My first had been Ohm Shanti Oshaana with Nitin (lovely movie!)...others had been e.g. Kumbalangi Nights (intense movie and a first directorial), Virus (gorgeous ensemble casting/play), a film with Mammootty and Mohanlal from the 80ies (don't remember the title but we have already talked about the movie here in the forum) and Kali (with Dulquer and Sai)...

I watched 'C U soon', after all the hype here

The novelty factor is the whole movie is set on a computer screen.

Few yrs ago I watched Padam Onnu Oru Vilapam. I've never heard about it before. That was good

Have you watched Drishyam?

I only saw the Hindi ones as it was easily available

No one in Kerala calls it that. Maybe the same people who christened Hindi film industry as Bollywood?

Caveats and recommendations

Caveats.

1. Mallu movies take their time establishing background. The first 25 to 35% may be spent just getting to know the characters.

2. People look like normal Indian people. You're not likely to find blow-dried hair, full makeup, designer clothes, heavy jewelry.

3. There are mass masala movies here too. Jammy's channel is a good one to follow if you want to know which new ones to watch.

4. Don't anticipate progressive utopia in all movies. Things have changed, but some old ones are hyper cringey.

I like Dulquer...and there are so many movies with M & M (as I call them...my 'uncommon' and rare pleasure)

I started with Malayalam movies but then also enjoyed Tamil and Telugu ones and a random Bengali and Kannada, also Marathi and Punjabi (and lately a Gujarati one)...but absolutely not enough time...there are movies to enjoy for a whole (long) lifetime smiley1

There have always been strong female characters in commercial Malayalam cinema in every decade. I've been watching 70s films and I'm surprised by how of them frankly talk about women's desires and capacity to make decisions. They make mistakes, pay for it and stand up for themselves.

There's Seema telling Mammootty who plays the son of a family friend in the film Nanayam to get up and get out when he crosses the limits. Or Revathy telling Mohanlal in Devasuram that she has an ego too and she must satisfy it even if she must suffer for it. He can't manipulate her like a puppet just because he's a rich egoistic landlord. It taught me that it was ok to stand up for myself when men/elders cross the limits. Anger is not a terrible thing as Sai Pallavi and me learned together in Kali. It empowers you to get out of terrible situations. The films taught me that it was more important to get a job and be independent because who knew what twist fate throws on your way :death, divorce, disease, prison.

She, a Pakistani, has more knowledge about South Indian cinema than most north Indians do about South cinema.
