THE DEATH OF A NAGAR - PART II

_______________________________

[ Butterfly effect

 noun [U]

 /ˈbʌtəflaɪ ɪfekt/

A theory of chaotic properties which proposes that small changes in initial conditions can lead to large-scale and unpredictable variations in the future state of events.

Can also be understood as : The tiny flaps of a butterfly's wings can make a tornado.]

In her previous life, Yuvika's meeting with her averred grandmother, Devyani singh had made her question the reality of her life.

Her grandfather, Shanti Prasad Mahajan had an affair with a young woman. She bore and took care of her father Premraj for 4 years, when he was snatched away from his mother's arms and was brought to the Mahajan mansion. Shobhana Mahajan took his further responsibility and raised him along with her children - until he left for Rishikesh twenty years ago.

Shobhana Mahajan : the one with whom she thought she had blood ties with, was her step grandmother.

(After meeting with Vidur Uncle, Yuvika had not forgotten to take a glance at the visitor's registry book - only to find her name. While people like Neil and Dada Babu were definitely expected to come and visit Vidur Uncle - but Shobhana Mahajan?

Yuvika had never seen the matriarch interact with the Bharadwajs before, let alone even mention their names. So for her to suddenly involve herself in this case, going as far as to even visit Vidur Uncle was surprising as well as... suspicious.)

With the locket, the love letters with the same distinct handwriting as her grandfather, and the photo frame of the three - Devyani Ji had proven it to Yuvika in her previous life itself, that she was speaking the truth.

Or at least, the words she spoke were believable and the evidence she presented were worth considering. However, she still couldn't bring it in herself to trust that woman yet.

But then again, she was the only visible piece of this decade long puzzle, so she might as well give it a try.

Hence when she got the cryptic message this time, she didn't get that anxious - neither did her mind rake with different assumptions of who it could be.

Still, she told Isha the same words as last time - that if she didn't return within 3 hours, then Isha would not hesitate in immediately tracing her location and finding her.

Her sister, clearly distressed and worried, demanded to know where she was going but Yuvika said nothing, instead assuring her that she would be fine and promising her to tell the details later.

With that, she left the mansion with a heavy breath, preparing herself for to hear the truth for the second time.

.

.

.

And now here she was, impatiently waiting for the sudden traffic to drop.

Yuvika had many questions in her mind regarding Devyani Ji in her previous life, but she had never gotten the chance to ask them before her death. But this time, she was prepared.

Hopefully this time around, she would finally get her answers.

Absentmindedly, Yuvika looked to her right.

Parallel to her car was Neil, her best friend and her ex - investigation partner. He was seated on his Hero Splendor, with a black helmet on as he looked forward at the source of the traffic with a pinched brow.

Her fingers drumming on the steering wheel stopped as his eyes landed on her. Black met brown. Anger met guilt. Resolve met resolve.

Neil stared at her without expression for a few seconds, before he rolled his eyes and looked away, done with the interaction. But Yuvika's gaze stayed stagnant, looking at him intently.

Amidst this entire fiasco, Neil was the one suffering the most.

First, his father was imprisoned years ago because of Dhanraj Tauji. Then, unable to accept the pain and humiliation, his mother killed herself, leaving him an orphan in this cruel world. And now years later, just when his wounds were beginning to heal, Vidur Uncle had accepted the crimes of a fellow Mahajan. Yet again.

When Yuvika had come to meet him this morning in pretext of giving him breakfast, she hadn't looked at his face. But now that she did, Yuvika could clearly see how exhausted he was. His face was tense and his hair was frazzled, the dark eye circles which made way under his eyes only indicated further that he hadn't been getting a good night's sleep.

Neil was struggling. Struggling to fight against her, against Vidur Uncle's statement, against the Mahajans, against himself.

Though he tried to hide it with his cold fury and sarcastic remarks, Yuvika understood how miserable, how pathetic, how useless he was feeling from the inside - even if he was anything but.

Yuvika clutched the steering wheel tighter as her stomach churned with an indescribable emotion - she vaguely recognised that it was guilt.

What was she doing?!

How could she leave him alone like that?

When Yuvika was new to the city, helpless and without a clue, it was Neil who had supported her.

It was Neil who was there with her in every step she took. Giving her advice. Motivating her when she got lost. Becoming her guiding light.

And now that the roles were reversed, wasn't it also her duty to do the same?

Yuvika couldn't watch him like this anymore. What use was of coming back in time if she couldn't even comfort Neil?

Her eyes flitted towards her handbag, before falling on Neil again.

If she were to show him the ring, she could alleviate all his worries, all his pain within seconds.

No doubt, he would get angry and ignore her at first - but she was sure he would understand. And then, they could investigate and ponder over this issue together.

Gathering up her courage, Yuvika immediately opened the door of her car with a soft click.

Neil continued to pretend to ignore her, looking straight ahead.

Yuvika didn't let that deter herself. Steeling her mind and clutching the open door of her car, she started speaking.

"Neil, please listen to me. I know you are angry but - there is something very important I need to tell you."

Neil, like the rude man he was, fished out his phone and started swiping and scrolling through a few apps, seemingly ignoring her - but his body language, and the way he shut his vehicle's engine off clearly indicated that he was listening.

Feeling emboldened by the gesture that she was being heard, Yuvika continued.

"That night of Vidur Uncle's arrest, I found-"

She didn't know why, but her eyes absentmindedly flickered to her left periphery.

"-something."

Yuvika's words got stuck in her throat as she froze, her eyes widening in horror.

What the-

Previous memories flashed through her eyes with the speed of a bullet train, as she looked at the scene in front of her.

This was the same truck that had hit her in her last life.

"Oh. My. God."

She kept a shaking palm on her mouth in fear, as goosebumps suddenly crawled all over her skin.

No. This was- this was not possible, she thought frantically and tried recalling all the events after Vidur uncle's arrest with increased desperation.

Neil had not yet confronted the Mahajans.

Arjun had not yet met with Simone. He hadn't even come home drunk yet.

The D&P locket was not yet in her hands and....

And Devyani Ji.

Her accident was supposed to happen the next day, after meeting Devyani Ji.

Then why, why was this truck in front of her today, when she had not even seen her face in this life yet?!

Suddenly it clicked in her head.

Yuvika was no fool. She was aware, she knew, she already realised what was happening, but she didn't want to accept it.

Her actions had caused a distortion in the timeline.

The appearance of the truck a day earlier was a.... butterfly effect.

That displacement in trajectory of her footsteps towards the alley instead of the parlor, that momentary change of decision was going to cost her her life.

No. No. No!

This was not supposed to happen so soon!

She thought she had more time.

"-Yuvika?"

Her horrified eyes flickered to a frowning Neil. He was waving his hand, trying to get her attention. His lips moved but she couldn't hear anything. She wasn't able to hear anything because her ears were ringing so, so loud. She couldn't listen, couldn't speak, couldn't think. She couldn't do anything as -

(If you could see the book of your destiny cruelly being rewritten in front of your very eyes, with darker ink and shorter pages, what would you do?

How would you react to death dancing right before your eyes, beckoning and inviting you to come closer, luring you to embrace its dark lullaby?

Would you accept your fate and sway to the new, macabre tune of death, or would you stop the music altogether, and demand your forsaken right to live?)

- as the tyres of the truck moved

Yuvika's entire body shuddered as she took a step back on instinct, her shaking hands leaving the door of the car.

Her frightened eyes still on the truck, she gulped harshly, taking another step back.

And another.

And another.

"-vika?!"

The next second, she turned around and ran.

She didn't know where or which direction she was going, she just wanted to escape.

She wanted to escape the truck, escape the voices whispering in her head, and as stupid as it sounds - escape her impending doom of death.

At some point, Yuvika tripped and fell on her knees. Least bothered, she took off her heels in frenzied movements before scrambling and picking up her pace again.

What should I do? Where should I hide?

Think Yuvika think!

justdosomethingbeforeyoudieonceagain-

She suddenly turned her feet to the left on the verge of the highway, sprinting in the direction of a big tree.

Yuvika quickly hid herself behind the huge trunk as she scrunched her eyes shut while panting heavily, adrenaline still hot under her heels.

Suddenly, everything was quiet. There seemed to be no chirping of birds, no whirring of vehicles on the highway. Time seemed to freeze and so did Yuvika's breath. For a moment, the only sound she could hear was the loud ringing in her ears and the heartbeat buzzing through her head.

Seconds later, the disturbingly familiar sound of two vehicles clashing violently with a loud 'CRASH' shattered away all the silence.

Clutching both of her ears with trembling hands, Yuvika let out a blood curdling scream.

Also, can I make a minor request? Please don't quote the entire chapter. It disbalances the post to page ratio. smiley1
