I honestly don’t get it. It isn’t even a Bilal thing because people have never tuned into any of his shows like this
Ishq Murshid is a fun frothy David Dhawan-Govinda romp. These films were loved by Pak audiences back in the day. We have so many iterations of this trope in BW over the years and it has been a successful formula almost always. Bawarchi with Rajesh Khanna, Hero #1 with Govinda, that one with Amol Palekar (naam nahi yaad), even a little bit of Maddy's RHTDM. The OG FB track reminds me of Johnny Lever tracks in 90s-00s BW comedies - uska apna hi scene chal raha hota tha, but the audiences used to love it. The poor guy with heart of gold who gets a girl above his station is another crowd-pleaser and someone audiences get invested in (like a Raja Hindustani). There is a little bit of Raja Hindustani reference in FB for sure. When FB wears the orange suit, it made me think of Raja Hindustani when Aamir (an uneducated small town taxi driver) dresses up in a garish suit to impress Karisma (an educated city girl from rich family). Add in Bilal's fantastic performance, Durre's beauty, the plethora of cute romantic filmi moments (they are filmy not ptv drama-esque), and you get yourself a blockbuster hit.
I think all ptv dramas getting good trps these days have something filmy to them. a little bit old bw. IM's filmi references I've talked of. The Beta influence in JeJ is very strong (also similar films of that time). APKDD is not out yet but the trailer gave me a mix of Sajan+HDCCS. BRKRJ the way it's shot is very filmy and the trailer had scenes with a very Ishqzaade vibe. I can write a whole post on these comparisons. But my point is that ptv audience these days seem very receptive to filmy stories, filmy moments, filmy romance. These elements tap into nostalgia or allow people escapism from grim reality, dunno what, but viewers seem to lap it up. A Yunhi on the other hand is very old school ptv which people seem less receptive to.
