Also, KJo has lost his mojo. His directorial prowess has diminished after MNIK. I don't think his NRI-appealing melodrama will work with the masses.
I guess its a catch-22 for Ranveer. The Rohit Shetty cop universe is a Dharma production - so he has to do the roles Daddy KJo gives. Its a shame because he is talented and could have really been a diverse actor.
I do feel sorry for him because 83 and Jayeshbhai Jordaar which were different roles tanked.

You know, part of the problem is Ranveer and his persona. There is a value to being wacky as a means to get attention. But he's made being zany such a big part of his personality that it overshadows his talent. It makes it easy for people to pigeonhole him. Also, the more you play into your personality, the less people think of your talent.
Lady Gaga/Stefani Germanotta has used wackiness successfully in her career. Stefani is classically trained from Tish, one of the most elite music schools in the nation. But her debut self-titled album tanked. Realizing she needed to stand out she reinvented herself as Lady Gaga - an over-the-top, outrageous pop personality and became a chart-topper. In this era, many people thought she was an untalented hack who was famous only for her outfits.
But Lady Gaga was careful not to let her outfits overshadow her talent. She did the right collaborations and chose the right performances. A Jazz collaboration with Tony Bennet, the national anthem at the Superbowl, and a pulpy campy Ryan Murphy show - she established herself as a talent to reckon with.
Ranveer was very straightforward and down to earth around his debut. And honestly, he didn't need to create a persona because everyone saw him as a talent to reckon with. It did help him rise to mercurial popularity. But after that he hasn't been able make the right choices so that his talent shines brighter than his persona.
I always knew Ranveer's persona was going to blow up on him eventually. It worked for a while, but he's pushing 40 soon and it's been 10 years of the same...celebrities have to constantly evolve and change otherwise they risk becoming pidgeonholed as you said, while the audience gets bored and moves on. Lady Gaga understood this immediately when ArtPop flopped. She took a step back, leaned on her natural talents and slowly regained the public's attention and respect.
Based on how Ranveer used to be around his debut, my strong theory was always that he leaned hard into the OTT wackiness as to not only stand out, but to also protect himself. He used it as a shield to hide his vulnerabilities and his private life. That worked for him for a long time, until it didn't. It's lead to his persona completely overshadowing everything about him, including his talent and work. No one really knows who the real Ranveer is, what he believes in, what his thoughts and opinions are on real subjects. He allowed himself to be the joke and that's what he became. If you don't look like you're taking yourself seriously then no one else will take you seriously. It's a tough place to be. He's having trouble finding good work.
But it appears he may have finally realized all of this. I thought he seemed different at the Tiffany's event in NYC, a calmer vibe. He cut his hair, is less hyper, mellowed clothing, and is making minimal appearances now.
Not sure this movie will be good for him (aside from a possible hit status) if he wants to move away from the persona...because everything about him in this movie just looks exactly like how we've been seeing him off the screen for years.

I do hope the movie succeeds because I miss the larger-than-life Bollywood musical drama.
But I hope Rocky's loud personality doesn't make Ranveer fall back into his wacky persona.
