TV subscribers decrease in India, is TV losing faster to ott? Really?

Above sentence caught attention, so was trying to dwell more about what we as viewers think & assume smiley9 to what's actually happening in the country. Hence a separate post to discuss on this topic, have TV subscribers really come own in India significantly because of OTT rise?smiley14 Pls share your thoughts.


First thing First - Understanding audiences:


Television audiences are more settled and expect a daily dose of their appointment based content viewing, primarily woven around families,smiley1 or relatable characters, drama, emotions, fun, bonding and conflicts. Its a group that usually sits together, and watches TV shows than solos.smiley14 Whereas, OTT audiences are more evolved and expect more experimental and disruptive stories, characters and plots as these shows can be watched in solos from any device any time.


TV sets in India:


A news report published in 2021 says 210 mn Indian households own TV sets. 


According to the TV Universe Estimates (UEs), TV Homes in India increased by 6.9% to 210 million from previous 197 million in 2018. TV viewing individuals grew by 6.7%, effectively an increase of 56 million, since the last study was conducted. The report adds that the growth of ownership of TV sets in rural India took over urban India, with rural TV markets growing at 9% compared to 4% in the urban markets.


Now coming to TRAI chairman's recent talk in 2024, Lahoti dismissed the notion that mobile devices would render traditional TV obsolete. “Mobile is not replacing TV; it is augmenting TV and expanding the reach of TV. It is also expanding the viewing time,” Lahoti added. He pointed out the significant gap between smart TVs and traditional TV sets.  Can read full article below.

There is one more reference below that caught attention.


The number of television homes using DD FreeDish will increase from 45 million at present to around 50-60 million in the next four to five years, said Prasar Bharati CEO Gaurav Dwivedi asserting that there has been a consistent growth in the only free-to-air (FTA) DTH service in India. There are 150 channels available on FTA.


Free Dish has been growing continuously and consistently. While the other media is growing rapidly, set-top boxes are also here to stay and they are well entrenched at least for the foreseeable future.smiley3

So what's the problem?


Pay TV homes declined by 20 lakh, from 120 million in 2022 to 118 million in 2023, and saw a 9.2% drop since 2020 when the number stood at 130 million. The downward trend in Pay TV segment signals that the consumers are drifting to Connected TV and Free TV (FTA).


According to a report, Pay TV will see a downfall, and by 2026, the number of its subscriptions is likely to fall by 5 million. However, Free TV or DD FreeDish will gain audiences.
