Both sides have a point to prove after a poor start to their campaign which sees them carry on the abysmal form from last season. Last season, MI finished bottom of the standings, and GT had to settle for eighth position. Ahmedabad is also where the booing began for Pandya, and it was just over a year ago, when he faced a hostile crowd on his return to the venue. It was the same venue which treated him like a hero in two glorious IPL seasons, where he was GT skipper and also won the title in their debut campaign. But ahead of IPL 2024, he returned to MI, where he replaced Rohit Sharma as skipper, and it was seen as betrayal by the GT faithful. The booing began in Ahmedabad last season, and it continued to most venues, and even the MI fans went against Hardik after the team’s abysmal form throughout the campaign. Will he be booed again? It seems improbable as a lot has happened since the disappointing IPL 2024 season. He played a match-winning role in the 2024 T20 World Cup final, and was also part of the Champions Trophy 2025-winning squad.

MI are known for their slow starts, and in the past they have staged a comeback to qualify for the playoffs and even reach the final to win the title. But last season, the team never woke up, and the dressing room looked dysfunctional. There were signs of disapproval from even Jasprit Bumrah, when it came to Pandya’s captaincy during matches. There was an incident where Pandya was seen ignoring Rohit’s advice too. The spotlight will also be on Rohit, who was dismissed for a duck in the previous fixture. The MI opener will be up against the likes of Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada, which means he won’t really get the time to settle, and will need to be in good touch.

MI face a side which looks strong, despite their defeat in their opening game. GT have added the likes of Jos Buttler, Sherfane Rutherford and Rabada to their ranks.
