Reddit Spoiler
If you loved the usual romcoms of Dharma like Humpty Sharma, Badrinath Ki Dulhania etc, you'll love Rocky Aur Rani, which is based on almost the same template when it comes to the cinematography, the sequence of songs, the plot execution and character arcs, the art direction etc. It's basically a more extravagant 2 States with Ranveer in full form. But if you're looking for something different and unique, you won't find it here.
A detailed review
KJo films are always known for being corny or cheesy in execution, yet the vulnerable moments are effective because the execution is so good that despite the huge flaws, you're invested in the characters. However, in this movie, you see less of KJo and more of mostly Shashank Khaitan's writing doing the job. KJo has had different writers work on his film before as well, but this was probably the first time I couldn't see his trademarks anywhere.
On the surface, the film is hardly distinguishable in comparison to other Dharma romcoms like HSKD, BKD, Govinda Naam Mera etc. It's 2 States all over again, except this time it's Punjabi people vs Bengali people. And just like many other Dharma films, the Punjabi people are loud and exaggerated, while an awful job is done to characterize anyone who isn't Punjabi.
Despite the conventional format being followed, what eventually draws you in the film are the characters, who are fleshed out solely because of the actors, rather than the writing. Rocky is simply Ranveer unabashedly being Ranveer. He eats up the screen whenever he's visible and absolutely no one in the cast is able to match up to his screen presence. I wouldn't blame you if you accidentally called the film "Ranveer Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani". Alia as Rani isn't as different as a personality compared to Vaidehi from BKD or Kavya from HSKD, and does a decent job. The only problem I found with her were scenes where she had to show she was Bengali, which even as a non-Bengali felt cringeworthy. Both actors have a great back and forth with each other in comedic or tense scenes, and their chemistry feels great as well, although I personally wish Rani's passiveness is as effective as Rocky's energy, which unfortunately, it isn't.
The veterans in the supporting cast do a good job as well. Jaya Bachchan is the frontrunner here who does the best in the supporting cast as the disapproving mother. Dharmendra is emotionally very effective, and I personally hoped he had more scenes to perform in. Coming to the songs, What Jhumka and Tum Kya Mile remain the most memorable out of the lot, which is disappointing since one of the two is a mediocre remix with a catchy hook from the original classic, and all of this is from an album of a KJo film. But then again, calling this Shashank Khaitan's film would be more appropriate.
Lastly, I'd recommend the film to people who are familiar with Shashank Khaitan's format, which is simple cheesy fun without a lot of depth. It isn't my cup of tea personally, but people who love films like BKD, HSKD, etc will have a blast. If you aren't keen to any of this, stay home or go for Barbenheimer.
