!We tend to believe that generally people have life stories! But some songs break the myth and have better stories than people's life.

Unchained Melody is one such song from 1955..... Originally made for the prison film Unchained and sung by Todd Dunken...... In 1965, the Righteous Brothers recorded the song again....... It was recorded on the B side track with a not so popular songsmiley13......

But miracle happened.......it went on to become the most recorded song of the 20th Century with over 1500 recordings by 670 artists. The Righetous Brothers version, a solo by Bobby Hatfield, achieved great popularity in 1990 film Ghost. The depth of the music gave the best haunting experience for the film's mood. After this film, the song took 27th rank on 100 years 100 Songs record by AFI.

Oh, my love, my darling

I've hungered for your touch

A long, lonely time

And time goes by so slowly

And time can do so much

Are you still mine?

I need your love

I need your love

God speed your love to me!

Lonely rivers flow

To the sea, to the sea

To the open arms of the sea

Lonely rivers sigh "Wait for me, wait for me"

I'll be coming home, wait for me!

I need your love I need your love God sp

The song is titled unchained but the specific word Unchained was never included in lyrics though film makers insisted that originally..........

Then there is another 1964 song where the popularity of the song was exploited to change the 1990 film title and make it attractive.... The blockbuster "Pretty Woman"

This same scene of the song deciding the film title happened in one regional film in Marathi..... Amar Bhoopali, 1951 V Shantaram Film....... The film was supposed to be titled Honaji Bala, a marathi poet born in 18th century. After listening to the song composition, a raga in Kalyaan, it was immediately known that this song would become immortal hence the name Amar Bhoopali ( Morning Song)

Even today, every temple including Shirdi Temple of Sai Baba opens with this Bhoopali.

every shala la la, every woah oh oh... still shines..

When they get to the part

Where he's breakin' her heart

It can really make me cry

Just like before

It's yesterday once more.

And the Roman Holiday VM with this song hits very different. Thanks for sharing.

PS: I love that movie and Audrey and Gregory are a dream together! smiley42

Lizzie, I genuinely wonder ......What happens to great singers?......

Caren Carpenter.....After having such a wonderful voice...... So very melodic, tuneful and distinctive...... To be a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and then to die at 33 years of age?smiley19....... perhaps those who are loved by people are also loved by God.

I have a shrine in my heart for our very own Indian........ KK, a great singer who also died early. His songs tug your heart's cords.......

Tadap Tadap ke Iss dil se aah nikalati rahi..... the guy poured his soul into that one song..... Even today, use earphones and listen to the song..... tears spring up naturally in your eyes when he sings

Agar mile toh khuda toh Poochoonga Khudaya

Jism mujhe deke mitti ka sheeshe ka dil kyun banaya

Aur phir diya ye fitrat ki veh karata hai Muhobbat

Vah re vah teri kudarat

Vah re vah teri kudarat

Kabhi hai milan kabhi furkat

But since this topic is about hidden gems, I am putting here one of his earliest album song, Pal

Hum rahe na rahe kal , yaad aayenge yeh pal..... pyaar ke pal

Thanks for the write-up on Unchained Melody and Pretty woman, Neha. Both classics!

And Ghanshyam Sundara Shreedhara in Bhoop is so iconic. Have been hearing this song since childhood playing early morning on the radio.

KK's death was indeed very unfortunate. He was an amazing singer.

I go back a few decades to recall another iconic singer and my personal favorite- Mohammad Rafi. Died at only 55! What more musical treasures would we have been blessed with had he lived longer?

Karen Carpenter - gone too soon! smiley19

Yet another musical legend- John Lennon - shot dead at 40. Would there have been a Beatles reunion if he had been alive longer? Maybe. We'll never know.

This song appears in the very first episode of House M.D. accompanied with a quote by House: "Like the philosopher Jagger once said: You can't always get what you want" smiley36.

Now Hugh has always been a fabulous musician - he would come up with these musical pieces on A Bit of Fry & Laurie and would be found singing and playing the piano on Jeeves and Wooster as well (this man is a bundle of talent!). And he found that many of his castmates on House were also good musicians, so they formed a fun band on set called the Band from TV. This is one of their efforts. Such a fun cover of the Rolling Stones' You can't always get what you want, an upbeat, almost bop version of the original. It spins a totally different mood and I love it (at times I think more than the original!)

Who in this world not A Rafi Fan?smiley2 Din nahi gujarata ki Rafi Saab ka koi na koi gaana na suna ho. Rafi is immortal.

My every morning ritual is his Marathi Song

Shodhishi Maanava Raauli Mandiri

Naandato Dev ha aapulya antari.

So pure must have been his heart that he chose this Song for Marathi singing. Only when the heart is that very pure, the voice is made golden by the universe. My go to song of his is

Main jindagi ka sath nibhata chala gaya

Omg. Did not expect to find another House fan here. Plus someone who remembers this song and knows of the original! smiley31

You are a hidden gem too, Neha! smiley27

Since we're on the topic of House, here's another song I first heard by a lesser known artist on the House soundtrack and fell in love with his vocals and his brand of music. So under-rated!

This entire album by Alexi Murdoch is a GEM! But this song. Gorgeous, breathtakingly gorgeous! smiley19

My salvation lies in your love... smiley38
