I firmly believe that people should be able to live authentically, being whomever they want to be. If that means people change their biological sex, then so be it.

It would be a straightforward issue if it were just a matter of adults. Adults have free will and freedom of choice to do whatever they want with their bodies.

But when it comes to children, it becomes a whole lot more complicated. There is a reason there is an age of consent. There is a reason why those under 18 cannot get a tattoo or even get their ears pierced without parental consent. Science has agreed that children do not have the capability to make decisions the way adults do. So I think people on both sides of the debate should agree that the goal is safeguarding children.

Unfortunately, somewhere down the road, both sides lost sight of what is important. It has become an ideological battlefield that lacks empathy and/or reason.

Fact - Gender dysphoria is real. People whose biological sex does not align with their gender identity feel trapped leading to depression and suicidal thoughts. Gender-affirmative surgery is proven to improve mental well-being.

Fact - Gender-affirmative surgery is almost irreversible. Getting it for the wrong reasons can also be traumatic leading to depression and suicidal thoughts. Even though puberty blockers are reversible, they have unknown biological effects and can be disastrous when administered for the wrong reason.

So it is imperative that gender-affirmative treatment be given to

- someone who absolutely and truly is disconnected from the body they are born in

- someone who completely understands the risks of gender-affirmative treatment and is willing to go through the process

@bold — chalo at least you are agreeing that Left has also lost the plot is defending pedos and mutilating minors n kids because it has become an ideological war between LW and RW.

I am a parent and I hate this present scenario where everyone is fighting for their ideology than well being of a future generation.

Everyday there are 10000 medicine ads on TV where adv is for 10 secs and they spend 30 secs showing you side effects. 🤷‍♀️

At any given point I would not believe pharma companies. So this claim about puberty blockers being reversible is dubious and hard to accept coz all the research is funded by lobbies and who knows what goes on.

My trust level in academia and media is all time low. They will even bait kids to make some money.

RWers are stupid and rigid but it’s becoming more dangerous that Brain dead liberals can’t even see logic and rationale anymore.

I think the left has lost the plot for engaging in meaningful discussion. But I wouldn't take it as far as that. Accusing people of pedophilia and harming minors is quite inflammatory and often a result of right-wing echo chambers that want to discredit left without evidence.

@bold is the aspect where I believe the left has lost the ploMost parents want their children to be safe, thrive, and succeed. Most parents are bound to react more strongly than the average person. But when parents react, the left often dismisses it as transphobic and homophobic.

Not that parents aren't transphobic or homophobic. There are indeed bad ones. But when there is so much misinformation, there needs to be additional space and leeway for parental concerns.

Puberty blockers work like birth control (oversimplification).

When you take birth control, pregnancy is averted by either preventing ovulation or creating conditions that prevent fertilization. As soon as you stop taking birth control your uterus resumes 100% normal functionality.

When you take puberty blockers it prevents changes that happen during puberty like voice breaking, development of boobs, genital hair and development, etc. As soon as you stop it puberty continues like normal.

One of the known side effects is low bone density which is addressed through supplements. Other than that they are relatively safe. However, since puberty blockers are new, most of the first recipients have not gone through middle or old age. We do not know how they impact the "whole life." One suspected risk is infertility. Since there are unknown the NHS decided to limit puberty blockers to research settings only.

I understand the mistrust of pharmaceuticals because they are profit driven. But if you mistrust even academics and the media, where/how will you get your information from? Would you rather trust politicians and influences who have zero knowledge or expertise on a subject?

There is not much money to be made in academia. Many researchers are postdocs who get paid a fraction of what the industry does and will lose their jobs when the grant money runs out or a project is shut down for a variety of academic politics.

The average human life expectancy has gone up from 48 in 1950 to 74 in recent times. And that is the average. People in developed nations are living well into 80s and 90s, something unheard of a few decades ago. It's all due to modern science.

In the states, a lot of data is available through the NIH. You can access it yourself and draw your own conclusions. I personally trust research and health information put forth by Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, John Hopkins, and my alma mater UW–Madison.
