In Ramanad Sagar (and Valmiki's Ramayan), Ravan didn't know about Ram, he heard about sita's beauty from Surpanakha and when he saw her, he realised he wanted her and surpnakha's motives took backseat, she wanted him to kill Sita but he fell in love

He didn't knew about Taadka and Subahu's death🤔

If I am not wrong that's how he convinced Marich to become golden deer right, to avenge his mother and brother's death
