I think Preeti did some unconventional roles at the beginning of her career toosmiley20, and that was the reason for her breakthrough. (apart from her cure dimples off-coursesmiley36)

She did go in a comfort zone post Kal Ho Na Ho, but as mentioned by RaniPreetiAish.... her non-Bollywood films were unconventional.

In fact, Kareena, Aishwarya, Deepika etc. all of them have tried variety of roles in their careers.... it´s rather the audience that boxed them into certain roles and hence they keep falling back on them because they could not find solo success.

Priyanka and Rani are definitely among the most versatile of the lot.smiley20

I like Sanya Malhotra from the current generation, in that regard. She is willing to different roles and she is quite versatile and talented.smiley32

When you’re Alia: it’s very easy to be unlikeable smiley41

Is she unlikable? I didn't think her character came across this way and I'm someone with very little regard for Alia.

But I didn't see Rani's Maya as unlikeable either. That's actually my favorite of her characters. I think the KANK cast had some of their career bests with that film.

First of all, it's really nice that even mainstream actresses now are getting roles that can be called difficult. It was something of a rarity earlier.

When I think such actresses I think of Vidya, Tabu, Kangana and ofcourse Rani. These names come to my mind immediately. Ofcourse there might be more. Even Priyanka has that capability.

Rani has been hit and miss as far as performances are concerned.

good in Mardani2 but woeful in Bunty Babli 2 and underwhelming in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway.

Tabu

Everyone else is too comfortable to try anything else at best they'll play a rape victim or drug addict and people will be like

I was watching Tapsee Pannu’s interview with Faridoon where she said that we live in an era where even if you give a brilliant performance, it has to be fed into the audience’s mind by that actor’s PR ..According to her , people don’t use their analytical skills to differentiate between the really talented people and the ones who are PR spooned .. So, use your analytical skills please and name the actresses from mainstream cinema who are actually not afraid to take on difficult characters head on and display their versatility..

I agree with Tapsee (and you) about the analytical skills...the problem is that the reception/impression/connection isn't something that really works on an analytical level...that comes later and should - in my eyes - also be grounded on the knowledge about the profession and its demands in craft and talent.

Personally, PR has no impact on my judgement. I wouldn't watch a certain actress (actor) and her (his) movies because of the PR but because of my own impression and interest.

Rani is one of those actresses I really liked to watch in every role I've seen till date. (the same for Tapsee)

Okay, I might be swimming against the popular opinion in the comments, but I think back in the day Aishwarya took on more daring roles than Rani, hands down. Rani stuck to the safe zone until she couldn't anymore. She's been diving into offbeat stuff only after Laga Chunri. Now, onto your question—Alia Bhatt takes the cake. She could play it safe, but she's all about the risks, doing something different, constantly reinventing herself to stay interesting. You could throw Vidya or Kangana into the mix, but let's be real, they didn't/don't have much choice but to go bold.

Alia can't do comedy and her crying scenes are bad. She does repetitive roles.

Why does he not take on roles where he plays the leads dad/older brother? Similar to what Kader Khan was for him in the 90's. That's surely...
