When do you think a character crosses the line and becomes annoyingly arrogant from charismatic arrogant.

We all the the characters who just are plain arrogant but we still like them. we still like their snarky remarks, their witty insults, their total disregard for other peoples' emotions etc.

Examples for those type of characters:

Dr. House.

Sherlock Holmes (BBC one).

Tony Stark.

Don(SRK one is much more cruel (and sometimes just plain evil) than the original Bachchan one. But many people liked SRK don too.)

I want to write arrogantly charming characters but I want to find out the line they shouldn't cross.

As a writer , I can affirm every character will have both admirers and critics among the audience. If a character is too arrogant, add moments of vulnerability and show empathy to make them more relatable.

Honestly, I don't like arrogant characters (including Sheldon Cooper) much... But I can still entertain them as long as they don't cross limit smiley36... Or their actions are NOT glorified or romanticised...

For example, people finding cornering, harsh manhandling, pulling and all romantic isn't my idea... Like fine, show harshness but make sure you later balance it out showing arrogance being realized and them being softer... Also source of realization should be their own brains and not FL ka free Therapy sessions... smiley39

Oh yeah Sheldon Cooper. I don't like him much.. But he is one of the favorite characters of the show.

@red: Yeah, As a person who is not much into Rom com genre, I can not say I saw many examples of that.. But I really feel that the audience find the manhadling and cornering, 'romantic' when the doer is a rich and handsome Male lead. Handsome being the key ingredient. If a non ML does that, then suddenly people are up with pitchforkssmiley39

@blue: You know what, I was wondering if the FL curing ML is really that good. Now I am thinking of a story arc where the ML is not 'converted' by the FL angelic power. Why label one behavior as good and another as bad. I would be considered as an arrogant girl for some because I voice out my opinions but some other people consider be just sincere. I have been called as a person who cannot love others and be loved by others. While other people just find be so lovable. If can be two people at once, so can ML. Why change ML to the FL's standard of good. shouldn't FL be able to love the good of ML? Yeah... sorry for the rant.smiley44

I understand that every character have fans and haters. But I find that fascinating that a trait like arrogance is shown in more likable characters.

I also feel that when they are arrogant.. they need to deserve that arrogance. All the people whom I mentioned earned their right to be arrogant because they are not just good but probably the best in what they do. They are always good at what they do.

If an incompetent person is arrogant... it would come off as vain.. but if they they cannot be defeated in their field then, the audience feel that they deserve the arrogance

I honestly don't like arrogance. Kindness, and empathy is important for me to like a human being. Cannot stand disrespect. No wonder I will always choose an Abhinav over Abhimanyu birla.

In which universe would arrogance be good? Low self confidence be good... Angelic powers bestowed on FL is more like... Turning guy more confident or less arrogant.. Whatever a guy needs...

Have you seen Tarzan the Wonder Car? Crazy child in me loved that movie... It wasn't a children fantasy movie concept included murders and revenge yaar... But here FL does fall for dork... And changes his look for marketing purposes smiley37 that's not to say that she didn't love dork version but people tend to make other person better.... However, my issues start with mindset of woman being therapy center... It's cringe... Like burning moon... FL is saying she will change ML because he has hidden personality of goodness ... Like is that even your job?

@Red

And when the guy is nice but gareeb who tries to help lonely pregnant woman becomes creepy

@red: But a Rich and handsome ML tries to copy that, people just cant stop bawling their eyes out of the pure selflessness that is being portrayed.smiley8smiley8

How can we blame the creators when the audience are this confusingsmiley36

Chal chodo...

Coming back to the main point, Yes, arrogance is somewhat likable.. otherwise people would not be churning out one arrogant character after another in fiction.

Even in real life, SRK in interviews somewhat plays himself as arrogant, ("Calling himself the last of stars") etc. but there is a balance for that. Even his play arrogance is likable. He found the perfect mixture of arrogance, humility, wit, charm. I also want that mixture for my characters.

Tarzan the wonder car thing!! Oh god? really? It is car murdering people. And he just wore different clothes and lens. BTW who paid for those things? woh toh gareeb that na? Why didn't I think about that?smiley29

Tu bhi na sejal.. now my head is playing that stupid bgm "Mera car.. mera maan.. ttaaazaaann".. i think.. never got the lyrics.. but tune is stuck

Honestly, no matter how deplorable a character is you will always find a section of people who like them. So I think it depends on the taste.

What may be too much for me, might not be for another person. So, it varies really

Personally, my irritation starts when the narrative itself starts to justify the character's actions

For example, Karna in Mahabharat is an "anti-hero". If you ask me he was a villain on par with Dusshan.

He has a "tragic" backstory and hence a large following. That's ok. My problem starts when Karna-obsessed authors start justifying his crimes

There is this one book "Karna's Wife", where the author uses Draupadi to justify our "anti-hero". Draupadi says that it was OK for Karna to demand for her to be stripped naked because she rejected me.

You can write a charmingly arrogant character or make a straight-up villain as your protagonist. Just don't justify their crimes.

They are bad people, so present them as one. Don't try to white-paint them

Like George Martin's ASOIAF, the majority of characters are bad people. But they still make for interesting characters. At no point does the narrative try to justify them
