now I’m overwhelmed at the number of books I’ve checked out and not sure I can finish them all, so I’m DNFing more than I’m reading this month smiley29. If I don’t like the book in the first couple of chapters, sorry but in my DNF pile you go!

Trying to go at the pace of one book a day, so DNFing books that are slowing me down smiley36

I just finished chapter 8 of my book, I like it but the last chapter was too long and took me half a day to finish it. I don't even remember half the stuff that happened now because I was reading it in the car just trying to finish it.smiley37
