Oh okay. But I don't know if that is the cause of this sudden rat race among PC, Alia and DP. Must be one of these that started it I think. What Ash did was way back it seems. But still she would be the first then.

Yes Ash is first in terms of endorsing global brands. Though in terms of TIME cover, Parveen Babi was first to make it there. And in terms of some foreign mag coverage, it was Madhubala who made it to LIFE magazine and was called Marilyn Monroe of the east then.

Sonam, Katrina, Sushmita, Preity, Kareena, Hrithik, SRK, Amitabh, Anil, Freida Pinto etc have all endorsed global brands like Tag Heur, LoReal, Citizen, Rado, Morelatto, Reid & Taylor, Compaq, Microsoft, Mont Blanc etc.

Indian celebs in race to endorse global brands or make it to global magazines or power lists or talk shows or BBC, CNN blah blah is not new. It has been there for a long time now. Started a bit in 60s and 70s. Peaked from 90s and 2000s.

Ash was wildly popular as a model and ambassador. She is the first one to have endorsed both Coke and Pepsi. She was there in every ad in 90s be it Garden sarees or Fair and Lovely or Lakme, Nakshatra jewellery. Later she was most searched person online in 2001 and was endorsing everything from Longines, LoReal to Coke, attended Cannes and there was no looking back when she was voted most beautiful woman in the world by Hello magazine abroad and also won most beautiful Miss World of all times at Miss World pageant again. The Oprah show, David Letterman show, Martha Stewart show, making it to TIME 100 and being first Indian celeb to make it there etc just opened floodgates for Indian celebs. She is original trendsetter for these brands and titles or media appearances.

Just that there was no social media back then which has just multiplied the visibility of these things now. Otherwise she would've been an even bigger star. Wow.

She was insanely popular online then and anyone who has used internet or initial forums or social media networks like Orkut, Bebo, My Space, Livejournal, Yahoo groups, Google groups or forums and blogs like Indiatimes, Rediff etc knows and remembers how insanely popular Ash was in 2000s. And among males it was Hrithik and SRK who were most searched/googled.

Indians were new to internet then and would maul all polls or add names of Indian stars in nominees. Indians still do the same.

Indians mauled BBC poll on greatest actor of the millennium in 1999 and made sure Amitabh came on top. And even Govinda made it to top 10 in that poll.

Madhuri, Amitabh, Salman were other popular ones then. Salman has made it to People's global edition's most handsome men in the world list twice before social media apps or mobile internet penetrated Indian markets.

Indians also murder TIME polls and ensure any Indian nominated there, wins be it SRK, Aamir, Ash, Deepika, Alia etc.

Rajinikanth has also made it to CNN list of Asia's biggest stars of all time in 2000s.

I am sure they'd have won even more polls and got more attention today given the rise of mobile net in India and social media easier to access on all apps on mobile itself.

Sunny Leone was another one who was most searched woman for a long time online and so was Katrina Kaif. Kat was insanely popular as well and no wonder Nakshatra, LoReal, Lux etc took her in late 2000s.

Indians had treated Oscar nom of Lagaan as personal pride issue. I remember many probably saw Oscar for first time in life only to see whether Lagaan won or not. Star Movies TRP shot through the roof then.

Devdas at Cannes, ARR nominated for Oscar was also seen as personal pride issue for Indians voting madly for them in all hot lists, polls, greatest/best lists.

They get high traffic stars, knowing things are gonna sell out. When they announced Xiao Zhan for Gucci, his fans bought out one of the Gucci stores in China. His power to move goods in China seems unparalleled. Similarly with S Korean fans, they buy out stuff their faves endorse. So that profit is promised for brands as soon as they sign the celeb, coz the fan culture in those countries is like that.

There is fat chance of that ever happening in India. Maine toh kabhi ek chocolate bhi nahi liya, just coz my fave was endorsing it, forget a bag worth lakhs.

So m assuming Indian celebs would come at 30% of the price? Coz they dont guarantee sales, just visibility? I dunno abt Korea but China has a code kinda thing which fans can use to prove that they purchased it just coz their fave is endorsing it. Which directly reflects how much that celeb earned for the brand. Basis that they renew contracts in China I am the told.

@Mallika: any idea?

I feel like DietSabya would know. Clearly an industry insider and in fact broke the news of PC being ambassador to Valentino well before it was official. Happy to see the girls killing it, aur yeh toh bas shuruat hai. :)

Yeah I remember she was very popular, has always been. Don't know about those polls, I wasn't very interested in BW then or this type of news. Great information though 👍🏼
