Amma's beatific smile and her eyes closed in devotion and bliss, turned heavenwards, dressed in a rich Kanjeevaram, her trademark bindi adorning her forehead, the gajra of jasmine flowers adorning her grey hair. I can't remember a single song she sang, but I can remember the respectful silence of the audience, heads swaying in rapt attention, and then the aahs and oohs of appreciation and the applause after she finished a song.

Some memories are stronger than the experience itself. Nothing spells nostalgia like this.

What are your most memorable live concerts?

I have never had the luck of attending any live concert....smiley24

The only concerts I have attended before were the ones I performed in because I learnt Classical music for a brief period.....I hope someday I can attend one....but right now its not possible

Kishore Kumar concert. It was beautiful funny energetic as Kishore Kumar himself was and melodies of that time...well that particular concert turned out to be memorable for many reasons. One Kishore Kumar my fav and seeing him live performance was thrilling. Other points can't tell but it was wonderful

Lata mangeshkar concert and special appearance by Rajesh khanna another of my fav . He danced in his style to chupp gaye saare nazare oh kya baat ho gayi. Aaye haaye from far off seeing Rajesh khanna was still a dream but dekha toh sahi

Then there were more where in fact all the great singers of those era r no more but new singers performed to their song. It was almost equal to going back down the memory lane.

So that's my story

Wow wow! You attended Kishore and Lata’s live concerts? That must have been a surreal experience. You can talk about the concert itself, what songs they sang, how the audience reacted and what they spoke etc. Leave out personal details if you wish to .. but everything else in a public concert we can talk about.

Would love to hear about the new singers who sang songs from the Classic era.

Sounds amazing! And I'm so jealous you got to see them live!

Must have been incredible. And I know concerts those days were very understated. It was more about the music and less about the crowd pleasing stunts / gizmos/ sets etc. Rafi is my eternal favorite.

I haven't attended many...barely 2-3 I guess. But I distinctly remember Jubin Nautiyal's one...it was just before COVID was coming into news.
It was my final year in UG and by that time I wasn't in connect with many of my friends in the class so I was in full mood to skip it lmao but one of my friends took me forcefully and I am SO grateful to her. It has always been a VERY bittersweet memory - because that was one time I felt alone in the middle of a VERY LARGE CROWD.
Literally everyone around me had people who they were busy with and even my friend was there with her ex (then boyfriend lol).

I was extremely psyched about Jubin's performances, specially when he was singing slow bollywood songs but at the same time it was very lonely. I will always remember the experience as bittersweet. That was my last college fest from graduation before Covid struck.

That sounds like a memory to keep. The bittersweetness just adds to it, doesn't it? It's strange when things happen a long time ago and you can't remember much of the event itself but you can remember how you were feeling.

So I actually attended a live performance by a local band today called Rock the Nation and they were really awesome (though the music could have been a little less loud, it was drowning out the vocals!)

They played a tribute to the History of Canadian music and showcased the evolution from the 50s to the present times. I did not attend the 90s onwards set, but Set 1 was wonderful, the band was so interactive and so were the audience (who mostly consisted of older people, but they were great!)

Some of the songs they sang:

1. Diana - Paul Anka

2. Sugar Sugar - The Archies

3. Safety Dance - Men without hats (the accompanying dance was soooo cute!)

4. Keep on rockin' in a free world - Neil Young

5. Sweet city woman - The Stampeders (such a good song!)

6. Big Yellow Taxi - Joni Mitchell (the vocalist nailed the end part)

7. If you could read my mind - Gordon Lightfoot ( another great rendition of a phenomenal song)

8. Sunglasses at night - Corey Hart

9. Summer of '69 - Bryan Adams

10. Takin' care of business - Bachman Turner Overdrive

11. American woman - The Guess Who

12. Born to be wild - Steppenwolf

13. Snowbird - Anne Murray

and the piece de resistance

14. Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen (Every single person had goosebumps, some teared up and the vocalist got a standing ovation)

I've resolved to go to more smaller performances and support local talent. They are more intimate and so much more fun than the big gigs!
