I had watched couple of his films when I was a kid. I feel that his contributions to the growth, popularity and success of the Hindi film industry has been immense. He not just made memorable movies as an actor but more so as a director. Also, if you talk about his films which he directed, you not just about the actors. You also talk about the story, music, cinematography, costumes, everything. He made movies for every generation. He made social movies like Prem Rog for the older generation, love stories like Bobby for the younger generation of that time.

Unfortunately the current generation only remembers him for his offscreen personal life and introducing nepotism in bollywood. For me, he is beyond all these and people should talk more about Raj Kapoor as an actor, producer, director and nothing else. After all, he too was an imperfect human being like all of us are.

Yep, great song. This trio type song was done a lot by Shankar Jaikishan - they used it in Sangam too with Har dil jo pyar karega. Interesting to have diff points of view from 3 people. The lyricists were the real GOATs here.

Raj Kapoor's action speaks louder than words, more tender than poetic lyrics, more clear than the sky's blue and his subtle acting style is deeper than the sea!

His iconic black-and-white films are a complex reflection on society, its vices, and its chaotic antics! His films are renowned for their exquisite romance, nuanced remarks about interpersonal relationships, and subtle and compassionate compliments to human life.

His characters have a fervor, an inexplicable desire to share something that no one discusses to this day!

His desire to see everyone content and at peace drove him to put in a lot of effort to create such classic films, and Mera Naam Joker is equivalent to an elaborate essay on human life. Jis Desh Me Ganga Behati Hai is a moral lesson for frail humanity.

In his film Teesri Kasam, he eloquentlsmiley9y conveyed his innocence, his desire for a dancing lady, and, in a sense, his moral and ethical convictions. But in the end, he is a bewildered man who has gone back to his original path by letting his want and longing for her, that lead her to a different place!

How can a profound admiration be condensed into a simple post? He is my hero, and I love him for understanding the human trajectories and the consequential tragedies!

Here is a wonderful tribute paid by BBC ---

Thanks for weighing in, Madhu. I know JDMGBH and Mera Naam Joker & also Teesri Kasam are his most acclaimed films. But somehow I have always gravitated to his less serious movies.. Chori chori being topmost among them.

Have you watched this movie called 'Dil ki rani'? It's among his earlier works opposite Madhubala. He's hilarious in that one! Keeps calling Madhubala his 'Chitchor' and she calls him 'Kaviraj'. smiley37 It's OTT dramatic. So fun. He even sings a song in that one. Let me see if I can find it.

Personally, I havent watched much of his films...but film Awaara is one of my favourite of Raj Ji ... such a perfect blend of romance and drama... smiley27

A true legend in every sense

Thanks for tagging me Lizzie

Thanks for chiming in, Anushka. Awara is one of his biggest hits. Did you know the song 'Awara Hoon' had become viral in Russia? He was a huge star there, they even travelled to Russia (he and Nargis) and were given red carpet treatment everywhere.

'Dum bhar jo udhar mooh phere' is THE perfect example of how chemistry between actors can translate into something so sizzling you almost feel like you can reach out and touch it. And they do this with nothing but looks.

The chemistry between Raj Kapoor and Nargis in Awara is simply magical.

Absolutely right. Loved that song too!

It’s incredible how timeless their performances still feel...as they say Old is Gold 💕
