Yes, this exactly. In this day and age where everything is polluted in more than one sense it's not going to make much of a difference. Also it's said Naama Japa is the most effective way in the Kali Yuga.
The Sangam dipping concept hinges on a metaphor. The three rivers represent the three naadis ( channels) in your pranic system. Sushumna in the center with the 7 chakras , Pingala and Ida on either side , they channel Sattva ,Rajas and Tamas respectively. As our mind ,intellect and indriyas channel these energies we end up interacting with the world and incurring karma , some of which counts as sin. When we bathe in the stream of Jnaana , the Supreme knowledge ,we rise above these energies, we rise above our senses and attachment to the world ,eventually clearing ourselves of 'sin'. Whatever time we have left on earth would be spent on what the Gita calls Nishkaama Karma ,action without attachment. So not exactly a literal ritual in a river . And all of this is extremely challenging in the Kali Yuga. Even if you find the right teacher to give you that knowledge ,with the incurred karmic imprints of so many lifetimes it's very hard to focus on an austere life in a chaotic world. So surrendering yourself to God and uttering his or her name with devotion would be way more effective compared to symbolic rituals.
As a cultural event the Kumbh Mela is a great idea . Believers get to gather in a place, meet each other and share experiences ,even meet learned holy people on their way ,a sense of togetherness etc. But unfortunately that's not what's happening there. IIT Babas, Item Girl Matajis and insta influencers have taken over. And with all the safety hazards it's a tragedy waiting to happen , if that stampede was an indication.
