Manu had been "ill" for 25 years...from the moment she decided to bash her homeland although knowing that she had said a lie...that never left her feeling and thinking, she just suppressed it...but the soul would react...it always react...it's the human core.
So, the border wasn't the 'real' issue...that's why the movie is far deeper than it seems...
I think that none of SRK's movies from PBDHH on has only one layer... Zero has five I noticed...

This used to be common back in 90s or 2000s movies like Billu Barbar, we’ve gone backwards in this aspect in last few years I believe. Entire Bajrangi Bhaijaan was on the concept of a nice decent man accepting on-yo-face insults in the most humble and non-violent way possible. Glad to see this back after a long time.
