# 26 Rafi Centenary Countdown

Mujhe dard-e-dil ka pata na tha

Film: Akashdeep (1965)

Music: Chitragupt

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyweCyAbCCM

Ahhh such a soulful song, and soulfully rendered! Somehow Chitragupt's best seems to be reserved for Rafi - though I absolutely love Dil ka diya from the same movie, but this one is amazing too. Just the way Rafi sings.. 'pata na tha' differently the second time! Uff!

Lizzie, here is great news for all the Rafi fans...

During a session titled “Aasmaan Se Aaya Farishta – Mohammad Rafi – The King of Melody”, Shahid shared exciting updates. He said, “The announcement will be made in December. I am making a biopic on Rafi sahab… It is going to be the life story of Rafi sahab. Songs will also be part of the biopic.” He added, “We have made a contract with Umesh Shukla, director of OMG – Oh My God! and 102 Not Out. It will be a full-fledged feature film.”

Thanks for sharing the news, Madhu. I always have mixed feelings about biopics because rarely do they render a life story accurately. If they include songs from yesteryears - that will be something to look forward to at least.

When you mentioned it, Madhu, I had to go digging for this session: 'Aasmaan se aaya farishta', an event in Rafi's honor organized by IFFI. I can listen to Sonu Nigam talk and explain and dissect Rafi's songs for HOURS! He just nails it - the way he analyzes each song and how Rafi sang it, his tonal inflections and how it would sound different if sung flatly. He is truly a joy to listen to. He should make a series just analyzing Retro songs! smiley4 I'm sure it will be a huge hit.

#27 Rafi Centenary Countdown

Ke gham ki raat kate

Film: Mera qasoor kya hai (1964)

Music: Chitragupt

Lyrics: Rajinder Krishen

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEwDZnykHrU

Another example of Chitragupt's best being with Rafi. The sorrow seems to be injected in his veins and dripping from Rafi's voice. Apparently, when Rafi first heard the song, he found it too stark and dark and requested the lyricist, Rajinder Krishen to modify the lyrics. But the lyricist stood firm and maintained that it suited the situation the protagonist was in in the film. Then it so happened that just before recording Rafi heard the news of the passing of his good friend back home. So I guess he was really feeling the lyrics when he sang this.

Aaj ki raat badi shokh, badi natkhat hai

Film: Nai umar ki nayi fasal (1965)

Music: Roshan

Lyrics: Neeraj

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qH5EA-CONP8

Sigh. This song. Such a lovely tune by Roshan and the use of instruments is minimal so Rafi's voice soars above it and shines! The lyrics are allowed to shine - as they should be. There is a version by Asha Bhosle, rather a duet I think, the video has both versions. I like the solo Rafi one better. The hero is Rajeev (idk who he is, probably a one film wonder since this film tanked badly at the BO)

I like the way you put it, but Sonu also comes across as someone who has not just studied Rafi saab's craft but has injected it into his veins. He absolutely knows what he's talking about when he talks Rafi saab. Which is why I'm holding out for a series from him - just talking about Rafi saab's technique. I would watch the heck out of it!

Abhi toh raat baki hai

Film: Bandish (1969)

Music: Usha Khanna

Lyrics: Akmal Hyderabadi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C974ifrVxDg

This is such a great song by Usha Khanna! She was such an under-rated composer but she was just 17 when she got composed music for Dil deke dekho and as the sole female in a male-dominated industry she must have found it an uphill battle. She mostly ended up composing music for B-grade films (again possibly the doing of the people in power who were of course men!). But look at her talent! It could not stay subdued. Even in these dud films, her music shone! And with a beacon like Rafi saab being her constant companion, how could she fail to get noticed? The actor is someone called Pradyuman Randhawa - someone said he's Dara Singh's son but I need to confirm.

I heard this song on a program on Usha Khanna and Rafi songs and then heard Sonu Nigam explain it. Too much of a coincidence to not post it!

#30 Rafi Centenary Countdown

Tere pyar ne mujhe gham diya

Film: Chhaila Babu

Music: Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics: Asad Bhopali

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30ehsOIMSMg

Another song that Sonu Nigam has analyzed at the event, so I thought I'd post it in his honor smiley4.

Again Rafi elevates what's a run-of-the-mill composition by LP to something extraordinary. His voice is like a weapon or rather a healing tool. Use it and anything gets uplifted! smiley4 MDs must have known this so used him when they needed to fi their songs! smiley36

The actor is Subbiraj who we saw in many TV shows in later years.
