I have been tracking US box office and as a general rule of thumb we multiply the movie budget with 2.5 to get an estimate of how much a movie needs to make, to breakeven. Does the 2.5X the budget rule hold true for bollywood or indian movies?

Yes 2.5x is a good enough mark to be a hit, but everyone in India is a sellout.. whether its awards or box office verdicts announced by trade pundits. Even budgets are faked.
The fake hits never stand the test of time though. Look at My Name Is Khan for example.. a manufactured hit, swept all the awards that year. No one talks about that movie after all these years.
I (still) talk about the movie

me too. I remember the theatre was full when I watched the movie. It was a good movie. Love the songs.Originally posted by: Clochette

Depends on the producer and PR. Karan will make insta posts declaring a movie hit even if it makes less than the budget.
Something tells me that he will change his attitude (not today, not tomorrow, but in the near future)... maybe now, he is more inclined to listen to some advices...

You talk about the US boxoffice...does the 2.5 'rule' only consider the US collections or the worldwide ones and is it the gross or nett collection?

Karan's Dharma was in trouble when their big ticket films underperformed massively.
It started with KANK. That film tanked. It made huge losses. It was a flop.
Fox studios made a huge loss with MNIK.IT was not even a hit.
Karan and SRK's PR had dressed it as some big hits.
Ra One produced by Red Chillies was a big flop, struggled to even recover it's budget.
Taran,Komal and many business analysts have reaffirmed it.
