Some People who actually tend to prattle condescendingly about Sonu sir while comparing him with Rafi overlook how much he extols rafi- almost to the point of canonization!

Absolutely he has quaffed down the subtle nuances of rafi ji like noone else!

Being a slightly bigger fan of kishor kumar sir, i have to say rafi epitomizes impeccability 🙏

Rafi sounds just divine in this! And what lyrics by Majrooh! Wah wah! I used to overlook this song becos lbr this album is studded with gems. Little did I realize the asli diamond lay beneath the other gems!

Aanewale ko aana hoga (duet with Lata Mangeshkar)

Film: Sohni Mahiwal (1958)

Music: Naushad

Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni

https://youtu.be/mLDw7Alf2og?si=sJIspO_j0AMhnBf1

How did I not post a single Naushad song yet? smiley5

I guess cos I was focusing on the rarer Rafi tracks and most of Rafi-Naushad songs are pretty popular. I think this one isn’t. Another really nice duet with Lata where you can see how well their voices blend. The picturization is so weird though smiley36

Baad muddat ke ye ghadi aayi (duet with Suman Kalyanpur)

Film: Jahan Ara (1964)

Music: Madan Mohan

Lyrics: Rajinder Krishen

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHsB1PnDGRM

The songs from this movie are all beautiful but the voice of the ML is Talat Mehmood in most of them except this duet and another Rafi solo which is also beautiful - Kisi ki yaad mein duniya ko hai... I'm posting this one because Suman K and Rafi both seem to complement each other so well! I think Rafi had that chemistry with most of his female co-singers. He seemed to have the knack of picking up on their cues and adjusting to their requirements.

The intro notes Rafi sings... wow, so good! smiley42

Dil khush hai aaj unse (1964)

Film: Gazal

Music: Madan Mohan

Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRo2otKMPRA

Jeez, what's with all the singing while swimming? smiley39

Anyways, looks like MM day for me today, this is another from his baton. Although the other songs in this movie, namely, Rang aur noor are more famous, I decided to post this one. Rafi brings a definite romantic flavour to this rather complicated tune by MM. Lovely!

# 35 Rafi Centenary Countdown

We're in December, Folks! Rafi's birth month!

Hazaron rang badlega zamana

Film: Shirin Farhad (1956)

Music: S. Mohinder

Lyrics: Tanvir Naqvi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SpsXSYs1EM

I hadn't heard this song until quite recently. I was stuck on Guzra hua zamana from this movie and then Sunaoon kisko afsana. The opening refrain hits you immediately with the pitch Rafi takes. I think a lot of MDs became aware of his incredible range early on (esp after O duniya ke rakhwale), and utilized it to the fullest. He's one singer I know that can attempt those crazy high notes and still not sound screechy or off tune. I don't know much about S. Mohinder, I think he's done only a handful of films. This is a great song though.

Tum ek baar mohabbat ka imtihan toh lo

Film: Babar (1960)

Music: Roshan

Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npcB6NooMpk

Rafi-Sahir-Roshan. Such a great combo. Nothing to say about this song- except, please listen. It's a master class in delivery. The actress is Azra. Not sure who the actor is. Definitely not Jagirdar who's the first billed! He must be Babar and this guy writing the letter is Humayun (my guess is he's Sohan Kapila but tbc). Azra plays Hamida Bano - his love interest.

ETA: A YT video identified the guy as Gajanan Jagirdar - very different from the Jagirdar _the character actor - I was thinking of!

Aankhon pe bharosa mat kar (duet with Sudha Malhotra)

Film: Detective (1958)

Music: Mukul Roy

Lyrics: Shailendra

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0LyW7yDcY4

Cute song! Mukul Roy was Geeta Dutt nee Roy's brother. He hasn't done many Hindi films but this one had great music (Remember Mujhko tum jo mile?)! Rafi infuses the right masti into this one!

Kahan ja raha hai

Film: Seema (1955)

Music: Shankar- Jaikishen

Lyrics: Shailendra

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nlf1Lacjkrw

I was just listening to this in my car so had to post. Rafi's voice in this gives my goosebumps. Especially when he sings... diya toh jala le... It was truly a divine gift he had, he makes you feel every emotion right to your soul.

Dekhta chala gaya main (duet with Lata Mangeshkar)

Film: Gateway of India (1957)

Music: Madan Mohan

Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M85F-C6EUMc

I've said this before - I absolutely love how wacky this song is! The picturization, the lyrics and the tune! And Rafi and Lata more than match up to the zaniness with their voices. Madhubala and Johnny Walker have such great chemistry in this! Just listen to how Rafi takes off when Johnny leaves off... it's magic. You can't tell it's two people. Johnny speaks and Rafi takes over singing. Amazing!
