It is not about the meaning of the name, it is about choice and personal agency.

Even if Pratima was the best name in the world, why would she change to it?

How can some ask to changing your name and identity. Which is why a lot of women are choosing not to change their surname now a days , after marriage.

Also Abhira name is given by her mom, why she will change it .

Pratima’s meaning could be statue but in my part of India it is always invariably used with reference to a statue of a Goddess. And everyone holds those with highest of regard. In that sense it is nothing to ridicule about. But “Pratima” as a name could be found in movies/stories based in 1960s or 1970s. Not sure how many girls are given that name these days.

I agree Pratima in eastern part of India is image of goddess .. someone who is worshipped .

I guess now people have equated it with idols of normal folks also .
