People are also naming those who are considered sexy or hot or 'unconventionally good looking'.

Plus you used the word 'heart throb' in title which has led people to name Vicky, Ranbir, Ranveer and even Ajay.

Considering RS and RK have been 'heartthrobs'.

Anyway, coming to your OP, I would like to respond that earlier people had different standards of beauty. They liked voluptuous women, full figure, big eyes, curvy women, well aligned teeth. Hema Malini is closest to what Indians depict in idols of goddesses or paintings or calendar art. She also dances well and that is a bonus. Her large eyes and long eye lashes, doe eyed beauty, chubby cheeks, curvy body were considered her asset.

She was compared to goddesses and apsaras back then.

And she maintained self rather well with those surgeries or botox and yoga etc which is why she was called timeless beauty and even John Abraham said he had crush on Hema. Her looking younger and well maintained for her age has only added to her timeless beauty myth.

She also knows her appeal which is why she has done a lot of period films, tv shows and costume dramas or played goddess or performs in mould of devi or apsara in classical dance performances also.

People forgive her for her bad voice. She was wildly popular in 70s and giving even heroes a run for their money.

Indians like full figure. Most Indian women are not slim nor tall. There is a reason why even Sonakshi was a hit in massy films despite her weight issues. And some call Deepika 'flat' or say aaj kal ki ladkiyo mein woh baat nahi hai.

Partly Madhuri's appeal also lay in her full figure and heaving her breasts and buttocks in cameras and dancing to suggestive songs while pretending to play sanskari bahu. She appealed to Indian ideal of Sati Savitri outside and hot in front of males or in dreams of males. Cleverly makers would cast her in seemingly pious role but make her do cheap songs in name of a fantasy or 'majboori' of woman forced to dance like Tezaab, Yaarana or Devdas or as some trap for criminals like Khalnayak. She, Rekha, Dimple and Sridevi are also first mainstream heroines to do elaborate love making scenes, kissing scenes, with all those noises, expressions and topless or backless stuff or giving impression of being wrapped in bedsheet or towel. The so called love for looks comes from these antics also.

I like Ash, Madhubala, Sadhana, HR, young Hema and Dharam, Vinod Khanna, Bhanupriya etc but I did not counter it when some members named some of them as overrated.

Sonali bandre -never understood the hype around her looks in her younger days(I have only seen it in this forum)..but I find the current sonali bandre very attractive

Sonakshi sinha - that huge forehead, the nose and the broad shoulders are a big No for me

Kiara advani - I don't find her even pretty from any angle..she has no uniqueness,no aura.. nothing

Shradha - she is pretty for sure,but her looks are very overhyped according to me

Sonam Kapoor - she only looks good in stills that too with proper make up and all..but i find her smile very beautiful

And the most important one..REKHA..can never ever understand the hype around her looks..her face cut , features everything are just basic..but when I watched her interview,i found her intriguing, very eloquent...in that sense she is attractive..but purely based on physical beauty i don't see it

Juhi is most overrated in terms of beauty. She was just cute. Never a beauty

More importantly her fake smile forcefully showing her batteesi. I think Madhuri started this trend of smiling/laughing showing all the batteesi like draculas. 😅

No the batteesi trend and obsession with smile started from Madhubala.

She laughed and smiled way too much and opened her mouth all the time even where it was not necessary.

She knew she did not look that good when her mouth was closed. She had a lopsided nose and 'tedha' mouth. Her face and features are not symmetrical.

It was her laugh and smile which made up for other flaws.

And once she became wildly popular for her smile and laugh or began to be called most beautiful or was compared to Marilyn Monroe who herself used to open mouth too much and laugh and smile all time, people began to think this is most preferred quality in women.

Suchitra Sen was another one who showed teeth a lot while smiling and during songs while lip syncing.

Madhuri modelled herself after Madhubala in terms of hairstyle and laughing, smiling way too much. She is just spicier and hotter version of Madhubala.

Juhi and others copied Madhuri once they saw her succeed like crazy and upstage even Sridevi.

I agree Juhi shows teeth too much. She also took child woman tag or cute tag seriously and kept acting like overgrown child woman even as she got older. She became a caricature and I found her irritating AF in Ishq, Phir bhi Dil hai Hindustani and One 2 Ka 4, Bhootnath etc.

Batteesi trend and obsession with smile has destroyed BW IMO. Sometimes Ash, PC, Deepika etc would also show batteesi or laugh too much just to copy Madhubala, Madhuri, Juhi etc.
