I watched Chamkila today and man, such an EXHILARATING watch it is!
Even after all the good reviews, I was wondering if it will live up to the hype but it had me gripped from the get go.
This is like watching a whole new Imtiaz with this movie....I don't remember any of his movies being this tightly edited and stylized in a long while now....don't know if the subject matter was such to pull such a film out of him but he really hit it out of the park in terms of execution.
I was toh so gripped with the beginning montage only and just watching in amazement how well the music and visuals flow together. All my wariness about the soundtrack was absolved while watching the movie....the songs are bang on with the way they've been used in the film. And Diljit's singing voice has all been utilized for Chamkila's actual songs so you get that whole flavor from there too.....the fact that Diljit's background also mirrors this in terms of being that folk singer who sang in villages while he was coming up really adds to the authenticity of that entire bit.
Parineeti's singing was kinda weak for her part but otherwise she did decent in her role and Amarjot-Chamkila's relationship was also nicely shown.
Chamkila toh bigamist nikla yaar.....lol and they didn't try to whitewash it in any way....saamne se dikhaya ki he did give dhoka knowingly. And all the times he tries to act his way out of tough situations but at the same time he's genuinely an almost naive and servile man in many ways.
The way they creatively translated all the Punjabi lyrics of the vulgar songs into Hindi with that text accompaniment and so much use of split screen I've never seen before in an Imtiaz film.
I also liked how they addressed the hypocrisy of society that so many people were on Chamkila's case for composing lewd songs but not a single person asked why his songs were so popular with the masses and no one questioned the masses for listening to his music....lol if his songs were really playing at all the weddings and parties, tab kahaan mar gayi thi censorship? Bas singer ko hi pakadne baithe the? lol
Woh Sumo ke Papa from EDKV2 was the cop investigating the Chamkila murder in this one and most of the story is told in FB through narration to him....lol
Diljit was just FAB.....he has taken it to another level as an actor with this one....hope he wins some award for this.
+100 to everything you said .
Marvelous Work from everyone involved but esp Imtiaz and Diljit the way they teleport us to that world right from the very first frame the execution when you are least expecting it to the montage you are there in that world holding your breath to have it unfold ..it doesn't take a min to get kto the main thing and then hold onto that till last frame that is a big win.. the way they have merged and transitioned to the real footage the real things the attention to details highlighted more in them it leaves you with your jaws dropped caz woahhhh the hard work just shines.chotu choti si cheez main they have gone for perfection. I was also 🫡😲 at the casting of all the supporting cast too when you see the real pictures and all it almost feels like a reincarnation of sorts hi..
I loved that unlike other biopics it is so matter of Fact and neutral even if it does raises the questions and highlights the double standards in such a crystal clear way yet manages to keep itself away from getting into the very direct slander and controversies..sab kuch bohat saaf hai about everything but yet so generic that one cannot object to it. Matlab in baaja itself it tells us the 2 sides of the coins and that is a constant throughout..apne gareeban main koi nahi jhankta and it is so easy to target someone else while being a society watchdog when you are very much the same as others as was shown with the character of that Police officer..closet fan toh tha hi but on surface nahi nahi kar raha tha..
Ashleelta thi given but again who was demanding for it who was buying the records who were the people demanding it at every event ..he never said he ain't saying bad stuff infact they have shown him pretty threatened and ready to mend his ways right away without any resistance at first too..but then again everything he was saying was what he saw all around so koi fiction se toh bana nahi raha tha sab stories and songs and that time period and abhi bhi mostly yehi fantasies yehi sab toh hota tha and hai in these villages. I liked the way that old lady accepted that hum bhi toh yehi sab insinuations and intentdos gaate hain in our functions in tappe and all..yeh sab toh normal hai but when it came to him getting success it became slander when ironically these women were very much taking pleasure out of his sexual writings and nasty songs..as shown in naram kaalja and otherwise the very women jinki izzat was threatened were enjoying it .. sochne ki baat toh hai and aaj bhi yehi hai..everybody has to find a source of.pleasure yeh 3rd class fantasies and shows and books aaj bhi aise hi toh nahi like kiye and padhe jaate..
Anyway I loved the performances diljit just dil moh leta hai that honesty in his presence only is enough but here toh he has totally became chamkila exceptional talent he is and he does such a mammoth performance so honest so simple so heart touching. The concerts were so much fun despite the objectionable content caz the tunes the music the singing just totally sticks with you and yoh start enjoying even though you di have the thought ke kya hai..and they have shown it multiple tim3s in the film too that people enjoyed the mahaul he used to create so much more like woh recording studio wala. GOSH I HAVE SO MUCH to say about so many things in it
I also lived how they have not done it chapter by chapter and overwhelmed us like that manikshaw jahan achi acting and perofmencae bhi feels like a chore and guaranteed totally different films but I mean hain tih bioocs hi na..I liked how they balanced the personal and professional lives of amarjot and chamkila it was never we have to get done with this chapter..hahah chamkila badi seedhe se chuoa bhi gaya apna sach but yeh bhi sach hai ke usne toh jhoot nahi bola everyone assumed it was the way and he managed to get his way out of it..and was so matter of fact about it too..
Man it really is haunting to see the last few min as it all comes together simply outstanding but also heart breaking to see the hippocrisy the materialistic nature of everything around ..basic human greed and lack of humanity.. the way the leech families comes to loot ..cannot even give them the dignity in their deaths. lack of respect the way even with deadbodies people more intrested in photoshoots and fickleness..nobody actually cared that such a tragedy happened..it was like suddenly they were no one no value nothing.. and ofcourse Vida Karo with the beautiful lyrics by Irshad and arijit singing it so beautifully. It hits different as you said..the way they were pretty much laawaaris hi in their last journey ..kisi ko real dukh nahi hua.nobody lost anything really.
That whole domestic angle was shown very nicely too and them lovestory was so sweet and simple. I eso want to applaud pari caz she finally gave a performance worth her caliber.. and more so caz she had to do more with mostly her expressions her eyes and body language dialogue part toh was very little for her..the tu kya jaane song made me smile..
Oh also liked how despite the success and such huge growth they have stayed rooted only and that is caz chamkila ka nature hi woh tha..it was really refreshing to see that and then ofcourse so many parallels with Rockstar itself Imtiaz seems to have sowrn to prove everyone wrong with this one.. 2oh jo kaam ka saaf intention hai na that came jumping out..
Love love love it......
