Chapter 4

Hi guys, Have updated the next chapter. Do let me know your honest feedbacks.

A pleasant scent wafted in the air. It felt quite familiar. Angad rose from his bed as if in a trance, he felt irresistibly drawn to it. He followed the sweet smell out of his room and soon stood in front of a long white corridor. As the scent grew stronger, Angad headed towards it and entered the passage. It was white ...white all around.

He followed it through a white corridor, which seemed endless. He walked and walked and walked, his legs almost gave up, when he saw a small door at the end of the passage. His weak legs suddenly regained all its vigour,....for he had seen a light , a hope of finding an end to what seemed like a loop.

He ran...he ran as fast as his legs would carry him, and finally he reached the little door. It was unusually small, it could barely fit a 6-foot-tall Sardar. Angad bent down and stepped through.

He stepped out to what seemed like a meadow sheathed by a cloudy sky. Angad looked up, the sun was barely visible. A bemused Angad looked around. It was familar yet unfamiliar. ..it rem...the scent..the scent..he could smell it again, stronger this time...very close...Angad looked straight ahead ..and there it was, standing tall...and beautiful...his orange tree in full bloom; adorned with pure white specks. Angad's heart brimmed with joy...he ran towards it..but stopped abruptly.

Was that a woman? Yes, under the orange tree stood a woman, her back turned to him. She had a delicate figure, her thick locks of hair fell to her curvaceous waist...Angad could feel his heart beating against his chest...he stepped closer...she was petite...but oh-so-elegant...

"Taaaraaa?" Angad called out , a mixture of emotions playing their tunes in his heart and mind.

"Yes..yes...she is my..."overwhelmed with emotions, he sank to the ground and wept.

"I knew it..I knew all this was just a nightmare...How could Tara leave her Angad behind..." a choked laugh escaped through his tears.

He suddenly wiped his tears and stood up. Rushing to her, he hugged her from behind. "What if she left him?" Angad thought, clasping her tightly.

His gentle touch lingered on her arms, and gazed at it intensely. He spoke softly, "A jeweller would love these slender wrists. I'd make bangles with little flowers representing your orange blossoms...

His fingers then moved up tucking away a strand of hair that covered her ears and whispered "I'd then make an ear cuff...a delicate climber adorned with leaves and blossoms to outline your delicate....he trailed off as his hands moved upwards towards her neck.

His fingers trembled with excitement as it slowly traced the curves of her slender neck. He moved the hair that covered it and placed a tender kiss. "And for this swan-like neck, I'd make a thin chain..no..not the thick ones...just a delicate but strong chain...just the one that will let my hands roam freely" he chuckled.

His gaze drifted upwards, looking at the back of her face,"Your face...I would leave it bare...those light hazel eyes are the only ornaments it needs" he said longingly. "It seems like an enternity since I-I ssaw t-them..my heart..my heart yearns to see them" his voice quivered, his eyes glistened with tears..

"Let me see them, Tara," he pleaded. "Let my aching heart get some solace...I can't bear the pain no longer" Angad shut his eyes and wept.

The woman turned to face Angad, and cupped his face

" The fallen blossom is for the Autumn to take,

A new blossom shall fall on the heart that aches,"

Tara's voice felt like a balm, but her words seemed to tense his soul. Despite this, a surge of anticipation welled up within him, and he raised his gaze, eager to meet the familiar hazel depths of her eyes.

But...but

It was amber. ...no not hazel. A captivating pair of amber eyes stared back. They were angelic. The depths of those eyes held love, pure love that mirrored his own. Angad saw himself in that amber pair, his heart felt at ease, he felt at home...He slowly bent forward towards....

"ANGAD..ANGAD ...WAKE UP!!!" Garry shouted in excitement.

Angad woke up with a start, perspiring. "That...that wasn't Tara...no ..that wasn't ..." thoughts darted across his mind. "Angad, ...are you awake?"

"But I can't remember her face...did he even see the face...but..those eyes...amber eyes...WHY?? why? Now was he not to see even a glimpse of his Tara in his dreams...

"Angad, you duffer"...

" Has God forsaken him? He is taking every little thing that remined of Tara ...his orange trees hasnt blossomed yet...the gift she gave him broke last year..and now he can't even..." Angad wanted to yell and question this unfairness to Babaji.

PATAAK!!!

"Owwwww" Angad cried angrilly "What is it, ch**tiye!"

" Oyyy g**ndu, look outside"

"Outside?"

" Angad, my pra, your orange blossoms have bloooomedd!!!"

"What?" Angad couldnt believe what he heard. It sounded like music...like joy. Something that he hadn't experienced for two years now.

He jumped out of the bed and ran to window, Garry behind him. The sight he saw was beautiful...a blessing..

Angad's voice choked as he said "It looks like a piece of heaven, doesn't it?, he said tears cascading down his cheeks.

Garry placed a comforting hand on Angad's shoulder. "Maybe someone up there is watching over you, Angad. Rewarding your strength for overcoming your vices and facing your pain head-on. Want to go take a closer look?" he asked gently.

A newfound serenity settled over Angad. "Yes, brother," he replied with a voice filled with gratitude and peace.

CHAPTER 5

"Seerat di...gudgudu ho rahi hein"

"Ohoo...Sahiba right now? You've got to reach Ludhiana in an hour...Go run!"

"You should have done all this before na, Sahiba?"

" Mein kya karoon? Aapko pata hein na, jab bhi mein tensed hoti hoon....uhm.."

" Are you going to stutter and stammer in front of me...I know your bowel acts like a washing machine whenever you're on tenterhooks!"

"Hehe..."

"Sahiba!! Stop "hhehying and run off to the washroom, girl!!"

" Okay, lady!! Gosh! My future jiju is going to have a hard time with you aroooundd" retorted an anxious Sahiba as she ran off to the washroom.

Seerat slightly blushed in response and dialed a number. As the line was picked up,

"Garry, listen Sahiba might be a few minutes late...Can you please manage?" and Seerat explained the entire story.

" Hhahaha...Your sister's quite a piece Seerat..hahaha..."

"Garrry!!!" Seerat called out in a warning tone.

"Oh ..ahmm sorry..hehe." said a flustered Garry trying to avoid a fight "Chillax Seeruu....She can take her time...I can stall Darji, Mummy and Inder Mama for sometime...Your little sister is lucky..Angad is not going to attend the interview...he would have been furious, had she been even a minute late...coz he'd be there 30 minutes prior to the said time...hes one crazy guy..."

"Oh is it? Sheesh...Sahiba is indeed lucky...okay I'll hang up then.."

"Without a kisshi?" asked Garry pouting

" Oho Garry...You are one...oh no Garry Sahiba's back....."

"Oh NO!..give a quick ki..." and the line was hung up.

"All set ?" asked Seerat to Sahiba

"Yes, di. Okay then let me take your leave then!....Kulcheee START THE AUTO..." Sahiba called out as she ran outside

"Ugh!! Sahiba..my ears!!! Keep it down..."

"BYE..BYEE SEERAT DIIII...WISH ME LUCK...." waving, Sahiba called out as she sped off in Kulche's auto.

"So, much for "keeping the volume down"!!" sighed Seerat as she waved back.

After a tumultous autoriskshaw ride in the scorching heat of Ludhiana, Sahiba finally reached the Brar Mansion.

" Woaaah, is this a mansion or a palace!!" Sahiba exclaimed in utter disbelief

" Haaa..didiiiii...are you sure the address is right...yeh parliament though nahi hein?"

" I hope you are joking, Kulche...if not I'll come to your house in the evening, aur tujhe do chamaat maroongi...your GK is 0, you better focus on your studies Kulche! Teekhe ..teekhe I am running out of time...off you go .." saying so Sahiba walked inside.

She then cleared the security check and was soon greeted by Garry.

"Sahiba..!! Such a pleasure meeting you again..remember me?"

" Garry??! Seerat Di's favorite senior friend in college? Of course I remember you...this is such a pleasant surprise..but you..here?"

" Here? Where else would I be? You are speaking to one of the board members of Brar Jewellers... this my family business...more like my mom's side...so enough of me...Let me get to you Sahiba, the sample designs, you'd done for the assignments were mind blowing...everyone , including my brother who rarely gets impressed...loved it...!"

" Thank you...but arent we getting late for the interview now?"

"Oh yaa..so Sahiba ...you will have to wait for another half an hour...my Daarji needs some time to get ready...extremely sorry for the inconvenience...will that be okay?"

" Thats not a problem..sure I can wait"

Garry then directed Sahiba to the lobby and went off to observe the proceedings. Although Sahiba accepted the delay outwardly, she was inwardly unsettled. Another 30-minute...meant another 30 minutes of tension, and she dreaded having another gudgudu moment, especially not in the Brar Mansion.

Sahiba then tried to distract herself. She looked around..and marvelled at the interiors, the classy architecture of the mansion, the huge French windows opposite her, and ...woww.... Was that an orange tree.... an orange tree embellished with a cascade of the purest white blossoms?

Sahiba ran, drawn by an irresistable force and pressed her nose to the window. Yes, it was an orange tree broken into bloom. Orange blossoms held a special place in her heart. The white blossoms reminded her of hope and purity. The sweet perfume of those flowers reminded her of peaceful meadows. Sahiba never knew why. She didnt know why , despite being her favorite flower, why she could resist a rose, but not a few orange blossoms. This was an enigma both for Sahiba and the narrator. However, unlike the latter, Sahiba always tried to convince herself, that it was probably the rarity of these flowers which captivated her. However, the narrator is still not convinced.

Sahiba looked around and then at the clock. She was all alone in the lobby. She still had another 25 minutes left for the interview. A strong temptation started brewing inside her. Who would know if she quickly picked a few blossoms..the daredevil in her was slowly poking its head out. She rushed outside.

"Ugh the blazing sun is going to be the end of me" Sahiba muttered, annoyed. She ran back inside and pulled out a pair of shades from her tote bag, wore it and dashed back outside, like a mischevious child. The orange tree's magnetic pull was such.

A few rooms away, Angad sat on his armchair next to the window. He was ecstatic, the feeling felt so novel to him, yet there was something disturbing him....that dream.

But it's just a dream, he reminded himself...yes..a dream..but those amber eyes...it didnt belong to Tara...ohooo...

its a dream...

probably those were light hazel...extremely light hazel...

no you very well know...it was an amber shade...

it's a dreamm...come on..

and I...I bent forward..I was lost in someone else's eyes..was I about to ki...no...no I can't..." the happiness soon escalated to anxiety..to self-doubt...disgust...revulsion..

"IT'S A DREAM! IT'S A DREAM! IT'S A F#&KING DREE....." Angad's eyes noticed something, beyond the window...it darted to that direction...his eyes bloodshot, his dark pupils grew darker...his blood started boiling...

"Aeyy...ayyyy" Angad screamed and ran downstairs

As she approached the orange tree, Sahiba's joy bubbled up within her, like that of a child. With skips and jumps, she made her way to the tree. It was as though the Tree itself was beckoning her...Her hands shot up to pluck one of the blossoms, but stopped midway..."NO, that's not needed " she thought and bent down to pick up the fallen blossoms...like the spring reviving a withered tree, giving it a new lease of life. Bringing one blossom close to her nose, she took a deep breath to take in the sweet fragrance.

"Hey you!!"

Sahiba was jolted back to reality. A man in a loose turban and a worn pair of traditional pajamas loomed over her. She struggled to get a good view, as her shades majorly obstructed it. Yet, Sahiba couldn't look away, she was transfixed...as though she knew the voice. Who was this man with a thunderous voice that was soothing at the same time. It felt like a balm that touched the bruises of her past. It did sting a bit, yet it did a sense of tranquility her.

" What the...excuse meee, lady" Angad brought her back to reality again

"u-huh" Sahiba glanced around and pointed a finger at herself, as if seeking confirmation from Angad that he was indeed addressing her.

"Yes, your highness, YOU!"

Sahiba stared back in shock. What rudeness, she thought.

"Why ? Why are you picking up these orange blossoms... do you even know how many years of hardwork it took to bring them to this state? I had to give it all sorts of fertilizers and nurture it..." rebuked Angad.

"Ohoooo, he's the gardener here. But look at him, speaking as though he owns this property," Sahiba thought to herself.

"Hey you...listen up ma'am... I am tellin..."

"Why can't gardeners stick to their business and not boss people..." One thing that Sahiba hated the most was bossy and rude people. She sprang up, adjusted her shades and looked at Angad...

"Oiii hello!! Know your limit Mister!" Sahiba retorted

To say Angad was shocked would be an understatement. One could see him puffing up like a baloon ready to burst out...

" How dare you...HOW DARE YOU?"

"HOW DARE YOU!!! How dare you take that tone with me ...." Sahiba interjected.

Angad's words got stuck in his throat. No one had dared to question Angad Singh Brar...and here's a puny woman questioning him.

" Do you even know who I am ...?" Angad asked more confused than angry "Plus why did you take these orange blossoms?"

" Who you are? hmmmm...As far as I recall, the President of India was Miss. Draupadi Murmure...Uhmm...and she definitely doesn't sport a beard?"

"What??" exclaimed Angad, wondering who let this crazy woman inside

" Haa, and you don't look like an angel too...oohh now I get who you are..."

"Finally!"

"Aankhein hein, baal hein, baaki sab organs hein...but I doubt the presence of a heart...so you are either a human or robot!?"

Angad was at a loss for words. He couldn't keep up with this sharp-tongued girl who had the most witty responses...

Girl, stop playing games and tell me why you took those flowers..." Angad muttered to himself, already tired of dealing with this troublesome girl so early in the morning.

" Why did I pick those blossoms? Come on!! Those are fallen blossoms mister...I havent plucked even one blossom off the branch...!!! "

"So? You are can't even take a grain of sand surrounding this tree!!! YOU GET IT?!"

" How about standing under the same sky as of your orange blossoms, your highness?" Sahiba mocked Angad , feigning fear.

" ENOUGH!!! Do not mock me or my tree?!!"

" I will"

" Whoever you are...I WILL THROW YOU OUT NOW!"

" Hahah...try me! Garry Baweja will throw you out instead...I am going to work as the assistant to the Chief Designer at Brar Jewellers,...

As Garry made his way to the lobby to inform Sahiba that her interview would commence in 10 minutes, he heard a loud commotion outside. Rushing to investigate, he found Sahiba and Angad engaged in a heated argument, catching just one crucial snippet:

"Let me see how a gardener like you can stop me from attending my interview..." Sahiba declared, adjusting her slipping shades with a hint of arrogance.

In that moment, both Angad and Garry stood dumbfounded and bewildered. "Gardener?" they both exclaimed simultaneously.

Startled, Sahiba turned to see Garry approaching. He rushed to her side.

" Sahibaa...this is not our Gardener...he is my brother...my brother Angad Singh Brar, the CEO!" Garry exclaimed fighting to hold back his laughter

Now it was Sahiba's turn to be taken aback. Angad Singh Brar... but how? He appeared much shorter in the photos and was impeccably dressed, with a smile on his face – this man doesnt look like he could move a facial muscle to smile.

If only Sahiba had removed her shades for a better look at Angad, she might have avoided this confusion, the narrator muses.

Sahiba looked from Garry to Angad and back to Garry. The shock on Angad's face slowly morphed into anger.

"See you at the interview...I will ensure you have a smooth interview process" he snarled and stormed off in a fit of anger even before an anxious Sahiba could even muster a sorry...She stood rooted to the spot, clutching the fallen blossoms...
